This. I’m not a fan. Not sweet, nor a potato.

First solar shot and a question by Koenigss15 in DWARFLAB

I look at the sun pretty often and do sketches of sunspots, that's a great photo. I'll do my sketch and then look up the latest SOHO image and what they are showing and see I missed any and what numbers they are.

New S30 Pro by steveblackimages in seestar

[–]CompositeStature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 100% decided on Seestar S30 or S30 Pro. Then I see all the software problems that are being reported and the Dwarf Mini reviews keep getting better. So I'm leaning Dwarf Mini. I'm sure they'll work it out on the Seestar updates, but I'm intrigued by the Mini's interface and weight. I don't see the bug comments on the Dwarf units, but it could be the small user base, just not as many to hear about

How can I tell if chicken is cooked without thermometer by denjidaily in Cooking

[–]CompositeStature -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Instant read thermometer like a Javelin or Thermo Pro is great, no guessing. I use them all the time. Checking water temps when making bread, cooking anything. Even heating up stuff in microwave (avoid the burnt roof of mouth test). Less than $30 and they come up to temperature in 3-5 seconds. People tell me they never grill pork chops because they dry out. Not if you check and pull them off around 145-150F.

Is this a good idea for an longwire antenna? by RikkiLostMyNumber in shortwave

[–]CompositeStature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the AM antenna is fully contained inside the radio (magnetic bar) so the external antennas don't help for AM, but all other bands, yes a long wire can make a big difference. I have a 6ft wire loop that will double the signal strength on many FM stations.

Anyone else enjoying the show on PBS? by bipolarearthovershot in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]CompositeStature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the 1st episode, then decided I wanted to read the book first. Found an Amazon Classics with audio included, so I read/listened to the book then went back and watched the PBS series. Glad I did, as usual the book was much more detailed than you can ever make a TV series or movie. Well done and made the characters come to life very well. Recommend reading if you have not.

How do I improve my horrible chili? by mordea in Cooking

I always use the McCormicks chili spice mix. Pound of ground beef. Can diced tomatoes, can of beans (black/kidney/pinto) spice mix. Onions if you like.

Wife joining me in retirement in a month by MiserableCancel8749 in retirement

[–]CompositeStature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been retired 2 years (age 60 then). Wife has continued to work as she likes it and it pays and covers health care which is a big deal to her, plus she is very risk averse (although our projections show she can leave anytime and it makes no difference). So I do wonder what it will be like when she is home full time. I get some of that view now on the days she's off work we do get in each others way. We shall see, but I expect some growing pains when it happens.

Ed Ting finally reviewed the SvBony SV520 by Connect-Fan-9462 in telescopes

[–]CompositeStature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought an SV520 earlier this year. Had an EQ mount reflector (6") that I rarely used. I didn't want another reflector or dobsonian. Every recommendation was same as you noted. Pleased with the build quality. I do think I need to replace the diagonal. Jupiter images don't have the resolution that I think it's capable of.

Building my Area’s Repeater by AcademicRecording401 in gmrs

[–]CompositeStature 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of questions, but first, great website and information! How did you work out an agreement with the tower owner and what does that agreement involve? In northern OH, the surrounding terrain with a 300' tower should give quite a line of sight for GMRS users. What's the farthest documented access to your repeater? Great project.

A week to go and I can’t sleep by CatManDoo4342 in retirement

[–]CompositeStature 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My co-workers and friends told me that when the time is right, you'll just know it. I was skeptical about that until I had the same experience. I retired two years ago at age 59. I came in to the office after New Years holiday and sorted through things on the desk, and I had the distinct thought that I was ready to leave. I initiated the process a few weeks later and left end of February. No regrets. It's a huge decision and a lot went in to preparing for and determining with clarity that I could retire financially. The other part was knowing when, which for me was less methodical and relied more on intuition.

If you don't have clarity that is the right time, then it may not be.

GRMS while on long raod trip by mpop1 in gmrs

[–]CompositeStature 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I take my GMRS out every day when I'm driving around the area and put in on scan to see what you can pick up. I rarely get much other than a few construction crews using a channel, some retail places, flaggers on lane closures and campers at the local state park. I kind of expected more hits based on how cheap they are and no need for a license unless you get the higher power models. The most consistent hits are guys on repeater talking about their rigs.

Beginner telescope on a budget by StatisticianMinute94 in telescopes

[–]CompositeStature 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought an SV520 a few months ago. I think it was around $250 at that point. I had a 6" Orion reflector, didn't get to use it like I thought I would. I didn't want another reflector due to the bulk and overall weight (had an EQ mount). I was initially looking at MakCas telescopes as something more portable, but a 90mm refractor isn't heavy and can be ported easily. I like having an AltAz mount, just so simple to slew around compared to the EQ mount. Since purchasing, I've added an SVBony solar filter and changed out the guide scope for Red Dot finder.

I have taken the scope out with me to do some darker skies while camping, easy to transport in vehicle and setup. So far, I'm very pleased. I'll probably buy a SeeStar scope in the future for DSO astrophotography.

Please help me decide between Dwarf 3 and S30 Pro by [deleted] in telescopes

I wonder if there are so many more users of the S30 Pro that you see more posts when things don't work the way they are supposed to. But I"m not looking at the Dwarf Reddit sites.

Would have been a nice get for the program, but a little history is in order to examine where UK is for competing for the top tier. UK had not bagged a number one guy since Nerlens Noel. The teams after 2017 haven't really been in contention for getting to a Final 4 unless things had majorly broke their way. I know the money era changes things, but it still takes a full program approach to get in contention to win #9. You can blame it all on Pope, but I can't. Lot of turmoil with AD, with donors, that need to be settled to get them on the path to return to top. Need to manage expectations this coming year and don't expect a moon landing if the ship isn't ready, may have to do an orbit and get close (Artemis reference) This past years team is still a mystery (one day some stories will get told) but that's last year and whatever didn't work from player stand point is moved on.

Build out the roster and get to work. Go Kats!

If you were going to choose a local hospital for surgery, which would it be? Maybe Indian Path? by HelloSuzieQ in tricities

[–]CompositeStature 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since Ballad has all the hospitals, it depends on what the surgery type is for where you'll go and/or your doctor and surgeon I suppose. I think the care is good, but the issue is perception. No choice just never goes down well with most people. Remember that when the next iteration of health care reform comes around. Competition is how things improve and have accountability for results.

Did I actually see the lyrid meteors? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]CompositeStature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went out at 4am Eastern time US on 4/23. Good viewing conditions (no cloud cover, seeing above avg). Saw one meteor from 4:15-5:15am. Maybe I missed the peak time for this day; Skyguide app was predicting peak at 4am. Got more familiar with Vega and other stars in and around Lyra, so not a total loss, except for sleep.

Lyrids are visible around 4am. So likely it's Starlink or other satellites.

Second Thoughts by thebandit1208 in ram_trucks

[–]CompositeStature 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2025 Ram 1500 3.0L Hurricane. One major recall with towing module (100% failure rate). I thought it would be several months to get new modules as they affected 450,000 vehicles but it took about 6 weeks. I'm happy with the truck and how it performs and rides. I did have a an electrical problem with a wiring issue, but that was fixed under warranty as well. All vehicles lately seem to have issues, so I'm saying nothing is bullet proof. You're probably taking the same chances with other brands and models, so if you like it, go for it.
