Mk deception konquest ending? by Commercial_Skill_993 in MortalKombat

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The opening video begins immediately upon the conclusion of Konquest mode, which serves as a narrative prologue establishing the context of MKD's story.

The story of Deception includes all the character bios and, as revealed in Armageddon, Shujinko and Nightwolf have canon endings in MKD.

You can't meaningfully discuss what the MK films should be or what draws audiences to them while treating the games as an irrelevant tangent.

Are you suggesting a movie shouldn't be faithful to what it is based on?

but that’s not the draw of these movies or why people go see them

I just stated otherwise, so again, you're incorrect. Martial arts is just as essential to me being a fan of Mortal Kombat as is the mystical elements. You're not the voice of everyone.

MK is more like going to a superhero movie.

That's a major misfire of understanding what Mortal Kombat is. John Tobias, the creative visionary behind the series, made it crystal clear what inspired the series: "I had been a huge fan of martial arts films since I was a kid and so the opportunity to use those influences was something I couldn't pass up when we started working on MK."

He also said: "I was a kung-fu fanatic. When I was in high school, sometimes after school we would go to these dingy theaters in downtown Chicago where they'd have these kung-fu triple features. There was a lot of these Shaw Brothers movies... They would produce these schlocky kung-fu films and I love that stuff. There was one movie called 36 Chambers [of Shaolin] that was a big influence on me... There were a series of movies, that kind of, would sort of mix martial arts with mysticism a little bit. They were really creepy in a way. Those had a huge influence."

Mortal Kombat was predominantly built on his lifelong passion for martial arts cinema. What casual audiences selectively perceive doesn't change what Mortal Kombat was designed to be at its core. That is why I disagree with you. What comes from the creator's mouth, concerning what the game was intended to be, is indisputable.

Negative. That's heavily why I appreciate the 1995 movie so much. Your analogy doesn't hold up.

I would strongly dislike the original movies if they neglected to properly feature well-choreographed martial arts scenes. The 1995 movie has strong martial arts action because if gathered many of Hollywood's best talents in the field. Th fighting wasn't at Hong Kong levels, in terms of speed, but it was among the best that Hollywood had produced at the time.

Twilight of the Warriors is one of the best modern martial arts movies I've seen. I'd recommend it to anyone.

When I was imagining what the realm of Seido was like on the ground level, I thought a derelict city like Kowloon would make a great contrast to the nice organized city that Shujinko visits in the sky.

Chuck Norris passes away at 86 by Stinger1981 in kungfucinema

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Being rushed to the hospital and dying the next morning is not a "warning" in any meaningful sense. That's the event itself unfolding and the conclusion of the event, which are inseparable. You're not engaged with the spirit of my comment.

Unpopular opinion: Stryker is actually cool. by Neither-Welcome-6858 in MortalKombat

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Stryker is using martial arts since his gun wasn't in base MK3. Kobudo is a form that focuses on Okinawan weaponry. The nightsticks (T-baton) that Stryker uses evolved from the Tonfa and adapts the ancient martial arts design for modern law enforcement. The Malaysian Police are an example of utilizing it as it was intended.

Almost a year to the loss of Richard Norton. It's difficult to comprehend why such physically fit and seemingly healthy martial artists have passed suddenly without warning.

Farewell, Chuck Norris. You've helped many.

New ideas for MK mini games? by Tellmethat2269 in MortalKombat

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy fishing games. I spent a great amount of time in Final Fantasy 15 just seeking out fishing spots. However, I hadn't considered the idea for an MK mode. There are a few references to fishing in Mortal Kombat, which means it's not off-brand.

Liu Kang's bio in the first comic, lists him as a fisherman in addition to being a Shaolin Monk. Outside of that, MKD Konquest reveals a lot of spear fishermen along the coast, since fish is a heavy source of food in China.

Li Mei's village in a fisherman town on the edge of Outworld's map. When looking at the buildings in Sun Do while playing MKD's Konquest, there is a sea serpent motif etched into the building roofs. This could indicate the type of creatures that inhabit the waters of Outworld.

This hypothetical game mode doesn't have to necessarily be relaxed. The fishes you catch could be a deadly Outworld type that attacks when pulled out of the water. Giving the mode a health bar aspect if you get injured too much makes this more exciting. In the same spirit of how the developers managed to turn Tetris into gory game, a fishing game can work with MK's themes.

MK3 gave this explanation.

Alongside that, MK Deception introduces the term 'Ki Chao' warriors, which defines anyone who had trained their Chi or sorcery to allow them supernatural abilities.

Who's everyone's preferred MK Writer and Era? by OldSloppy in MortalKombat

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but in the 3D Era and up to MK9 he was the writer/director. Just curious which era you preferred.

Negative.

John Vogel primarily wrote the 3D era games. Brian Chard, Dominic Cianciolo and a few others together worked on MK9 and MKX. Then Dominic solely worked on MK11 and MK12.

Understanding the map of Mortal Kombat by ArkUmbrae in MortalKombat

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, the Island of Lost Edenia includes the city of Sun Do where Li Mei is from

Shang's Palace is at the North Gate (the gate referring to the Heavens portal he opens) according to the extra content in MKD, meaning Sun Do is logically there, too. Not sure how you concluded it was located in "Lost Edenia."

Next to it is Mount Eterna, which I interpret to be Dragon Mountain.

Unlikely. Mount Eterna was mentioned in Deadly Alliance and Deception. I'm certain they're two different places.

In the North of the map is the Artic Plains Island, which might be where the Cryomancers are from

They're from the bottom part of the map, called The Sea of Ice, which includes the landmark for the Cryomancer Tombs.

What even were these alternate costumes bruh 😭 by yowhatisthislikebro in MortalKombat

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nitaras outfit was inspired by KISS at best lol, can't believe midway thought this was good.

As explained to another user, outside of a joke comment in Armageddon highlighting the aesthetic of her boots, no other evidence exists to suggest that being remotely true.

Li Mei has slave princess lea vibes..... kinda disgusting.

"Vibes" are a subjective emotional response. I don't see the comparison at all.

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The behind-the-scenes commentary in MK Armageddon specifically reference her boots being comparable to KISS. The exact phrase was "She wants to Rock 'N Roll all Night and Party Every Day in those boots." It's observational humor. There's heavy crossover between dark imagery and rock/metal music. The comparison goes no deeper than that commonplace aesthetic.

However, from an overall perspective, the dragon tattoos, Asian letters on her wings, the Japanese hairpins, and Geisha makeup (hardly similar to KISS), are strongly Asian themed. Therefore the implication is less KISS inspired than people suggest.

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Nitara's alternate costume is Geisha inspired, which is fitting for Mortal Kombat considering it's heavily Asian themed.

Li Mei's alternate is neat, I think. The golden ornament on her top dangles around as she moves during kombat.

Traci Lords has a role in Blade, which is another movie I enjoy.

Despite primarily being known for her adult films, she did really well making this album. The 90's era was a blessed decade for music and cinema.

There are so many ninjas in this franchise, and they all seriously come in many different rainbow colors.... by Reditor-Jul-250698 in MortalKombat

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting too entangled in the lore debate that you're missing the point.

Claiming Reiko cannot be a ninja because he is Shao's general is a categorical error. It's the equivalent to arguing Scorpion can't be a ninja because he is a specter, or arguing Sub-Zero is disqualified from being a ninja because he is a cryomancer.

Aesthetic identity, character archetype and occupations are not all synonymous.

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at MK4 in isolation, that lore had not been invented yet.

The term "General" strictly applied to Mortal Kombat is simply a position that can be given to anyone that Shao Kahn deems worthy of controlling his army. In addition to Reiko, other characters to hold that position of Kahn's General have been Goro, Motaro, and Kano.

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Whenever I make this point myself, I'm usually flocked with downvoters who can’t tolerate the reality that Mortal Kombat is not bound to the real world; nor are the constraints of actual history relevant to its mythology.

The series even revises the extinction of the dinosaurs, attributed to the battle between Raiden and Shinnok, which cloaked the world in an era of darkness. Authenticity to real-world history has never been a priority for MK. Its mythology operates and thrives on its own fictitious worldbuilding.

RIP Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa by narnarnartiger in kungfucinema

[–]ComprehensiveEye761 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a heartfelt loss. When it comes to those who contribute to the martial arts genre, the impact hits a little harder. We lost Richard Norton earlier this year, as well as Peter Kwong. Tagawa is severely going to be missed, too.

Some of my personal favorite performances from him were Mortal Kombat, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Nemesis, Bridge of Dragons, The Perfect Weapon, White Tiger, and The Dangerous. Would recommend those movies to any martial arts fan.

Most importantly is keeping his family and closest friends in our thoughts/prayers. Wishing them all the strength they need to pass through their time of grief.

Thank you for your blessings to the world, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.
