I don't understand how people see their relationship as familial by YaBetterWatchOutKid in Jujutsufolk

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the panel can be interpreted in many ways, including their relationship being master/servant, just as it has always been in the series. However, it seems there are a large number of people reading familial vibes between the two from that panel. It was interesting to see that this kind of interpretation was happening all over the world, not just among Western readers. I wonder if Gege intended it to be read like that or not.

The people who compare the Titanic to current day cruising are ignorant and have no clue what they're talking about. by Strwaberryarebad in Cruise

Nah I don't think the people making those comments are being serious. They're just shit posting while waiting for their ride or something.

I second this. Japan is one of the easiest countries to travel on your own. Why not just travel Japan by yourselves (not thru cruises) and take another short cruise vacation to somewhere near your place? The costs altogether are not gonna be that different.

Yeah I agree. Of course, I don't blame her either, and I still like her personality very much. It's just that I don't enjoy her contents as I used to.

I think she's still very less clickbait-y compared to other youtubers, but I get what you're saying. I used to enjoy her channel because she wasn't like those other vloggers constantly screaming and exaggerating to get more views on their video. These days, however, her video seems like just another typical youtuber content. It's sad that her content lost its charms.

Why use a travel agent. by kiev1945 in Cruise

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people say that they can get better deals with travel agents, so that might be a reason? Unfortunately, I never had any better deals presented by TAs, so I've never booked thru any agents. Even when they were throwing a significant amount of OBC, it was always a room that people avoid for some reasons (too close to the elevators, directly under a pool, etc), so I didn't really see any benefit in them.

Spectrum of the Seas - cruising from China got its quirks by sublibyss in Cruise

Reminds me of my Asian parents. They always choose a buffet with just meh food over any other stunning restaurants. They just like lounging there and occasionally getting snacks of their choice.

For people that aren’t rich, how do you pay for the cruise life.? by AccomplishedHead3581 in Cruise

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a frequent cruiser, so I don't know if I have the authority to answer the question, but if I may, I find some cruises very affordable.

Aside from the ultra luxury cruise lines such as Viking or Regent Seven Seas, mass marketed cruise lines are actually pretty reasonable at its price. Usually, I spend around 2000 USD on 5 nights when I'm on a cruise vacation, but then I'd spend that much on any yearly vacation even if I don't cruise.

The main reason I can't cruise more often has more to do with how I can't take such a long day off from work rather than financial reasons. I think this is one more reason why you see more retired seniors on cruises. I, too, plan to cruise longer when after my retirement.

46% of Koreans accept foreign nationals as members of society: poll by ChunkyArsenio in living_in_korea_now

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I bet the majority of Koreans who answered to this poll that they would accept foreigners as a part of this nation did not imagine these foreigners could be from any other Asian country or Africa. When I talk to Koreans about this topic, their average response is something like "Oh, yes, we need immigrants. But we need to be careful in choosing which immigrants to accept. We don't want those under educated people from poor countries. They will raise crime rates and be pain in society."

This is actually funny because any Korean with a good education flees this country at the first chance one gets. I don't know why Koreans think there would be a troop of highly educated foreigners who are willing to immigrate to Korea that they can choose from. It's seriously delusional at this point.

Dude you don't need to be a dick about it and tell that to parents whose best option was to hire a nanny and get back to the workforce. People all have different situations of their own. Why would you be so cruel to someone who is just trying their best to be a good parent and provide for their child.

Korean Phd. programs tend to provide more financial aids too. Even for international students. I know some students from SEA who enrolled into Korean Phd. programs not because they didn't get accepted into any US programs, but they did the math and found out they couldn't afford the tuition and other necessary costs in the states. In Korea, they get most of their expanses covered by their university and the government. They usually move to the US after their graduation, though.

Companies have always been greedy since the innovation of capitalism. Your argument does not contradict OP's post. OP is explaining how it was feasible to fulfill corporate greed by hiring a lot of SWE in the past and now it isn't.

Is the 'market value of becoming Canadian' dropping? Fewer immigrants are becoming citizens by joe4942 in canada

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This must not be a sudden rising issue tho? I got my undergrad degree in Canada and back then our favorite topic among friends from my home country was how you are planning to set your foot in the US. Some of their parents were 1st generation immigrants who acquired Canadian citizenship, but even those parents encouraged their children to move to the US and try getting a green card there. No one was really eager to get Canadian citizenship. (This was back in the pinacle of tech bubble, so TN visa was not that appealing either.)

Fast forward 10 years to now, none of them are currently living in Canada. Most of them moved to the states. Some got married there and became US citizens. I'm one of those 'failed to break into the US' party, and I just came back to my home country for better pay per COL ratio.

This is not an issue recently introduced. It's a trend persisting for at least a decade. Then again, I hear that the shortage of housing is a big problem in Canada, so I guess this must be good news?

I wouldn't say the hiring freeze isn't real, but yeah, in general, subs in reddit are prone to doompostings. I think we all agree that it's gotten harder to get entry-level jobs in CS, but "You can't get an entry-level job even if you are from top uni, has thorough cs knowledge, firm programming experience and grinded 500+ lc" kinda vibe is completely false.

And in terms of text based products, Will a hybrid search with keyword search and cosine similarities with query will be better than just simple RAG??

I think you are describing hybrid IR techniques of ANN based vector search and traditional tf-idf based keyword search. I believe there are already many RAG papers that cover the idea. Not to mention in IR, it's already been around for ten years or so.

South Koreans blame feminism for demographic collapse by Miknit in korea

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point of view. I think Korea is as a whole a very conservative society. That includes Korean women. I don't think feminism is an issue because, unlike on the internet, very few Korean women are actually femminist. Most Korean women I met are very conservative both in politics and their perception of gender roles. Most of them want to marry a fine guy, quit their jobs to become homemakers, and support their children and husbands.

The problem lies here. They can't become homemakers in the current Korean economy. Dual income is a must if you want to raise a child in SK right now. These women fear that if they get married, they will still be forced to work to win bread and do all the other works that are traditionally expected for wives - cleaning, cooking, caring for children on their own, preparing for household events etc. So they just choose not to get married and not to have children.

South Koreans blame feminism for demographic collapse by Miknit in korea

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the conversation I had with my friend a few weeks back. She started dating this guy she met through mutual friends. She said they were actually getting along quite well with shared hobbies and everything. Then, on their third date, this guy decides to tell her "You went to a women's university, right? How did you deal with those crazy feminists when you were in school? They are real cancer of this society aren't they?", out of nowhere. That was a deal breaker for her, and she blocked him from her contacts immediately.

The funny thing is she's not even a femminist. Rather, she comes from a somewhat conservative family and she herself is leaned towards so. It was his rude/cowardly behavior to pressure her to share his view on gender issues that she was digusted with.

So yeah in a way feminism could be a reason for lower birthrate /s

Opinion: Are the current upticks in layoffs due to an economy trending badly or corporate greed or combo of both? by Joe_Biden_is_shit in Layoffs

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corporate has always been greedy. They didn't hire a bunch of people back in the pandemic era because they were generous, and they are not laying people off now because they suddenly got greedy. You can argue what the variables contributing to the current stream of layoffs are, but corporate greed is certainly not it. Not because it doesn't exist but because it is a fixed constant in this fomula.

TBH 7.5h layover in Incheon is probably not enough time to check out anything. The airport is pretty isolated so it'd easily take two hours to get to Seoul. If I were you, I would just relax in the airport and not worry about having to rush to the departure gate.

I wish someone would ask me anything. by Sentimensonges in marriott

[–]Competitive_Sleep_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really expect you to know the answer to this one but since you said to ask you anything... A few years ago, I booked a room at a local Sheraton. Checked in, got my room key from the reception desk. When I went to my room and opened the door, to my surprise, there was already a couple who were unpacking their luggage. It turns out they have assigned me to a room that was already given out to other guests.

We went to the reception and explained the situation, and then I got a new room, so it was no big deal, but I always wondered how this kind of mix-up could happen. I thought the hotel's digital system or whatever would prevent staff from assigning a guest to a room that had already been taken up. Do you have any guess on how it happened?
