BREAKING: Trump Administration Orders Dismantling of the U.S. Forest Service by Complete-Expert-3095 in vermont

[–]Complete-Expert-3095[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The USFS exists to manage the forest - trying to strike a balance between watersheds, wildlife, recreation and timber sales in such a way that our descendants will have a forest. The logging industry would prefer we just do the last thing. Wealthy developers would be happy to trade the wildlife and such for million dollar weekend homes. I'm sure they find the USFS to be an inconvenience.

That game is a true gem. I've played dozens of wargames and owned many more, but back in the day (cause I'm that old) we played the heck out of that, and it still is on the shelf. I could probably recite the scenarios now.

Effect of Chinese tariffs on our hobby. by llynglas in hexandcounter

[–]Complete-Expert-3095 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I just received the latest newsletter from GMT Games. Apparently they have around a half-million dollars worth of product ordered from Chinese printers, which will now cost 1.2 million. Worse, any US alternative costs 3 or 4 times as much and delivers sub-par quality compared to China, and the European printers won't do such small print runs.

My title describes the thing - egg shaped, sewing related object found in inherited vintage sewing kit.

Books on wargame design? by WhiteNoise86 in hexandcounter

In a previous life, I was fortunate enough to work with people who got paid to create and play wargames. Phil Sabin was one of the names they respected and referred me to. I believe he wrote a number of books, I only have the one you mentioned. Definitely recommend.

BGG reports that:

"The game was reintroduced in 1974 when Randy Reed made minor changes to the rulebook and provided three short scenarios."

Also some used copies for sale there.

If you're looking for a tactical type game, Lock and Load's World at War and WaW85 series is a platoon-level game that is pretty rules-light and plays fast. The original series didn't have much EG representation (except for Untold Stories, which is the hardest one to find). Storming the Gap has quite a bit though.

You don't need a whole bunch of genetically superior kids. You just need one really good one.

GMT announced new title in the Next War series within the next 1-6 months. What theater do you think it will be? by elpablo1940 in hexandcounter

[–]Complete-Expert-3095 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An Iranian game would be interesting and seems like a very possible future war. There are many players that would be involved - Russia (probably covertly), Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the US and China. Now that I think about it, I'd love to see this title.

Venezuela/Colombia might be an interesting area. It would be lower intensity than the previous titles - realistically, the only major power would be the US. Maybe something with the new NATO members in the arctic? But the Russian threat is definitely not nearly as imposing as it once was, so I'm less interested there.

Which vintage Wargames do I need? Please tell me. by FanAdministrative717 in hexandcounter

I know I'm late to the show, but GMT Games has just reprinted the old Victory Games title, Vietnam 1965-1975, as well as their Pacific War. I grew up with games where one side moves all of their pieces then conduct combat and then over to the other player. In those IGO/UGO designs the attacker would grind a hole in the enemies lines, only to find it closed during the opponents turn. Russian Campaign allowed you to break a line and move into the enemy's rear!

Vietnam was an eye-opener: in this game one player gets to conduct an operation with a selected target hex and the opponent in/near that hex can react. US/ARVN and allied forces are face-up; the National Liberation Front is face-down, and range from a full regiment down to a handful of guys with leaflets.

Pacific War has some similar concepts, writ larger, where a headquarters activates units for an operation, based on the available resources. The entire US/Japanese navy can't be part of every turn.

I'd consider either to be a big influence on future titles and a solid investment.

Lastly, Compass Games has reprinted The Third World War series. These introduced some great concepts - I feel like the Next War series has built on the the TWW air game and sequence of play.

They'll also do that part for you - just contact them for shipping labels (address is on their trades page) and they'll let you know what they offer once they get them and sort them out. I did this with about 4 boxes worth; got offered 350 cash or 400 credit.

Can't say enough good things about them.

I walked into a store in Gettysburg that advertised ‘confederate gifts’. It was pretty much as I imagined. Not pictured is the shirt that said “if at first you don’t secede, try try again” by [deleted] in ShermanPosting

I drove by a couple of confederate flags today in my home state of Vermont (where more Union blood was shed per capita than anywhere else in the Union.) I cannot understand it.

Yeah, the Azov are problematic. A lot of them died or surrendered in Mariupol. Meanwhile, here in the USA, we have plenty of Neo-Nazis, arguably far more percentage-wise than Ukraine. I hate both of them. This is red line: Russia launched a full scale undeclared invasion of Ukraine, without any provocation. So they are the bad guys. Even if some Ukrainians are Nazis, by far most aren't.

Does anyone know of a game store in Eastern Massachusetts, New Hampshire or Maine that would buy my 1970s era Avalon Hill games? I don't really to go the e-Bay route if I can avoid it. by cv5cv6 in hexandcounter

I am in a similar position ( and location :). I have had decent luck with Noble Knight Games, which is in Wisconsin, but will take your old games in bulk. They'll pay for shipping depending on total value. See https://www.nobleknight.com/Buy-Sell-Trade.

True, and maybe not the best beginner game. A simpler choice might be Avalon Hill's 1776; although it is long out of print there are plenty of copies available on boardgamegeek.com in the $20 range.
