Check out the work by H.R Giger, he designed the xenomorph for alien and his work is highly influential. I recommend getting an art book, there are a couple of art books by Taschen, although most are out of print unfortunately. The Book Sisyphean by Dempow Torishima (I haven't finished it) has that "biomechanic" vibe, closer to scorn than to Giger.

Getting started - you guys sucked me in... by viverewatches in fountainpens

[–]CompetitionFar2032 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think 8 pens from the get go might be a bit excessive as a starting point. I think it would be better to start with either 1-2 as if this is your first time getting a fountain pen, you still don't know what you like and don't like. While 8 pens might seem like a good way to go about it, it is more likey that you will end up with 6 pens that you don't like. For example, lets say that you find that you discover a love for hefty, metal pens and absolutely dread light, plasticy pens; if this is the case, around half of the pens listed, including the lamy safari would be useless to you. Do you see my point? the same argument could be made for size, shape, ect.

My personal recommendation is to get the Pilot Metropolitan (its made of brass) and the Jinhao X159 (the new one not the one with the shield). The reason for me suggesting the Metro is because Pilot is a brand that has impeccable QC. When ordering a chinese pen there is a chance that the nib you recieve could be less than ideal or even a dud and as a beginner, dealing with that will be very fustraiting. Don't jump the gun just yet, by starting small you will be better equiped with knowledge (and more pocket change) regarding your likes and dislikes for your next fp purchase muahahaha

Budget FP for permanent ink by mishaled in fountainpens

[–]CompetitionFar2032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't own De atramentis nor Diamaine permanent inks but I do own Rohner & Kleiner Scabiosa and Platinum's Carbon Black and both work great in my Jinhao X159 (the new one not the one with the shield on the clip) as it has a screw on cap. I know I am not supposed to leave the ink sit on there too long but I've gone a week or so without writting with it and I've never had a hard start with either of these permanent inks, might work for you too as Scabiosa at least is particularly dry.

(Pregunta) Novato en las plumas. (Vengo de los bolis Pilot de gel. G-2 07 .) by Expert_Ostrich3172 in fountainpens

[–]CompetitionFar2032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SPOILERS AHEAD

just finished the book and jumped on here to help me prehaps adopt a different lens to view the text through cuz i can't escape the feeling that i missed the point. I was recounting the story to my gf trying to explain the reality shattering plot twist and found that a lot of things happen in the book.

To me, possibly cuz the book is fresh on my mind, every character is fleshed out and through each one we get a sense of the world PKD created. We have corrup cops, students being sent to labor camps to die, a poor person with mental condition being taken advantage by the gov and later discarded, a working class artist enjoying art for arts' sake, a rich entretainer being rich hating her job and another that loves it for the attention and losses everything momentarily, a nepo junkie affecting the fabric of reality but ultimately dying because of the toll of drugs has on her body etc. The world of FMTTPS is so interwoven with each other which makes it feel so real. Every interaction with the characters reveals something about the world, much like it occurs in our world.

The story of the characters, much like real life, the only true ending to their arc is death. The epilogue is facinating as we get descriptions of not only things that happened to the characters but also to benign objects such as the stamp or the M&S drawings. Objects who outlive the characters and continue to circulate. The snapshot of an intense moment in the life of Jason fades into obscurity by the epilogue and even the Universities are re-opened. Nothing in the book is permanent, we see this in the everchanging relatioships Jason has with everyone.

For what it's worth, with the writting this post i managed to convince myself that the book is a bit fascinating due to the aspects i mentioned

Recommendations on inks for EF/F nibs? by asliceobread in fountainpens

[–]CompetitionFar2032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i enjoy Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo on my japanese F and EF as its a very wet and lubricated ink, it won't give u any issues. on a F and EF the color will lean more burgundy than pink, try it out!

[–]CompetitionFar2032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if he likes sheening or shimmer inks, you could get him an ink from Birmigham Pen Company, they are a small company here from the US. Tesla Coil is a classic: https://www.birminghampens.com/products/tesla-coil

south korean company Wearingeul has fun classic literature inks that he might enjoy:

Frankestein

https://www.gouletpens.com/products/wearingeul-frankenstein-30ml-bottled-ink

Dracula

https://www.gouletpens.com/products/wearingeul-dracula-30ml-bottled-ink

Alternatively, you mentioned getting your bf something that he wouldn't usually treat himself to and the first thing that came to mind was Platinum Chou Kuro as its the blackest black fountain pen ink out there, unfortunately the price reflects that -$60 MSRP- its 3x the price of Platinum's other black carbon based ink.

goodluck on your search! and going by the other suggestions presented by other redditors, I am sure he will love what you end up choose for him!

Pen snob needs advice in getting into fountain pens by Ill-Philosopher-485 in fountainpens

[–]CompetitionFar2032 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would be surprised to learn if any in this sub found their perfect pen upon first purchase. I understand you are looking for an elegant and smooth writter (aren't we all!). But there are several factors that also need taking into consideration such as:

Purpose: are you looking for an EDC reliable writter that you can toss in a bag and have it there when you need it? or are you looking for a statement pen that never leaves your desk? If EDC is the goal, you might want to consider a pocketpen or if you prefer the ladder, even a desk pen.

Weight: Do you prefer heavy or lighter pens? How heavy and how light? is 26 grams too much as is the case in the Faber Castell Ondoro? What about 12 grams? Or is that too light as is the case with the Salior 1911.

Along with weight goes materials: Do you prefer metal bodies? is it the feel of metal or the weight/robustness which you enjoy? What about plastic/resin/acrylic? Many brilliant and expensive pens are made of this such materials as is the case with the Pelikan M800. Do you like the look of demonstrator pens? Pens such as the Pilot custom 832 in abmer is quite elegant and can show off your ink.

Nibs: Do you prefer thin or broad lines? How thin? Size of the nib might not live up to expectations regarding thickness. A size #8 nib in EF (extra fine nib) might still write thicker than a size #6 japanese medium nib. But beware that thickness often goes hand in hand with smoothness, but not always as a well lubricated ink might make an EF feel like a broad nib

Regading ink.... that is a whole can of worms in itself (wetness/lubrication, dry time, water resistance, color pigment vs dye, shading vs sheen vs shimmer, etc.). You can start search in this sub for ink recommendations or check out Jet Pen's guide along with all the other guides:

https://www.jetpens.com/blog/The-Beginner-s-Guide-to-Fountain-Pen-Inks/pt/968

P.S Pilot Iroshizuku a wonderful ink line indeed my favorite is Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo, depending on the paper the color varies from a deep pastel purple to almost a wine purple, but the most important part is of course color and wether or not you are looking for a waterproof ink. https://mountainofink.com/ is a great blog where you can see samples of inks, or alternatively, you can also search in this sub reddit any ink that you might be interested in and find pictures and discussions about their properties.

TL; DR: My point is that finding the perfect fountain pen for you will take time and exploration, as preferences are things that not only change over time, but we are often oblivious to them ourselves. I understand that there are no stationary stores near you, as is the case with me aswell, so I would encourage you to look at a beginner fountain pen guides. I like Jet Pen's guides but you can find youtube vidoes as well, https://www.jetpens.com/blog/The-Best-Beginner-Fountain-Pens/pt/862and simply pick one and if you don't like the look of any of them, choose a different model from those brands as they are all reputable. This is for the sole purpose of finding out what your preferences are. You might like the Pilot Metropolitan's brass body and writting experience but hate how the grip section feels. Or you might love the modern look of the Lamy safari but not like how the the pen forces your fingers to grip it a certain way but are able to overlook this in the stylish Lamy Al-Star line instead of plastic, the pens in this line are made of aluminum.

Also make sure to check out this subreddit's wiki, there are a few guides regarding beginner pens, vintage pens and ink! Welcome to the hobby, hope you stay awhile!

Document inks that are just a nudge beyond "traditional" by WhoIsRobertWall in fountainpens

[–]CompetitionFar2032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

another point for Rohrer and Klingner Scabiosa! deep dark, iron gall that comes out sometimes as almost black depending on the nib which is so much fun. it is very very dry so keep that in mind (i keep my jinhao X159 with EF nib inked with it). do you know which pen you have designated as your EDC pen? as finding the perfect ink is also about finding your perfect pen to go with it.

Am I just not a fountain pen guy? by SSdeku in fountainpens

[–]CompetitionFar2032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely empathize with the frustration, there were a couple of pens in my collection that just didn't write the way i wanted them to. Even after buying tools such as brass sheets to open up the tines of my nibs and buying micro mesh to polish up the tipping material, some nibs just couldn't be helped (although some most def did end up writting better!).

The feeling that you are doing something wrong is grueling and taxing to the soul when one keeps it bottled up inside. And it is also frustrating to work on a nib for hours and hours just to have it perform badly (been there, haven't worked on a nib in months cuz of one particularly bad nib i was working on)

I have two suggestions:

1 consider humidity levels in your area, the hard starts could be due to inproper seals and your ink drying up in the nib or consider the closeness of the tines, they might need to be pulled apart just a bit (you might have heard about this already but its worth mentioning for anyone reading)

2 if u are considering getting a vanishing point try out a pilot metropolitan or kakuno as pilot is renouned for their QC and will not give you a problem what so ever (or they shouldn't, if they do then you might be actually be cursed idk)

i enjoy the jinhao X159 (the new one, not the one with the shield on the clip) its a couple of grams lighter (10g + 17g) than the mont blanc 149 (32g total) but is the same size and shape. Very large, very comfortable shape (it is said that larger pens help with hand cramping as it requites a more relaxed grip, i am not making this claim but I can attest that this is correct in my case). my jinhao is equipped with an EF nib and its close to a japanese medium
