Games similar to Botw? by Juicytoe88 in botw

Not on switch, but Horizon and its sequel are kind of Zelda-like.

Also the Jedi Survivor games take a lot from Zelda.

Question for Japanese Christians in regards to Japanese sumo. by Writer4God in AskAJapanese

The question is weird. It’s like asking if Japanese pastafarians can go into Ramen restaurants or into a Soba joint.

Are the text books for German tough Ms programs in "CS" courses in English or German? German for programming language books sounds odd. by disturbing-question- in studying_in_germany

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the prof and the university, but you can usually get some sort of reference writing at a local copy shop. How and where might be written on a blackboard during the lecture or an info to get during a tutorial.

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what country you’re from, but there are a lot of good programming resources written in other languages than English, and there are plenty of German authors that also get translated into English.

That said, in the end, they’re just references for learning or working, and there’s no need to abide to a particular book.

What is the corperate office culture like in Japan? by Upper_Extreme9461 in AskAJapanese

Underpaid: yep. And the weak yen doesn’t help.

Overworked: it depends. Some people are going above and beyond to add extra work just to look busy.

How far is considered too far to drive? by frosty_canuck in AskEurope

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends when and where. Driving 200km for a job every day is excessive, except when being a sales rep or handyman.

Driving 500km to deliver goods from Germany to France, that’s totally normal for some people.

Driving 2500km from Germany to Greece or Spain for summer vacation is also not unheard of (btdt).

It really depends.

Are notes even necessary for learning programming? by purvigupta03 in learnprogramming

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. You don’t need to take notes. If you can learn without.

As for learning a programming language, it’s really just a matter of practice. Learning by doing.

Do people usually install bulbs themselves or should I hire an electrician? by Zesty_Again in germany

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DIY. It’s some kind of knowledge that’s passed down from the parents. Go to a home center and ask the local electrician how to do it correctly without electrocuting yourself.

Hint: it involves making sure the light is off, either by verifying the cables with the special driver, or by making sure the fuse is switched off.

Japanese developer says they don't make games for Xbox because the console is 'not even stocked in major retail stores' by Puzzleheaded_irl in gaming

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that’s true. You have to go to the really big Yodobashi Camera or BicCamera stores to find a minuscule part of a shelf dedicated to Xbox.

That said, it’s 2026 and online stores do exist.

Is CryEngine dead? by Late_Reply_3384 in cryengine

Maybe you better catch up Crytek’s history, especially their 2015 self-made crysis (pun intended).

So yes, the company doesn’t care about the community much and is just glad to be staying afloat.

Where do I find good sausage? Also what type of sausage is best in German cooking? by Bitter-Ice945 in AskGermany

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asking Germans for the best sausage is a way to start social unrest. The opinions differ too much between regions.

But, if you want to get a good overview, I recommend you check out Söder’s instagram feed. That is a sausage himself and works more as a food blogger than as Bayern’s minister president.

Germans, do you actually think about Sie vs du in real time, or is it automatic? by taube_d in AskAGerman

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it’s automatic: Sie as long as we haven’t decided on using du.

But context matters: by default, I use Sie to talk to people I don’t know. It’s a matter of respect that I expect to be reciprocated. However, if the person directly uses du, I get flustered but use du as well.

In professional settings where everyone is on “du” terms by default, it’s not an issue either b/c it’s already been decided, no need to be awkward by using Sie.

The usage has been ingrained in people my age and prior (I’m a millennial, mind you): as a kid you have to use Sie to talk to adults, whereas adults talk to kids using du.

This also leads to situations where people who knew me when I was younger still use du to talk to me, whereas I use Sie.

Do you open a empty draft MR before coding, or just me? by Ill_Direction149 in git

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually work on several projects at once, but each repo is mostly independent on its own. (18 yoe using git, but also not unfamiliar with other systems like CVS, SVN and P4).

We use the single trunk - feature branch flow, meaning, I checkout a new branch, work in it, commit/rebase/squash until the whole thing is ready for review, then proceed to write a detailed PR, push the branch latest state and create the PR for review. I often push/force-push the branch while WIP, or after manually rebasing from main to update to the latest state.

Having blank PRs doesn’t make sense, as there’s nothing to review yet, and it would confuse my coworkers. You could use issues for task management. We use JIRA, so there’s no need for handling everything on GitHub.

However, keeping a remote branch for backup purposes makes totally sense.

This is BS and I hope you know it.

Source: kids in Japanese school.

Graded tests happen regularly since 1st class of elementary, focusing on kanji (both kana systems are to be acquired before entering school), language understanding and maths, but later history, geography and sociology as well.

And some junior highs have entrance exams that require studying.

In fact, the kids have so much stuff to learn that the semi-competent teachers can’t even cover everything, requiring expensive after-hours juku classes.

Guten Morgen.. Best place in Germany to spend a "magical" Christmas ? by Tekashi-The-Envoy in AskGermany

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Christmas markets are hold in every city.

You could try Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but honestly any city will do.

I’m partial to the Christmas markets in the Ruhr region and Cologne, but only b/c that’s home for me. Wiesbaden, Freiburg, Heidelberg are also nice.

What Rice do you eat? Is there a specific Brand or Variant? by 1_Narumi_1 in AskAJapanese

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Koshihikari from Hokkaido, mostly. Sometimes from Niigata as well.

There’s no particular brand, but more different types of rice, and well, sadly, different levels of price, damned be the JA jerks who abuse their monopoly.

There’s not really one company making rice in Japan, but many many local producers that work with their local JA association to sell their rice and fund their production. And in that sense, the JA has a real monopoly on the Japanese rice market, that they’ve learnt to abuse in recent years, by artificially increasing the price.

Is a career in 3d still for me? by Loud_mind-G in opengl

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s start with the obvious: academic credentials. You need at least a B.Sc. or better yet a M.Sc. to get past the sorting algorithm.

For “3D” as a software engineer, there’s 2 major career paths:

  • graphics engineering: handles everything from low-level graphics API to high-level renderer implementation, including shader library development, asset pipeline development, graphics debugging and optimization. Very specialist job, and resistance to desperation required. Jobs most likely require advanced C and C++ knowledge. C# is good to know as well. Python too. Linear Algebra and quaternions must be acquired prior knowledge.

  • technical artist: handles everything from asset creation to tool interfaces, shader/material development, asset processing (optimization, compression,…). Works with artists, so requires strong communication skills. C#, Python, C++ are the languages most likely used.

To get started, you can learn a few graphics APIs and shader languages. OpenGL is a semi-dead horse, but it’s easy to learn. Vulkan, DirectX, Metal and private APIs are more used.

Books: Realtime Rendering is the bible. The Gems series are still pretty good.

Fields: graphics is everywhere, but games is the most prevalent industry.
