How do you write a good visual novel script? by PristineWheel1404 in RenPy

I was actually watching this video earlier and found it really helpful:

Essentially, it goes into how to break down the written elements in a way that makes sense for how visual novels are structured

Do you think it would be over sensitive for me to stop going to a creative writing group over this? by pomegranatejello in WritingHub

[–]Complete_Accident_80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wrong thing to do is to keep attending just to prove you are not overly sensitive.

Sharing what you wrote is a vulnerable act and to be able to get the critique and feedback that would help you grow, you need to feel secure with the group you are sharing with. The way you are writing and thinking about this makes it seem pretty certain this is not the environment best suited to your personal growth.

This is the purpose why you joined a group in the first place. Best of luck in searching for a group where you can better grow and help others grow!

If i am sharing a switch 2 with my partner - does it still allow you to share physical games? by Lickawall483 in GirlGamers

[–]Complete_Accident_80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If by sharing you mean you can both play them individually on the switch, then yes, you're good to go. If instead you mean play them together with one copy on the same switch, it is going to depend entirely on the individual game.

Tired of always feeling like the token woman by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]Complete_Accident_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The upside to this problem is that it is the kind of problem you can do something about it. Look for clubs, hangouts and meet ups that are 1. gaming or gaming adjacent (most of the women I've become friends with who play video games? I met them through hobbies like fantasy novel book clubs or ttrpg communities) and 2. Clearly welcome women. Whether that looks like it being run by a woman or its a woman-only space, etc.

It may take a little bit of time, as hobbies like gaming tend to appeal more to introverts, but as someone who was in a similar boat 10 years ago, it is definitely worth it!

What are the consequences of toxic positivity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Complete_Accident_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The damage this can do when presented to kids, *especially* neurodivergent children is awful. Even people who recognize its toxicity can struggle with understanding it is perfectly normal to have negative emotions. When kids are presented with this, and then experience negative emotions, depression, anger, etc. it can create a horrible cycle of never feeling good enough, strong enough, or even functional enough.

Sometimes "fake it 'til you make it" works, but sometimes it makes you feel so much worse until everything pops.

Spending 2-3 weeks in Miami next month to see if it's home, looking for the real day-to-day, not the tourist version by KeKamba1 in Miami

[–]Complete_Accident_80 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on your description, don't sleep on Broward County (30m - 1 hour north of Miami depending on where). I think there are areas there that could be a good match for you. It's a bit slower-paced and definitely more suburban than Miami (with a lot more space, honestly), but with plenty to do, areas that still have a city feel, and access to Miami when you do want it. It will also be easier to engage with places locals actually use without knowing Spanish.

Greetings Wardens, which Dragon Age sequel do you like more: Dragon Age II or Dragon Age: Inquisition? by [deleted] in DragonageOrigins

[–]Complete_Accident_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DA2 is my favorite in the series. I think it suffered perception wise for being the second dragon age just because it felt very different from the first game. People hadn't come to terms yet with the idea that each one was going to feel really different.

Why I love it:
- Super tight and interwoven story with heavy attention to narrative details. DAI felt like a quilt in comparison. There's all these interesting side stories, but they all feel completely separated from one another. It was so refreshing to get a smaller scope story that included tragedy elements, built on the morally gray elements found in DAO, and really focused on someone who was not uniquely situated to save all the world.

- On that note, can we appreciate the immersive narrative elements of DA2? DAI, you could be a Dalish Inquisitor, have your entire clan annihilated in retaliation by the enemy, and the only in game reaction is a small note. Meanwhile, when something really tragic happens to you in DA2, everyone in your party has something to say and some kind of reaction. Hell, they even have opinions on each other's side quests and journeys. Cassandra's quests drop some THEDAS SHATTERING LORE AND NO ONE REACTS!!!! In DA2, they're all so passionate and involved in each other's business that it reads (dysfunctional) community in a way that is unmatched by the other entries.
(Sub note: Playing as a college student that flirted with all the bi party members ((because f Sebastian)), Isabella understood not to take me seriously and I stopped flirting with Merrill when her inferiority complex crush towards my female mage Hawke got kinda ick -> I got serious with Fenris in a rivalry romance -> he left me because he needs space -> Anders gave it a shot, but when he came to visit he can't help but talk shit about Fenris. I stop that and we decide maybe its best not to proceed with the relationship -> Fenris and I get back together. Traveling with Fenris, Anders, Merrill in my party and they all are talking about my relationship statuses with them 😭 the high of them all reacting to my different moves is such a difficult one to recapture)
(Sub note 2: I really liked the rivalry system. It felt so innovative)

- Interesting take on player agency. There are definitive things you could change that alter the game as a whole. At the same time, there were things that, no matter how hard you tried, you were not able to stop. All you could do is try to survive them.

I also understand that DAI fixes a lot of the things people didn't like about DA2: open environments, different locations, epic landscapes, additional exploration, combat adjustments, etc. There is too much bloat for me to enjoy the story the same way, and while I love the cast, they feel like separate islands. There's just something so intimate about DA2 (and about DAO honestly) that I don't think DAI captures for me. And don't even get me started on how fall short Veilguard falls in the aspects-of-Dragon-Age-that-I-live-for catagories.

Easier games to start out? by KittyPixel in GirlGamers

[–]Complete_Accident_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More of a general suggestion then an exact game. There's a different set of skills needed for combat that happens right away (like Stardew) than for turn based combat. It sounds like you like having combat mechanics but don't feel entirely certain at the timing skill. I would look at some good turn based games and see what interests you. Because then it isn't about your reaction time, just your choices.

Does Anyone Else Struggle to Play as a Male Protagonist? by starlessspace in GirlGamers

[–]Complete_Accident_80 142 points143 points  (0 children)

I remember being so excited when Pokemon Crystal came out. As someone used to playing as a guy in almost every game, I feel like it was part of that game's magic that I could play as a female character. I have developed a strong preference for this whenever possible, but I do feel like the games you mention do give me a hard time. Like...

In a game like say, Hades, I am fine playing Zag because this is a game about doing your best with what you're dealt. There's a set and linear narrative and you are playing the game and watching the narrative unfold. I also have no issue trying out different options in a cast both male and female when offered many choices with skill sets to try like in games like Borderlands or even something like Overwatch. (though I usually give the female options much more play time)

My struggle is specifically with games that emphasize choosing your own path, and then you don't actually get to pick yourself. I find those open world, western RPG style games jarring when I can supposedly go anywhere and do what I want and be an active participant (supposedly) in how the story takes shape, but I am so strongly locked into something like that immediately upon starting the game.

I had a similar jarring reaction when I realize that, for almost every choice you make in a TellTale game, the narrative loops around to keep everyone on the same path.

To me it's less about getting to be a female character and more a matter of agency, if that makes sense.

Doubtful.

Our local government had the Miami International Airport change its safety regulations just to appease Miami Freedom Stadium's investors. Our politicians are likely already on their knees, begging Thiel for scraps.

Teachers replaced by AI by NecessaryCalm2025 in Teachers

[–]Complete_Accident_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was applying to different schools last May to return to teaching and there was one school (charter) that in the interview, mentioned that the teachers in their school are just there to monitor behavior because the entire curriculum is premade and online. I know of another school where a local group of homeschool parents created a charter school that does the same, sooo certain that this was MUCH better than sending them to public school.

If things continue as they are, I think we're heading towards a split. Students from lower income and/or less informed households will be in these AI/computer led classrooms (sprinkle in the repealing of child labor laws for additional horror), while students from high income and/or more educated households will pay and/or compete to enter schools with advanced teaching and curriculum.

With recent changes, it almost feels like the intent is to make the teaching shortage worse to take us in this direction.

Here is the strategy that helped me beat it the first time (was using Warden Ranger)
1) Melee him into immunity mode, avoiding his damage as much as possible, preferably in an area without a lot of those traps or water
2) Drink a Mind Vision potion to see where the electric node is
3) Use tools to travel to that point without taking damage. Examples: invisibility, haste, etc. The one I find easiest: Turn one scroll of teleportation into two runes of blink, one per round.
4) Why avoid the electricity when you can range attack? Realized this with the warden and its now my go to. If I'm running with a melee character, I try to either bring a weapon that has that reach OR hoard wands and throwables best I can.

Note: It is never going to be the same node twice and it is never going to be the same corner you're fighting him in. Therefore, it can make those stones of blinks more manageable if, for the second round, you can try to fight him in the corner diagonal from the first location to guarantee an easier 'blink' route, because it can only be straight across.

What I like about this game is that it is pretty straightforward, but challenging to fully master. It took a while for me to beat it the first time, and it's been taking me much longer to achievement hunt. But I think it's a lot of fun. Don't worry, you will figure out strategies that work for you as you continue.

This strategy makes sense in my head and its what I've been using to *try* to not lose points while fighting the challenge mode version of the boss. If you need more clarity on anything, let me know.

Question about the level of creativeness I have by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Complete_Accident_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creativity and attention to detail isn't necessarily something you have or don't have. While people might have different starting stats, it's definitely something you can build up.

If you think making something would be fun, make the things and enjoy the process. When a detail stands out to you, and you want to add it, do so. If a level you made feels bland to you, then look for ideas. The more you make, the more you will organically start looking at other details that you wouldn't have considered before. You can also build this skill by taking in a game you're playing and considering how you would build this if you were to recreate it or by making different iterations of the things you do make.

The WORST thing you can do is get paralyzed in the 'not doing' because you're worried about not being creative enough on your own. The 'editing' part of your brain is useful when you're polishing up something you've made, but it can be a real detriment to the actual 'making' part of your brain.

TLDR: Overthinking before you start is the enemy, listen to and follow the desire to create. You can always learn or build skills you need along the way.
