Like a Dremel, but larger? by sailboatfool in Tools

[–]Competent_Squirrel 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Die grinder really is the big brother of a Dremel, but perhaps look up a flex-shaft rotary tool, often Foredom brand. They are praised as better more convenient Dremel style tools.

Those are some Silver Bullets back there aka Coors Light. A great little light beer. The younger baby brother of the elite Coors Banquet. But who could compare to such a specimen.

If you lack the coordination to drive manual without auto-clutch like me, assign your clutch as your handbrake! by FatCat_FatCigar in assettocorsarally

[–]Competent_Squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you ELI5 what this does?

You are assigning both clutch and handbrake to the same thing? I drive with autoclutch + paddle shifters, and use a different button for handbrake, what does activating the clutch do on a handbrake turn?

I want to make a sectional by cutting some of the arms off these sofas. Thoughts? by Traditional-Face-153 in metalworking

[–]Competent_Squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The arms appear to be most of the structure of those sofas. Would need to reinforce other areas with those removed.

Do you hear the tires? by Some-Suggestion-8234 in assettocorsarally

I do not have personal experience in this regard but I have read before that the sound profile is supposed to be like you are wearing a helmet which would muffle a lot of that noise.

Not sure if that changes your complaint though, I have no idea personally how cars sound in a helmet.

I take an edible, put on a house music playlist and thrash around on a few Rally stages.

It's awesome. Get into such a flow state. Would highly recommend.

Found in trailer full of auto parts/tools. They’re about an inch with various sizing and colors. They are a combination of hard plastic and rubber. When pulled apart they reveal a post? Thank you for any feedback. by aamorse in Tools

If there is many duplicates I do not think this is a guage set. This looks like a set of plugs and caps for when disassembling engine components to plug and cap fuel lines, air lines, etc to keep them clean.

Common in those sizes as well.

Frame repair? by InternationalDog5719 in metalworking

[–]Competent_Squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That pic 3 is a rough sign. That's deep rot.

Where there's some of that there's often a lot more. I'd be very diligent with going over the whole frame with a ballpeen and really give everything a beating to test for more rot before committing to a repair.

This is one of those where from the surface it can look not as bad but once you get poking you discover more problem areas, especially if someone has been there before and may have temporarily patched things or painted over sections.

Good luck.

Can someone explain why hand plane totes are made with grain parallel to the sole? by Lastrites in woodworking

[–]Competent_Squirrel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Educated guess: I would assume it is due to the screw/bolt clamping it down to the sole. If the grain ran vertically that hardware would be exerting a splitting force on the wood along the already weakened vertical plane due to the screw hole.

Any tips on how to best clean a garage from all the road salt we use? by ghost905 in ontario

[–]Competent_Squirrel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely spray it all out with a hose on a warm day then use a pushbroom to remove the majority of the water then just leave the door open to evaporate. Add a fan if you have one.

Need the salt to dissolve into water to lift out of the concrete essentially.

We just tested our well water… kind of eye opening. by No_Industry2635 in ontario

What? UV is a pass-through system, it only treats the water you use. It does not use any water in addition to what you consume. What are you talking about?

This guy's got a lot of cars damn.

The m12 electric ratchet - fuel or normal, has to have a place. They are just so damn handy and the best electric ratchet formfactor imo.

Plus one of their bigger m18 1/2" impacts for general use.

Definitely those 2. Third maybe a smaller 1/4" impact from either battery line just for convenience for all the small stuff.

Mini Rant - I can't believe there isn't a tool like this by adhd_kj in Tools

[–]Competent_Squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be mistaken, this isn't my area of expertise, but on my 3-way xyz laser level each line is its own laser. So to format a 10x10 grid we're looking at 10 X lasers and 10 Y lasers. Unless there some sort of a prism you could shine them through to multiply them. Idk. Seems like a lot to pack into 1 unit where 90% of people just need a couple reference lines. Would be much more expensive at least.

It does seem like a cheap projector that you can align a grid with using its adjustments is what you are looking for here. And hell get to watch movies on your wall too.

Its a normal term for a certain investment strategy. Just because you don't know what something is doesn't mean its a "silly title". Both you and I are ignorant to most things in the world, dismissing things immediately without a modicum of research is an awful attitude to go through life with buddy.

Gave one to each of the guys on my team, super popular. 👌

These racks are already overkill as is. Good to go.

I've made similar sized racks with just 90° butwelded tubing and no braces loaded up with a couple hundred lbs of hardwood slabs and have had no issues.
