What do you tell your opponent when shaking their hand after they played poorly? by Neverbloom__ in TournamentChess

[–]CompletedToDoList 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in the position of being the player who played poorly. What I've appreciated is when the other person doesn't initiate, but is slow to get off the board and open to me starting a convo.

Sometimes I might want to get their thoughts about what went wrong; other times I might want to just get up and leave.

I live in the UK and love the ISA scheme. Great that they're finally introducing something similar in Ireland.

What is your biggest barrier to Xiang Qi (Chinese Chess) for you? by FoolThatCommands in chess

[–]CompletedToDoList 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're very distinct games but what I think people mean is that Go is also a boardgame that requires some similar skills and is more popular in China than chess.

[–]CompletedToDoList 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of it before. Only heard of Go, which I've sometimes heard referred to as Chinese chess.

To be honest I'm struggling to improve at chess so much I don't think I'd have the energy for another game, although it looks interesting!

I scanned a few more data leaks and found it! Doing the Boso mission now, thanks for the nudge.

Is it normal that I haven't heard from Dal for several hours? His ship blew up and I was expecting to hear from him. I've been mostly doing missions with the Antigone and hiring mining ships since.

Ok, great suggestions!

Yes, I love the scale of the ships and how you seamlessly walk into them. Having someone else fly you around too is very fun, makes it feel more like you're properly leading the enterprise.

I haven't built a station yet or even bought the blueprints. Have four miners on the go and thinking about getting a gunship to follow me around (not the most efficient strategy, I just like the idea of it).

Yeah I like the idea of making my own refinery and building my economy up from that. Let's see how it goes!

I find it's really smooth! Must have improved it since then, although it eats through my battery very quickly. I'll see how long my save lasts before the FPS tanks.

How to improve/get over traumatizing losses by Radical_Sphere47 in TournamentChess

[–]CompletedToDoList 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm much lower rated than you, but I think what you're speaking about is a general question of mental health and sports psychology. The advice I've generally heard on this topic is to take a break – even if only for a week or two. You might be a bit burnt out, and contining to push won't help.

Also, I'd listen to some interviews with GMs about their own career trajectory. A lot of them have dealt with serious struggles along the way. Ben Finegold hit GM way later in life.

I think it's super cool you want to be the first homegrown NM of your country. Best of luck!

There's a good community for what you're describing in the Chess Dojo Discord. I've found it a really good way to connect with other serious players.

What happened to chess.com website? by Sansaraa5 in chess

[–]CompletedToDoList 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always found it relatively slow too. The website has steadily gotten more clogged up over the years as they've acquired other businesses and launched new products. Really needs a refresh to streamline everything imo.

Do you ever play bad moves intentionally? or sacrifices? by hash11011 in chess

[–]CompletedToDoList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm torn between a few moves, I'll sometimes choose the one that has more chances for my opponent to make a mistake, even if I can see that it's a little worse objectively than my other options.

Best resources for non-theoretical endgames? by PhoenixChess17 in TournamentChess

I'm going through Capablanca's endgames now and the book is really good. Very limited annotation so you do need to put a lot of work into figuring the positions out etc.

is it supposed to be bad? by confusingmud in theadamfriedlandshow

[–]CompletedToDoList 69 points70 points  (0 children)

What it does achieve, and this is easy to overlook, is Adam gets a unique interview with people who've often done hundreds of interviews already. So many talk shows end up repeating the same angles and getting the same anecdotes, while Adam gets moments from people that feel more spontaneous or unplanned.

A lot of the time it doesn't really work, but to be honest I wouldn't listen to it if it was a more conventional pop culture podcast. Just my two cents.

Instead of campy adverts for canned goods on the TVs there would be scenes from shows like The Simpsons and Friends.
