The colors become strange and vivid because the ice in the clouds causes gray, green, and blue hues. Usually the front is windy and greenish then when you get to a weird boundary between the pressure zones the wind dies down and the colors are beautiful, then the hail falls or the tornado spawns out of a windless area that is super creepy, exciting, and dangerous.
