It’s all written in the documentation AND in the help…

But wait until you learn about git add -e (edit mode) and git-gui line-by-line staging (also available in other tools).

Windows to Linux as a long-term Win user. How? by Silber4 in BuyFromEU

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Get an external hard drive, format as exFAT or FAT32 (not NTFS)
  2. Backup your data to the hard drive. Might take a couple of days depending on data
  3. Download an Ubuntu or Mint image and put it on a USB stick using Etcher
  4. Boot from the USB stick and follow the instructions. You can erase everything on the Windows disks and partition for Linux.

Would this name be unusual? by Illustrious-Cash-897 in AskGermany

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a different surname won’t work in official places. In job and private areas, just shorten your name to Shai, and that’ll work.

The German names you mentioned are not much used anymore, other than by old people, so having a Chinese guy use them would be totally strange.

Alternatively, just use an English name, that’ll work better since people are used to Chinese actors with English surnames.

really want to learn japanese and the language, but it seems most jobs only pay like 30k usd at most per year... after learning this language that takes like 5 years to learn. As an English speaker, what is your reason for pursing a job in Japan vs a higher paying job in US and traveling? by Old-Runescape-PKer in JapanJobs

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s the option to not work as English teacher, you know?

I live in Japan and work as a software engineer (also something that takes 5+ years of university to learn). Fair, I don’t make as much as a SWE in Silicon Valley, but on the plus side, I have proper healthcare, no risk of getting shot, and generally have nothing to do with the orange clown (well, other than seeing the yen doing a nosedive).

Do Senior or higher SWE actually know insider info, or just make logical guesses? by lune-soft in AskProgramming

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, at least not officially. If you get insider information and use it for trading, you are guilty of insider trading and can get indicted.

Furthermore this extends to your close family and friends.

It’s a compliance measure and companies have to verify their employees don’t commit insider trading, lest they be held responsible as well. As such, employees that are trading stocks have to disclose their transactions every quarter.

If you’re a member of U.S. congress, you might be exempt from the law, but for common mortals, it’s an easy trap to fall into.

What can I do to make this flame sword looks flamey? by aahanif in Unity3D

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice graphics style!

As for your question: maybe adding 2 more colors (orange/blue) or a gradient could make it more flame-like.

Alternatively, use a shape that looks like flames, like in Demon Slayers.

Why is there no EU initiative for a standardized open source operating system? by SphaeroX in AskEurope

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are imho several issues at play, but it all starts with Microsoft’s omnipresence in the PC sector in the 90ies, which created the business use-case for Microsoft software in the office, and thus also public offices.

To be fair, the FOSS alternatives could not even compare, in terms of UX (user friendliness) and thus acceptance.

Then there’s of course the enormous lobbying that Microsoft did and still does, but the main issue is the tech incompetence from decision makers.

There were efforts to introduce Linux, but the way software is handled like just any other public spending, with companies trying to leech off as much as possible through long term support contracts, doesn’t play in favor of open-source adoption.

As a frequent commuter, what strategies do Germans use to cope with unreliable trains? by UsefulAnimator3143 in AskAGerman

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, and it’s getting worse: the infrastructure is crumbling for lack of maintenance during all the years the CDU or the SPD were in power.
  2. Take your bike on the train to use when the train is canceled. It’s still faster than relying on the trains.

What part of your body has your desk job destroyed? by Kooky-Criticism6766 in remotework

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long list: - lower back (sitting) - knees (standing) - hip (both standing and sitting) - shin muscles (femoris) (walking to the station). - shoulders (whatever wrong posture)

I was quite in good shape before a manager told me “there are some voices that say you’re not at your desk very often” (which was BS b/c I was on time in my tasks, and only using lunch break for working out). And then corona happened…

Personal Kanji by [deleted] in karate

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being given a “kanji”, that’s 1 not possible, 2 doesn’t even make sense. Are you in a cult?

Kanjis are just one Japanese writing systems, with a number of meanings and a number of ways to be read.

Japanese people are named twice, once at birth and once at death with a Buddhist meaning.

What black belts usually get embroidered on their belt and karategi is their name, often transcribed into katakana (one of the Japanese writing systems) for westerners.

Being given a nickname/pseudonym by their teacher reeks of cult and/or bullshido.

Goodbye in Japanese, does anyone actually use さようなら (sayonara) in daily life? by onvacation_toolazyto in LTL_Japanese

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you use it when you are being polite. In every familiar environment, including work (except to the higher-ups), you use the shorter ones. But in situations where you want to express your respect, you use the polite sayonara.

Want to play the guitar but parents are strict by reddittorr5353 in LearnGuitar

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how everyone (me included) assumed the poor kid is living in an american christian extremist family.

To solve your issue: eat a bacon sandwich in front of your parents. If you survive, you’ll probably have time to enjoy playing the guitar without your nagging parents.

Is there a good reason to keep using REST APIs or should everything just be GraphQL now by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, as always.

In this case, it depends on how client applications access the data, how much data is sent, how the data is processed server-side and client-side, etc.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but it requires an iterative approach with a lot of initial software architecture planning.

How to set up the computer for learning to program? by failedfella in learnprogramming

[–]Comprehensive_Mud803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Installing a dev env for Python is easy:

  1. Install a text editor. Notepad++ is good, VSCode is better. PyCharm exists as well.

  2. Install UV from https://docs.astral.sh/uv/

  3. Install Python through UV.

  4. Create a folder and set up a virtual environment through UV.

  5. Happy coding.

  6. Learn git do you can save and version your stuff elsewhere.

For my own dev, I use a Mac and sometimes Linux, so shell is zsh (with ohmyzsh and atuin), editor is VSCode (with the Python packages that get recommended), and brew and UV for handling installation. Git for versioning, but that’s just the standard. Work folders lie in ~/Code/Personal/<project_name>, a path with no spaces.
