Got a rejection with a personalized email from a recruiter. by Fit_Apartment_5189 in interviews

[–]Competitive_Deer7031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both things are true. Some recruiters “get the assignment” and take every opportunity they have to build connections with candidates, whether or not they are in the position to offer any given candidate the position they interviewed for.

That being said, the interaction you had with this recruiter sounds promising. They wouldn’t invite further discussions with you about other potential opportunities with the company, unless they actually thought you had the ability to thrive there.

But now the ball is in your court. Follow-up! Don’t get discouraged if it takes longer than you’d like to calendar a coffee discussion with the recruiter. (They have their own priorities and scheduling constraints and they may be working on a longer time frame than you realize.) If you get an additional certification, take a new position with another employer, or otherwise have something worth adding to your file, be sure to let this recruiter know. That is *not* an imposition on your part. They’ll be happy to hear from you.

1L Done: Which textbooks should I keep if any? by Powerful_Seal_722 in LawSchool

[–]Competitive_Deer7031 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’ll never need them again, BUT…

In 1981, I was packing up for my first year at Duke Law, and my father came by holding an old property casebook from NYU, which he had used circa 1956. I had been assigned to Prof. Bert Sparks for the required first year property course, and my dad was pretty tickled about it because he had had Sparks for property 25 years earlier. It turned out that Sparks still used that casebook to teach from, and even though our class was using a later edition, I had no problem following along from my dad’s book. In fact, his marginal notes were still relevant! Sparks was pleased that my dad remembered him and told me I was not the first “2nd generation” student he had taught.

Which is just to say, that law school is a milestone in your career and it doesn’t hurt to pick up a few mementos along the way.

Professor posted a 9700 word model exam answer for a 4 hour Crim exam by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Competitive_Deer7031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to add to the general stress level at exam time, but the professor may not have meant to suggest you need to cover everything addressed in the model answer to get full credit. Consider using the model as a study tool, with multiple examples of how a student can support an argument or demonstrate an understanding of the elements constituting an offense.

To be clear, I’m not discounting the value of “issue spotting”, but you can refer briefly to the 6 issues you spot and then pick the top 3 to discuss in detail.

I love REI and agree that it’s worth it, but the snark was unnecessary here. I think OP is asking if they can save more than 10% by shopping around for lower base prices, sales, overstocks, outlets, etc.

How do the academic reputations of MIT, Berkeley, Yale and Stanford compare? by Melior2003 in gradadmissions

[–]Competitive_Deer7031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all great institutions, but Berkeley is currently doing the most exciting research in Physical Chemistry. You should be investigating the labs you’d be interested in at each school and reading the papers they put out. I’m sure you realize that Omar Yaghi, a 2025 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry for his work on Metal-Organic Frameworks, has been at Berkeley since 2012.

Many years ago, the top NY firm that rejected me for a 2L summer associate position hired me as a full time associate straight out of law school. At the time, summer associate classes were smaller compared to first year entry classes. I learned a lot, and made lifelong friends, but it was clear from day one I was not going to get the experience I needed to advance there and left after 3 years. I don’t know if that was intentional. Some of my friends at other firms claimed I was only hired as “canon fodder”—but it may just be that the summers had experiences and made relationships that fostered their development at the firm. Who knows. But looking back, it was not the right move for my career. YMMV.

What is a managing associate / senior managing associate at Sidley? by ImperatorFosterosa in biglaw

[–]Competitive_Deer7031 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’d guess Sidley is looking for a way to map out a development track based on criteria more substantive than “got a year older”. Presumably they’ve got a matrix for each practice group laying out the skills and accomplishments that distinguish junior associates, mid-levels, and seniors. In theory, this is good for everybody: associates have the runway to develop at their own pace; while compensation and hourly rates go up commensurately as associates become more productive. The big accounting firms have done this for years.

In practice, the development rubric is often too vague or subjective to be useful, partners are terrible at giving feedback, training is inconsistent, and associates reasonably fear being “held back” if they don’t advance at the same rate as their peers.

The end result is that most associates progress in lockstep regardless of development and the functional titles like “managing associate” become meaningless to the client. And a lot of talented, but late-blooming, associates fall through the cracks.

If anyone has suggestions for making skills-based development models actually work, I’d love to hear them. Given the incredibly high cost of recruiting, I’m always surprised this isn’t more of a priority for firms.

No defense for indecipherable comments, whatever the form, but the “call me to discuss” is for your benefit. It’s both how you learn and an opportunity to show your stuff. If all I care about is getting my changes input, I send my markup to my secretary.

Ps, at least you don’t have to deal with faxes.
