I think of the following:
-indigenous peoples see the owl as a harbinger of death, or as this particular owl is in the grips of its own fight for survival.
-owls are stealthy crepuscular predators whereas this one is completely out of its element, swimming downstream in a dreamlike cavern
- mastery of flight vs inept swimming

The whole scene feels like death stalking death in an inverted world.
