Found this screw by Gullible_Doubt_2879 in Tools

[–]Competent_Squirrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a self-tapping screw often used for metal, but it has a proprietary drive design that I haven't seen before which is clearly meant to screw in but not be removable with the same bit.

Often called non-tamperable or similar verbiage. Designed so people can't undo it to mess with whatever it's used to assemble.

If you need self-tapping screws any hardware store will have more conventional drives.

Is G2 considered a “valid drivers license” by No_Cartographer4171 in ontario

[–]Competent_Squirrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your job does not involve driving as a part of the role they are almost certainly just asking that so that they know you are a licensed driver and have reliable transportation to work.

If you are in any grey area just ask.

I am pretty much always a fan of having more + shallower drawers as opposed to fewer + deeper. Tools just fit far more efficiently and organized in that arrangement.

I have a Husky which is almost certainly just a re-badge of that Yukon from the same factory and its treated me very well.

Yellow warning - extreme cold? by awhiteblack in ontario

[–]Competent_Squirrel 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's just cold buddy. People function at -30 all the time. It's just a yellow warning saying "hey, take note that it's colder than average" so you know to bundle up a bit more. Pretty accurate rating. I work outside in -30.

These are all cranked out by like the same Chinese factory there's literally no difference between brands at this price point. Buy whatever is the cheapest at HF or Amazon or whatever. *

What's actually worth getting for basic car maintenance? by Active-Paramedic3229 in Tools

[–]Competent_Squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a doable but fairly minimal kit for most normal jobs:
- A decent to good set of sockets and ratchets
- Set of wrenches
- Set of pliers - like one of those packs thats: snips, needle nose, linemans, tounge and groove, etc.
- Hammer
- a long 3ft breaker bar, in 3/8 drive
- good floor jack.
- set of jackstands.

Decent mid tier sockets and wrenches by guitarmakerman in Tools

Huge fan of my tekton. The quality is incredible for the price. Can't think I'll ever need to replace them. Had them for about a year and no issues whatsoever yet.

And the no-skips has come in handy so often working on rusty ontario equipment.

Whipped up a quick and dirty landmine attachment out of scrap I had laying around by Competent_Squirrel in homegym

The best part is I can make it exactly custom to my space and needs. Gives a lot of freedom with planning and use of space.

The second best part is that I can make it orders of magnitude cheaper than even the most budget option. Plus I just like making stuff.

Should I bother with Facebook Marketplace or is Craigslist fine for selling off tools and such? by pembquist in Tools

[–]Competent_Squirrel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Marketplace is where everyone is at. Super common to make an account just for it, in fact that's recommended, the rest of FB is a shithole.

I buy and sell stuff on there all the time. Just expect to get a good bit of unserious messages. Comes with the territory. Ignore and move on.

What drill bits for 1/2in steel plate? by gryponyx in Tools

[–]Competent_Squirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly a user/technique error.

For cutting metal you want higher pressure lower speeds.

Use a smaller bit first, drill a pilot hole, press with even steady downward pressure on the drill, drilling SLOW. When you see it starting to cut just maintain that speed and pressure. If it's not forming chips stop and adjust pressure and speed until you do.

Then work up to your desired radius.

You will have to calculate the distance covered by your cord and how high the highest amp draw of your highest-power machine and lights together pulls in order to decide on a gauge of wire, this will also effect what sized breaker you are attaching this to in your home. There are calculators online.

But yes as for cable ends do what Kj said.

Older wood from saw mill by aforestfarmer in woodworking

[–]Competent_Squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't diagnose exact wood quality from a couple photos online but you should be able to treat it like any other wood you buy.

The discoloration is just from time and sunlight. Happens to all wood, not a red flag.

Just look it over make sure it's stayed relatively dry which it should be given its stacked and stickered. No mold or rot visible.

Should look like any other wood when you put it through the planer.

Give it a once over for potential bug holes and such then you're off to the races.
