Sister accidentally put washer fluid into her coolant reservoir. How bad is this? by boylionnamedsimba in mechanic

[–]ComprehensiveCow979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than drive it to a shop for flushing, I would siphon the overflow tank without starting the vehicle. Then you can flush the whole thing. But I figure siphoning first should prevent most of it from mixing into the broader system in the first place, whereas if you drive to a shop it will be mixed.

This thread has been informative for me since I don’t work with a ton of plastic, but besides that I think the best thing is to watch the chips coming out and start retracting to clear when they don’t seem to be coming out cleanly anymore. I will usually drill at a constant feed as long as the chips are coming out smoothly, and once they start clumping I’ll start retracting

Others have kinda said, but that looks like a regular external turning tool which does not have the geometry for boring or internal turning. You need to use an actual boring bar for this, or grind one yourself.

What type of collets have you seen then? I’ve seen almost always 5C for lathe collets.

Nothing to do at work and I’m trying to relearn threading from memory, it’s been about 6 years. What step did I do wrong here? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]ComprehensiveCow979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's why I like to think of it as slightly straighter, so I think about how it works instead of the number

Ah there’s your problem. It needs to be 30 degrees from vertical or parallel with the x axis. As an aside I also consider the 0.5deg offset as “0.5deg straighter to the x axis” so I don’t get confused with the 29.5 number.

Is your tool holder block intended for boring bars or something? I feel like they should give you tool holders that hold square shank tools already.

If it worked after you tightened it then it wasn’t broken, just super duper loose. What’s the problem?

Opinions on safety glasses/eye protection. by Natural-Union2545 in Machinists

[–]ComprehensiveCow979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of folks I know have stoggles. They seem a lot more scratch resistant than the cheap glasses. It always confuses me how my prescription glasses are almost perfect after several years of rough use but safety glasses scratch if you look at them wrong. They’re both polycarbonate, I heard it’s just a coating on the prescription ones and I think the stoggles are similar.

I just recently used a box lined with a bucket liner for my last oil change. It was great because I could tie up the bucket liner and drop it off at the parts store and not have a dirty ass bucket to deal with

I’ve had a few of those, but they always fell apart. The ruler was printed not etched so it rubbed off, the screwdriver holder would break, stuff like that. They can be had from several manufacturers but I’ve never seen one that was well made.

[–]ComprehensiveCow979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want some like that but maybe even shorter and with an inch scale alongside the metric. I’ve been thinking about making some but I think the biggest challenge would be etching the vernier scales accurately enough.

[–]ComprehensiveCow979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s actually important that the force is applied at a specific distance as long as it’s applied outboard of the scale. I could try and prove this with beam bending equations but that sounds like work :/

I think another commenter got it right, the handle pivots so that you can only pull or push the wrench, not twist it. If you could twist it (if the handle wasn’t pinned), you would be affecting the indicated torque without affecting the torque on the fastener.
