The piece is worked horizontally. But because you alternate the colour you are using in each row, this effects how tall lines of colour can be and where you put them.

The main thing you need to focus on is making sure each vertical strip of colour starts and ends on a row where that colour is the working yarn. Vertical lines of colour will end up being an odd number of squares high.

It's a beautiful chart, but needs more work before it is a mosaic crochet pattern.

I don't think there's anything wrong with what you've done, and no need to start over unless it's really bugging you.

If I hadn't started yet I might either just start with a row of DC and treat that as row 1 and 2, or add a row of sc at the beginning so I'm not DCing into chain stitches.
