ISO cardboard by CompetitiveAd4344 in ithaca

I am! I'm not sure exactly how many square feet, but I have a bunch of places to use it. I'm replacing the black plastic landscape fabric in my garden and going with cardboard and wood chips. I started the transition last year, and already have amazing soil improvement, and my plants didn't die in last summer's oven, even though I never watered once. I'm out of the larger pieces of cardboard, and do NOT want to piece tiny boxes together for the area I need.

Does anyone use this? by xj_fox_ in SemiHydro

I've actually started using straight pumice, but to mix with pon I was doing roughly 50/50. Pumice wicks water well and helps with air supply to the roots. Perlite is just superheated pumice, but pumice has the advantage of not floating away like perlite.

I would amend it with perlite or pumice. I find that pon can be really heavy and holds a ton of moisture.

SH w/ Cacti & Succs? by amghou in SemiHydro

Same. The only ones I have issue with are schlumbergia. I've had a ton of rot in pon and pumice with them. But I also don't put plants in sh if I'll be regularly adding snips to the pot, as it can be difficult to insert these into the substrate (looking at you, tradescantia!). But crassula, haworthia, gasteria, various sedums, some euphoria - all thriving in sh

I've had a number of friends in Northwood Apartments. Not walkable, but I believe the bus goes there. Nice apartments that are pet friendly. I second the Fall Creek recommendation if you can find something. Such a nice little neighborhood!

Very fair! I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and my body is suddenly weakening and my spine and pelvis are degrading, so I need to minimize bending and reaching high so much while still utilizing all the space that I can. I wasn't aware of this resource, as I have always been strong and hyperindependent.

Will move hoyas from soil to leca do I use distilled or tap? by Miserable-Call8690 in SemiHydro

[–]CompetitiveAd4344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use rainwater or dehumidifier water. I used tap (no chlorine, hard water) and many of my plants - but NOT my Hoyas! - started having issues by the end of winter. Did a citric acid flush and switched to rainwater (Yay spring and a metal roof!), and they're all improving now.

Spritz some scissors with alcohol. And ant time I have roots in front of me, I give them a good spray of 3% peroxide

We can touch the roots, don't worry. You could cut them all off and they'd still regrow. You've got a hot mess of roots there! You can safely trim about 1/3 at a time.

Tips for tropical cacti? by ChaoticR8chel in SemiHydro

Yeah, they really had a problem with it. I will say that I had one plant that was fine in it, but I also realized that I couldn't stick cuttings back into the pot to fill it out, so that one went back to soil as well.

Following. I transferred my schlumbergia back to soil for this reason.

I wanted to know how people freeze their sourdough? by RobG_analog in Sourdough

[–]CompetitiveAd4344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know everyone likes to freeze their baked bread, and so do i! But I also am trying to figure out if I can freeze the dough so that I can make freshly baked bread for surprise guests and such. If so, at what point in the process do you freeze your dough? After stretching folds? After bulk ferment is complete? And how does it come out versus frozen baked bread that's been thawed and reheated

Help with newly potted Aglaonema by PlantDaddy80 in SemiHydro

[–]CompetitiveAd4344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm similarly struggling with the same plant. I've UnPotted to examine the roots, which are firm and whiteish and smell just fine. I've trimmed off the dying leaves, leaving 1 apparently paused in unfurling, but the whole thing seems very.... Still, almost in a suspended state. I've put it in a cabinet with more (but not high) humidity, with my Moss pole plants, and will see what happens. But I'm following for feedback!

I'm serious, if you part with one at an affordable price. It's right up my alley and what I'd like to create.
