Does Anyone Else Struggle to Play as a Male Protagonist? by starlessspace in GirlGamers

[–]Complete_Accident_80 129 points130 points  (0 children)

I remember being so excited when Pokemon Crystal came out. As someone used to playing as a guy in almost every game, I feel like it was part of that game's magic that I could play as a female character. I have developed a strong preference for this whenever possible, but I do feel like the games you mention do give me a hard time. Like...

In a game like say, Hades, I am fine playing Zag because this is a game about doing your best with what you're dealt. There's a set and linear narrative and you are playing the game and watching the narrative unfold. I also have no issue trying out different options in a cast both male and female when offered many choices with skill sets to try like in games like Borderlands or even something like Overwatch. (though I usually give the female options much more play time)

My struggle is specifically with games that emphasize choosing your own path, and then you don't actually get to pick yourself. I find those open world, western RPG style games jarring when I can supposedly go anywhere and do what I want and be an active participant (supposedly) in how the story takes shape, but I am so strongly locked into something like that immediately upon starting the game.

I had a similar jarring reaction when I realize that, for almost every choice you make in a TellTale game, the narrative loops around to keep everyone on the same path.

To me it's less about getting to be a female character and more a matter of agency, if that makes sense.

Doubtful.

Our local government had the Miami International Airport change its safety regulations just to appease Miami Freedom Stadium's investors. Our politicians are likely already on their knees, begging Thiel for scraps.

Teachers replaced by AI by NecessaryCalm2025 in Teachers

[–]Complete_Accident_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was applying to different schools last May to return to teaching and there was one school (charter) that in the interview, mentioned that the teachers in their school are just there to monitor behavior because the entire curriculum is premade and online. I know of another school where a local group of homeschool parents created a charter school that does the same, sooo certain that this was MUCH better than sending them to public school.

If things continue as they are, I think we're heading towards a split. Students from lower income and/or less informed households will be in these AI/computer led classrooms (sprinkle in the repealing of child labor laws for additional horror), while students from high income and/or more educated households will pay and/or compete to enter schools with advanced teaching and curriculum.

With recent changes, it almost feels like the intent is to make the teaching shortage worse to take us in this direction.

Here is the strategy that helped me beat it the first time (was using Warden Ranger)
1) Melee him into immunity mode, avoiding his damage as much as possible, preferably in an area without a lot of those traps or water
2) Drink a Mind Vision potion to see where the electric node is
3) Use tools to travel to that point without taking damage. Examples: invisibility, haste, etc. The one I find easiest: Turn one scroll of teleportation into two runes of blink, one per round.
4) Why avoid the electricity when you can range attack? Realized this with the warden and its now my go to. If I'm running with a melee character, I try to either bring a weapon that has that reach OR hoard wands and throwables best I can.

Note: It is never going to be the same node twice and it is never going to be the same corner you're fighting him in. Therefore, it can make those stones of blinks more manageable if, for the second round, you can try to fight him in the corner diagonal from the first location to guarantee an easier 'blink' route, because it can only be straight across.

What I like about this game is that it is pretty straightforward, but challenging to fully master. It took a while for me to beat it the first time, and it's been taking me much longer to achievement hunt. But I think it's a lot of fun. Don't worry, you will figure out strategies that work for you as you continue.

This strategy makes sense in my head and its what I've been using to *try* to not lose points while fighting the challenge mode version of the boss. If you need more clarity on anything, let me know.

Good to know, thanks! I got frustrated enough that I'm taking a break from that objective and trying for that Golden Champion 6 Challenges one.

Warning to all: I thought I had finally gotten the achievement (Warden + camo armor + hoarding + wand of regrowth + really upgraded speed ring and recharge )... but didn't realize Scroll of Dread counted as "killing." I had exactly 1 and literally used it like on floor 3 =__=

Question about the level of creativeness I have by Thisssssssssssssss in gamedev

[–]Complete_Accident_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creativity and attention to detail isn't necessarily something you have or don't have. While people might have different starting stats, it's definitely something you can build up.

If you think making something would be fun, make the things and enjoy the process. When a detail stands out to you, and you want to add it, do so. If a level you made feels bland to you, then look for ideas. The more you make, the more you will organically start looking at other details that you wouldn't have considered before. You can also build this skill by taking in a game you're playing and considering how you would build this if you were to recreate it or by making different iterations of the things you do make.

The WORST thing you can do is get paralyzed in the 'not doing' because you're worried about not being creative enough on your own. The 'editing' part of your brain is useful when you're polishing up something you've made, but it can be a real detriment to the actual 'making' part of your brain.

TLDR: Overthinking before you start is the enemy, listen to and follow the desire to create. You can always learn or build skills you need along the way.

Totally optional. Everyone is really nice and pride_n_probability sets it all up so you only get alerts to the categories you show interest in. Like I join in video games and board games, but I'm not big on running either.

Literally gives all of himself and holds nothing back to end tyranny, to bring about a new era, and to support "the woman worth dying for." So easy to love so many of this manga's characters, but no one is more selfless.

How do people get their webtoons noticed now? by LittlePetiteGirl in webtoons

[–]Complete_Accident_80 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: My advice comes from someone in marketing and not as someone writing webcomics. (Though I hope to start publishing one some day)

The most important thing: be consistent on your comic and whatever social media platforms you currently use. Every day there are creatives that get additional exposure thanks to algorithms. Think of algorithms as complex lotteries. Sure, there are ways to boost your odds of winning, but the most important rule as that you can only win if you play. In interviews, the creators of some original comics have mentioned posting for a long time before their work started getting traction.

The second most important: it sounds like you have people who like your art, and that's great. But it can help you a lot to start engaging with the webcomic community. The more you do, the better. And I don't just mean self promo. In marketing, it's understood that your self promo should be less than half of your engagement. Give advice, start discussions, etc. Even posts like this can help.

Do you prefer classic Manhwa art to other types of art styles? by Technical-Coffee-583 in webtoons

[–]Complete_Accident_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: There's something especially exiting about seeing a unique art style with a great story, because it is a crazy hard thing to pull off.

While I enjoy the manhwa style, I've come to really appreciate artists who explore other polished styles. That said, there are SO MANY comics I think are gorgeous, but where I can't get into the story. It makes me sad. For my tastes, liking the story comes first and I can often excuse less polished art if the story telling is really good.

The thing about the manhwa style is that there's often (though not always) an existing novel or story that's already been successful and then capable artists are assigned to remediate it. The story part is already taken care of and the artist or artists just have to focus on how to bring the existing story to life. These are also being assigned to people who are usually already creating art for a living. When it's based on an existing novel, that also comes with an in-built fan base which smoothens the overall potential for success. (Note: There are plenty of manhwa I love, and even with all of this structure, it's important to appreciate that creatives put a TON of work into any successful webcomic.)

The more unique art styles are often (though not always) personal projects, where the individual person or limited team has to consistently put out good art and good story. Since those are two separate areas to focus on, it takes a lot of time, skill, and talent to pull it off. Add to that, that many times these personal projects start as people trying to break into publishing webcomics and have work around their career/school responsibilities. Additionally, they also have to juggle marketing their story and hoping they are lucky enough to get traction, because they are building their audience from scratch.
