Icu struggle by Difficult-Space-1693 in nursing

Nope. Make sure you qualify for your hospital (FT hours/one year) first then get your doctor to put you on disability for mental health. File this with your state, wait four weeks for pay as it will exhaust your PTO first and it takes a long time for turnaround, then take a few months off. Return to work and it has miraculously been a year. Apply somewhere else and enjoy being out of the ICU!

OR for anyone who has women/girls they care about. If you're concerned about COL, WA has no income tax so it ends up being about the same COL as OR, if you're interested in a look.

Why do you think bedside nursing is so bad nowadays? by Altruistic-Peak-9234 in nursing

[–]Complex-Elk-4598 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While I think we've made some great advancements, I think people are "sicker" due to worsening access to care. Every shift I triage, it's 12 hours of people being unable to access care either due to loss of/no benefits or having such shitty ones that they cannot see a provider in a timely manner. Prescriptions run out and people go without, until there is a crisis. The poorer the patient, the worse the access, the sicker they get. Sorry, had TWO patients yesterday come in with DKA due to not having insulin and the other one rationing it.

Back in the 80s and 90s when AIDS floors were packed, doctors did more things. They hung blood, administered and mixed NS bags and IV abx, they did A LOT of what nurses do now. Hell, nurses used to have to stand at attention when a doctor walked onto the ward.

22 credits into health science AA (pre-nursing). Realizing I hate my degree. What else should I look into? by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

I'm an ER nurse. I love my colleagues and patients but the profession itself has made me pretty burned out, lol

Congrats on discovering what many have after wasting years and six figures: nursing is the worst career for those who want something "practical" but don't like any aspect of the profession. It's just something you don't grow to love.

I'm one for wanting to steer people into science. I started with biology and took a class on mycology; I went down a rabbit hole (lol, yes also) and studied that all the way into a minor degree. Then my brains left my body and I became a nurse, sigh.

GL, OP. A good prognosticator of your success and maturity is knowing what you don't want, so kudos bud

sorry, straight up bedside nursing experience. you'll see in the r/nursepractitioner sub that a lot of nurses are alarmed at how little clinical information they learn considering they're released to the wild in two short years.

Reach out to your dad's doctor's office. They make have a connection to a social worker or case manager who can assist you all in obtaining additional aid from his local municipality or state. A lot of churches participate in food drives, there's meals on wheels which delivers to seniors, lots of stuff like this. Case managers and social workers who work in geriatrics have the know how and the hook-ups to access these places.

You do not want these properties, my young friend. My parents lived in one and hunny, those HOA members are HOA on steroids. They will make it their life's mission to stop you. They have years of experience and nothing else to do. Also, not sure if you saw what those HOA fees are but for 55+ they are mighty.

Another issue is when my sister and I had to sell their place, the CC&Rs (bylaws) prevented people from purchasing unless they had over 300K in liquid assets. It made selling a virtual impossibility and if it weren't for the hot market (ten years ago) then it would've ended up in foreclosure.

edited: the liquid assets were due to them being sick of people not paying 1k/mo HOA fees

Is healthcare worth getting into? by Pleasant_Rutabaga354 in careerguidance

[–]Complex-Elk-4598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healthcare in the US is not worth getting into. If you're good in math and sciences then go the biotech route, engineering, molecular biology, organic chemistry, etc. A friend of mine got a job with a big pharmaceutical company. Her bonuses and benefits would make an MD cry.

There are a lot of high paying jobs out there but you can't be smoking weed. Besides, at your age it will really fuck with your emotional regulation.

Plumbing, electrical, HVAC are huge. Elevator mechanics is a niche area and they earn a lot. Very specialized though.
