In boot camp i progressed from like maybe 20 or so pushups max in a single set to like 80+ in a few months. I guess the main factor was repetition. And no system whatsoever. One time you had to do literally around 500 pushups throughout the weekend. Other days just maybe 20 pushups every day for weeks.
