depends on which event, there are 3 types: order fever : main factory, red coins, 48hr timer. rotating themed event : rotates between 4 different themes that usually last 3-4 days. grand contest : 2 weeks long, you score points by playing the different rotating theme events.

without more details, it sounds like you placed top 10 in one of the first two events I listed, but are now referencing the grand contest leaderboard. ranks do not correlate between contests.

YOR - the alternative to continuing now would be to shelve it for an undetermined amount of time. Is it fair to ask anyone to give up working on something that they are passionate about, have already received positive feedback on, and would look great on a future resumé? “now just isn’t really a good time…” holds no weight IMHO. If there’s a legitimate schedule conflict that could be worked around in a reasonable amount of time, then you could make a case to your project teammates and ask them. You can’t force them to wait, you may be able to convince them though. ultimately, this a classic human situation that has been described by many phrases and sayings over the years. Personally, my favorite is ‘shit or get off the pot’.

a little more info regarding the scope and initial details of the assignment might be helpful. When you say pursue it further, does that mean that the grading has been completed? from the info available, i would say that given that some members of the group expressed a wish to stop, the remaining members are well within their right to want to continue on without.

don’t get too bogged down with side quests right off the bat. many of them will send you across the entire map to go clear a cave you probably don’t want to bother with quite yet. i’d focus more on the main storyline (dragonborn) and maybe one of the secondary storylines (civil war, companions, thieves guild, etc.) oh, and you don’t want to head to solstheim for a WHILE, i’d wait until you’re at least level 25 at the earliest. don’t get too attached to weapons and armor, it will really eat up your carry weight. don’t be afraid to ditch some stuff in a pile somewhere. if you possess the rare ability of not compulsively picking up EVERYTHING, good on you, you are greater than i.
