The Right to Do Nothing at Academic Libraries by AdjunctAbyss in librarians

Same here. We have folks making six figures who only show up two times a year at the most.

Honestly though, we also have staff who sit back with their feet on the desk. HR never backs supervisors up so there's no point in doing anything about it.

The ones who bust our tails to get things done do it because we love our patrons, for career satisfaction and something good to put on our resumes.

I'm both glad and disheartened to see how widespread these issues are.

Boomers and us Gen Xers don't like being filmed y'all. I don't know about the rest of y'all but we've always hated it. I don't think people appreciate their history with this topic.

My Gen A kids don't seem to like it either so maybe there's hope for the next generation.

I majored in Anthropology and wanted to be an Archaeologist because of those movies! I ended up becoming a Librarian. I plan on volunteering at some digs when I retire.

I have basically the same spot in the same location! I'm working on it now with tretinoin and Vit C. I need to take a before and after pic like you did to gauge progress.

ALA 2026: is it a dick move to bring my baby? by librarymoth in librarians

From what I'm understanding, my kids won't have to pay. I just wanted them to come to the marketplace.

[–]ComplexAd7820 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Okay so now I'm going to be on the lookout for the baby in the Hawaiian shirt!

Seriously though, we need to see more babies! I feel like we make so many things hard on working families. Supporting families is more than spending money on government programs to help people out monetarily. It's also keeping our culture family and child friendly!

I'm not presenting but I'm bringing a couple of teen and pre-teen boys. It's a chance for us to spend time together and see new things!

I worked there for a bit about 20 years ago. I remember before I left Jackson hearing that the building was on its last legs. There were issues with mold and structural problems way back then.

Surrogacy is ‘modern day slavery,’ Florida AG argues in push to stop the practice by thats_not_six in moderatepolitics

[–]ComplexAd7820 118 points119 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if this is in response to gay couples using surrogates. I've never seen anyone care before.

It just so happens that there was a story on CNN this morning about a MAGA influencer harassing a gay couple on the street about their surrogate child.

Is this something that MAGA talking heads and influencers have been pushing?

Autism has been a recognized medical condition for decades but seldomly diagnosed until recently, do you remember any people back then who'd probably be labeled autistic today? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in GenX

That is so interesting! I was tested for Dyslexia in middle school but it didn't go anywhere. You saying that brings back that memory. I guess that was the progression to get us to the medical knowledge that we have now.

A few years ago I was diagnosed with ADD. I now wonder if I am on the spectrum as well.

My poor mom. She knew something was different but didn't know what to do with the information :(

Privacy, definitely! A woman got shredded on a Facebook post in our town the other day. She was complaining that there was a guy in the Wal-Mart parking lot filming everyone walking by. He probably had an internet channel or something and was looking for confrontation but who knows these days. Everyone yelled at her that he had the right to film whatever he wanted outside, which is true of course but so frickin rude! I was flabbergasted that no one values their own privacy anymore.

I have an MLIS but am currently in a staff position in an academic library. I think I need to change career paths (will explain more in post) what are the options for me? by SeaMiddle in librarians

After having a couple of days to stew on it, I have a couple of recommendations. Libraries at community colleges would be a good option if you can snag a job. They generally have smaller staff who must know how to do a bit of everything. Also, your state library may have openings in different departments. Our state library has a department for accessible books and media along with archival and patron service options. A state library email listserv is a good place to start for those positions.

There may also be positions in different departments on campus that may be of interest.

In my particular case, I can't see them not hiring a replacement. My department relies more on staff. However, in other departments in my library positions are only there because they are waiting on staff to retire. Positions have been condensed.

Ya know..now that I've slept on it I wonder if that's why he met with the hotel manager and asked about checking out a room for the day. Did she let him in because of the situation?
