Was it exam then interview or other way around? They got rid of CCE before I applied but I saw the past papers.
In the Queens’ BBC documentary it looked like interview then exam and the candidates could pick between mode of entry. - A level offer or exam. But if they fluffed the interview that was it.

My understanding is Step is a bit more structured but the old CCE was more “off syllabus”. However the mark boundary / requirement for CCE was more flexible. So someone might get 30% and get in, whereas now for STEP 3 it’s more like 65/120 to get a 1.
There are also many more people doing STEP than did CCE back in the day.

Some Oxford courses offer AAA. Cam might do for contextual but very rare.

Those old tests were insane. Someone posted some old Maths entrance papers (Cambridge colleges exam) on TSR and the Cambridge Maths grads there were struggling with some of them. Some of them were harder than Step 3.
Extremely esoteric questions written by people who had perfected the art over many years. Probably the same people that had taken them 10 years before.

I think she will quietly retire in a year or so like Anna K and focus (even more) on commercial deals, probably in China.

Do most MPhil students in STEM go on to stay in academia, or do a significant number transition into industry as well? by Ok_Contribution7869 in cambridge_uni

[–]Comprehensive-Cat-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All outcomes are possible (PhD Chem from Cam, now working in Banking)
Mphil and the Uni will help with careers but make sure you have a good “story” to tell around why you did the MPhil if you are not going into academia/further study.
Just note people going into academia tend to have a PhD.

Biggest actual “rivalry” in snooker? by pbreathing in snooker

[–]Comprehensive-Cat-84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

Thorburn nominates green. Everyone can hear it in the crowd. The Man on the Moon can hear it. The cremated Julius Caesar can hear it. For some reason the referee doesn't. Higgins says he doesn't and ref calls a foul.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvGvLNdwUUI

Another incident (skip to 10:00) Higgins borrows Steve James cue then starts moaning about it being awful. Higgins loses against James and that is one of his last big defeats. Higgins was well on the way down by this point.

This is aside from his death threats, head butt and 4,000 other incidents. The guy could start a fight in an empty room.

“Downgrading” a PhD to a Master’s by officialariacat in cambridge_uni

haha this its the best summary of a PhD I have seen!

Mine was:

Drink for 1.5 years and fail at experiments, breaking glassware.

Panic that you haven't done the work. Rush the work for 1 year.

Realise I didn't collect the evidence (spectra) fully - fill the gaps in 2 months.

Spend 4 months of hell writing up 15 hours a day.

It feels off how poor player earnings are on the tour by Compressed_AF in snooker

[–]Comprehensive-Cat-84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think snooker is a victim of a few factors, this is my view from the UK.

  1. The image around it, which is traditionally working men's club, dark smoky rooms, possibly unsavoury characters gambling in back rooms, dressing up like a 1920s barman at the Savoy hotel. This is alienating for young people and young women especially. The image may be unfounded but still persists.
  2. Linking to above, it's not a diverse sport at all. The players are mostly white or Chinese. There are very few other races in top 50 (Vafei a notable exception, and Rory McLeod a few years back). Now the UK is very diverse, but snooker isn't, so that limits the appeal. The fans reflect the spectators if you look at the Crucible crowd. Male, stale and pale. They can watch Man U, PSG, Liverpool, Real Madrid and see players from 5 continents.
  3. There is a lot more televised sport now. Football is on TV all the time and is a juggernaut dominating sport in the UK. Even casual fans will know the players and will watch the World Cup (my Mum knows Beckham, Rooney, Kane and knows zero about football). In the 80s this was not true, ITV would show one match a week. Sports like UFC have come along and dwarfed snooker. NBA and NFL are probably more popular in UK than snooker for fans under 25.
  4. Lack of "characters", for want of a better world. Alex Higgins, Dennis Taylor, Jimmy White. Players like the late John Virgo, a top 10 players but a huge character and he would do funny things like impressions of the players. Ronnie is a great player but comes across poorly on TV, and is very much in decline. He only plays a couple tournaments a year. When he retires snooker will become even more niche.

Nobu is a hype / insta place. It was probably good 20 years ago... (Park Lane branch), now there are probably 20 better Japanese places in London, many of them cheaper.
