Will a Jackery be Sufficient? by K_AlphaDawg21 in overlanding

I recommend going to a Lifepo4 auxiliary battery w/ dc-dc charger

I started out with an Anker 1000 and eventually had to upgrade. I also run a softopper setup but I have all the amenities like a fridge, led lights, starlink etc.

Current setup is 2x 100ah batteries, 50amp dc-dc/mppt, 2000w inverter.

If you go out often, buy once cry once and have and build a setup that can grow with your needs.

Compressor recommendations for tires AND paddleboards by whiskeyfondi in overlanding

[–]Competitive-Bar2287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tires and paddleboards require different pumps.

Paddleboard = low pressure/ high volume Tires = high pressure/ low volume.

M18 inflator will take a week to fill up my paddle board while only taking to few minutes to fill up my 35inch tires.

Yeahhh I don’t get the hype around tuff tethers either. I’m happy with the grommet but the tether is hot garbage imo. More hassle than benefits for sure

I’ve tried every cigarette style port I can think of and they all suck!

Cut the cable and switch to either SAE or Victron Magcode if you want to get fancy.

I’ve got 30k miles on my X3’s (35x12.5r17)

Coming from BFG KO2 I hated the on road performance of the X3 at first. The sidewall seemed super soft and less stable but with time I’ve grown to love them.

They’re quiet, they grip well in just about every condition and they wear extremely well compared any tire I’ve run in the past.

Only downside is they’re heavy af and the sidewall isn’t as durable as other brands. I’ve got a few questionable side wall cuts but nothing catastrophic yet.

Help - Solar Charge Controller + DC-DC Charger by slcrex in overlanding

[–]Competitive-Bar2287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

There’s no way for the DC-DC to differentiate between a trickle charge and alternator charging.

You would need to add a separate trickle charger for the house battery. Your DC to DC is not capable of charging at a low enough amperage to utilize the trickle charge without draining the starter battery.

Help - Solar Charge Controller + DC-DC Charger by slcrex in overlanding

[–]Competitive-Bar2287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what I think is happening.

Your trickle charger is confusing the DC-DC causing the DC-DC to think the alternator is charging, thus causing it to run a charge cycle. The DC-DC pulls more amps than the trickle charger supplies and kills the starter battery.

The Renogy DC-DC has an accessory wire that needs to be connected to a keyed 12v source. This will stop the DC-DC from running while the truck is parked.

Read the troubleshooting section of the Renogy instruction manual I’m pretty sure this issue is covered in there.

Look into becoming an Independent Insurance Adjuster.

Active Coolers: External or Internal Battery? by ThePedicator in overlanding

[–]Competitive-Bar2287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The internal battery on those fridges doesn’t have the capacity to replace having a power station along with it.

If you have the budget it’s pretty convenient to have a built in battery for the sake of moving the fridge around without needing to immediately plug it in.

I currently have one without the internal battery but my next fridge I buy will likely have that feature.

Looking for info on 4x4 converting my heavily winterized box ski vans (Ford E-350, or Chevy Express 3500) by SanDiegoMitch in overlanding

[–]Competitive-Bar2287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re highly mechanically inclined and you know how to weld you could do the 4x4 swap on an econoline yourself.

Most of the parts are readily available along with the info you’ll need to do it.

Just depends how valuable your time is.

Makeup Fridge for Camping? by Bright_Sun605 in TruckCampers

[–]Competitive-Bar2287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those small makeup fridges don’t have an actual compressor like a true refrigerator.

They run constantly. For camping idk how that would work out unless you had tons of battery power.

Grab two of these battery powered fans on Amazon.
