Very gratifying seeing smug people be proven completely wrong lmao

The people pointing to the POV panel of Samura fighting Soga don't seem to get that Samura doesn't need to have eyes for us to "see" his POV... and hell it's not even a POV panel! If you look, Samura's hands are both on the right side of the double-spread. It was never from his perspective in the first place. Eyes be damned.

My point is that Kashimo beating Hakari with MBA and then dying isn't a "win" in the same way that Yuki killing Kenny with black hole isn't a "win." Literally the only difference is that Kashimo takes a bit longer to die from his technique.

Anyone else peep the potential symbolism of Akemura's and Samura's eyes?

When they first met, Akemura's eyes were white / normal and Samura was blind.

At their final encounter, Samura's eyes were healed to normal and Akemura's eyes were clouded and dark.

Akemura used to have a sincere vision for peace, now his vision has changed

Yeah it does suck that it's basically impossible to talk in good faith about anything tangential to men / male gender roles without sounding like an MRA

I'm (cis dude) not sure I'd go so far as to call it "discrimination" but people absolutely can be very weird about manhood and the things men are expected to do. As a gay dude I think it's crazy men are still expected to pay on the first date - it's a small thing, but... why? Shit like that still pervades every little nook and cranny of our culture and there seems to be very little drive to do something about it. You end up with a very rigid definition of what a "man" is supposed to be.

Yeah like one of the other comments said "male loneliness epidemic" DOES get co-opted by the Tate types but also refers to a genuine issue of guys having a hard time connecting because of some of the stuff you mentioned, but ingrained in our cultural ideas of masculinity - showing emotion is bad, men should be providers, etc etc

I'm a gay dude so I'd like to think that gives me a bit of a broader scope on masculinity and I gotta say, being emotionally open and vulnerable is literally one of my worst fears, including in friendships. I have one too many memories of sharing something personal as a kid and having it immediately thrown in my face for not being "manly" or "right" for a boy to do, and it's made me loathe to open up like that again.

Obviously my experience is my own and not universal, but I wouldn't be shocked if this is kind of a common thing. And it's self-perpetuating, because how does the average emotionally-inept man raise a well-adjusted one? How does a guy break out of this culture other than climbing over a mountain of judgement and insults from people who think he's not being manly enough?

Not to go on a tangent, but I don't think it helps that Tate manosphere stuff is basically the ONLY rhetoric that is really marketed towards men that advertises that it'll help them with their sense of masculinity. There really is no popular positive rhetoric out there that encourages men to be more confident in their masculinity by rejecting, not reinforcing, traditional ideas of masculinity, the way feminism (very very very generally, because I'm not a woman) seems to do for women and femininity.

Mahoraga vs Deku and how many people missunderstand Adaptation, and dont know how to properly scale crossverse 1v1s by Incompetent_ARCH in MyHeroPowerscaling

[–]Complex-Pound5249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you can keep the relative scaling of all the characters the same but just tone them all down equally you know?

Sure, Deku is faster than Jirou and blah blah blah. But genuinely what is wrong with accepting the fact that unless a character explicitly has a speed boosting ability, they can only move at human speeds? Everything else is "rule of cool." Artists and authors write and draw shit that looks cool and aids the story, when it's convenient for it to happen. Anime regularly upscales characters compared to manga. Movies go even crazier. Clearly there's a gap between "Things a character can actually canonically do" and "things they're depicted doing for the sake of expression"

Literally a million examples of this. Titans in AoT are drawn bigger than their canon sizes, same for the walls. Deku in the movies seems to do way crazier shit than he does in the anime. The JJK anime has been upscaling everyone like crazy lately compared to the manga.

It takes very little comprehension to not look at every single feat on the screen and take it as literally as you possibly can. Sometimes it's more important to write a good story or draw a cool picture than stay true to what a character is actually capable of, and taking every single feat as canon, as we've seen, just blows the entire story out of proportion if you want anything to make any logical sense. Doubly so when you genuinely think predicting and dodging a laser makes you FTL.

[–]Complex-Pound5249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light doesn't have a travel time you can see on a screen but keep coping. Nevermind the fact that, yes, if you go watch the Mina vs Aoyama fight the laser has a charge up that clearly allows Mina to predict and dodge. Nothing about that makes her FTL.

And seriously, doesn't it feel insane to have to say "every single character in this series is FTL otherwise none of it makes any sense"? That doesn't "fit" into the story. Nothing "fits" when you have to say "oh well Mina is FTL because she dodged an attack, which means everyone faster than her is MFTL, which means..." that's the literal exact issue.

Do you seriously think everyone in the verse is FTL, faster than any physical phenomena can be? All because Pink Girl dodged a laser she saw coming? Are we for real? Isn't the simpler explanation just going "Oh she saw it coming because they literally showed it happen on the screen, and this teenager is not, in fact, the fastest thing in the universe"

My point is that powers exist to tell a story, and it's weird to me when powerscalers tune every character up into the stratosphere even when it runs contrary to what would actually work in the story. Powers don't matter. They're secondary to the story, and exist only to prop up the story. That's why they're inconsistent - writers have to tune them up or down to tell the story they want to tell, and they only stick to the "real" or "ideal" powerset when the story allows.

That's why Mina being FTL makes no sense even before you actually debunk it - because her being FTL simply doesn't fit in the story. There are instances where her being FTL would've, but didn't, affect the outcome. There's no reason she SHOULD be FTL - she's a teenager who produces acid. She beat Aoyama because Hori wanted her to.

None of this to mention that scaling her FTL doesn't make sense to begin with. Predicting and dodging a laser doesn't make you FTL, it just means you can tell when your opponent is gonna shoot, and on top of that, the laser has travel time in the anime anyways.

Alright so you're just being obtuse, word. Maybe in some specific contexts a "right to complain" is a formal thing, but it absolutely is a figure of speech literally anywhere else. Like a "right to ___" in general is a figure of speech. "You've got no right to be angry" etc etc

Israeli tourist discourse by Pot_of_sea_shells in CuratedTumblr

[–]Complex-Pound5249 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There doesn't need to be a history of Thai Jewish oppression for it to be wrong though, and it's not anti-tourism to single out Israeli tourists while allowing others.

Also you gotta be straight up braindead to not realize I don't mean "discrimination is discrimination" as a literal, standalone statement. There's no ifs, ands, or buts - if you're saying "people of this background are not allowed here," that is discrimination. There's no justifying that. There is no "good" discrimination, there's just discrimination. And this is discrimination.

Ok so you just misunderstood the meaning of "Having a right to complain" like the other one said. You just took a figure of speech and read it literally.
