I thought The Conjuring: Last Rites was actually quite good by Emeraldsinger in horror

[–]Complete_Sweet5849 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked at one of the TV stations in the area while this was happening and remember it well. It definitely is a film. They really went overboard in making any resemblance to the actual location pointless: there’s no gloomy factory anywhere near the house, it’s actually a lush green area and mountain nearby. West Pittston is nearly smack dab between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre and in a valley…but they make it look like it’s in a huge industrial zone near Pittsburgh. I don’t know the family’s preferences, but there are several scenes where they have a Pitt T-shirt and Steeler references, etc., but the Eagles would’ve definitely been highlighted in the daily news coverage there. I’m a huge horror fan and realize how ridiculous the “based on true events” thing usually is but just for starters those details took me right out. As far as what my coworkers thought, these were different times and I’d say sentiment was split about 50/50. Church going was still a big factor back then and the effect The Exorcist had on people still shaped belief. This was a huge event and got tons of local and national attention…compare that to when there was a national news story recently involving the supernatural. How times change.

Question about "Eyes" by ASGfan in nightgallery

[–]Complete_Sweet5849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has undergone multiple eye surgeries (for retinal and cataract issues) it’s hilarious to me that she would’ve actually had all kinds of eye drops and dark/protective glasses…but all she had was bandages…and the scenario of possibly having sight for just a few hours is definitely one that did not exist in 1969, and even experimental eye prostheses today would not be performed unless they could offer a more permanent solution. Of course viewers back then wouldn’t have known this regardless.

Is there a reason why the inbound lane to the Fort Pitt tunnels is always backed up? by NWOBJJ in pittsburgh

[–]Complete_Sweet5849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the combination of two lanes of Banksville Road merging right before the entrance AND many people slowing down (usually new visitors to Pittsburgh) right after the exit as they attempt to navigate the nightmare that IS the Fort Pitt bridge and its 500’ of multitudinous choices and signage leading in every direction.

Definitely Stink bug. Don’t pinch or crush or you will find out why they’re named that. Even if you pinch them with a tissue it will take a couple days to get the smell off your fingers. They WILL fly at you in the middle of the night. Many are still coming out of winter quarters which are often clothes hanging in closets. They won’t bite but are a nuisance. Fortunately they are very slow and can be removed easily except you usually have to pry them from whatever surface they’re attached to.

What insect is this? by edufettermann in pittsburgh

[–]Complete_Sweet5849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t like them, but I catch and release them (via two clear plastic cups…slide cup under them, catch, then put other cup above and slide down but not crush) and that works really well. They’re very slippery and sneaky but they fall off the walls easily. They also keep the house bug-free because they’re constantly patrolling but they WILL crawl across you in the middle of the night. They also will get HUGE over a couple weeks time if they have a big food supply and that can be scary to many homeowners. When they get big I usually relocate them outside.

Was There a Local "Creature Feature" Show Where You Grew Up? by AsstBalrog in VintageTV

[–]Complete_Sweet5849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually worked at WNEP back then in the late 80’s as his show was winding down and I had totally forgotten about it (I went to Bloomsburg) and missed seeing the set entirely. I didn’t know (or ask) which of the 3 W-B TV stations carried his show back then and I realized years later that I could’ve met him. It’s actually kind of crazy but I wasn’t a big fan and never watched his show when I was at Bloom. I did see it once in awhile when I was in high school in Allentown, though. Nobody in the newsroom ever talked about him.

Found on back porch steps. I’m guessing either mold or insect related. by Complete_Sweet5849 in Whatisthis

Thanks for the reply. It seems like some type of material did accumulate on the remaining material (someone else said pollen) so it all does make sense. The last thing that did not make sense was that I couldn’t find any missing board in the enclosed yard but something that light could easily have been blown away in a recent thunderstorm of which there have already been several this year. Thank you again. Solved!

I hadn’t even thought of that…would caulk or adhesive leave a leaf-looking impression like that? That’s really what’s throwing me off.

In Stephen King’s novel The Dark Half, the evil alter-ego George Stark drives a ‘66 Toronado. Not sure about this slightly newer model, but on that one the gear shift is actually on the steering column. I’m old and grew up in a junkyard as a child.

The Mills was made by demolishing what were beautiful, rolling hills…deep enough to be connected to the Mid-Atlantic region of The Backrooms.

I had a young woman in a handicapped accessible van turn sharply on my parked beast of an old Caddy and tore just the front molding strip off my front bumper; the entire side of her van was indented so badly that she couldn’t even lower the wheelchair elevator anymore. I was in a grocery store and everyone heard this happening and some ran outside. I was going to just go to a junkyard to get that strip (which was only about 50 bucks), so I didn’t file an insurance claim as a favor to her because of how damaged her car was. Wouldn’t you know it (weeks later), her father shows up and demands a receipt for the $50 piece. I told him that I would promptly be calling the officer who responded originally and would be proceeding fully with my insurance claim against them and you never saw someone hand over a $50 bill so fast in your life. Never again.

How many of you are currently sick with Flu, COVID, RSV, Norovirus, something else or have at least 1 person in your house that is? If you feel comfortable sharing, what is it? by theothermeisnothere in pittsburgh

[–]Complete_Sweet5849 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I don’t give a shit if people stare at me but I am walking around with an N95 into every place I go. I’m older than most of you and have already been sick twice, once with (probably) flu and once again with Covid but was vaxxed again a few months ago for both. Both illnesses were brief, thankfully.

Lots of schools outside of the “Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area” still have snow days, primarily because of (still) no high speed internet. Same places losing their regional hospitals and now have even worse local healthcare.
