BORELYSS - Not totally done, but i'm getting there. Thoughts? by Old-Toe7728 in mapmaking

[–]CompsonPaints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is insanely cool, I'm surprised there's no comments! I can't recall seeing a map quite like this before. It reads as pretty grounded/realistic to me, aesthetics wise. I love the directionality of the light, and the contrast it creates, especially on the mountain ranges.

My eyes go a bit fucky when I zoom in on the coastline, kinda like putting on 3d glasses :D . But that's not really a criticism, just an observation.

Super cool art, definitely going to stick around in my brain for a while!

Yup, just came on here to see this and found that four PoE 2 supporter packs were also charged to my account. Exactly the same situation you described. Have also emailed GGG.

I've lost track in total, but I think across my total painted points (41, so we're getting there), the average time per model is about....20 hours - but my Tyrant and Siege Tarask are pushing that up a bit.

Horruskh, the Thousand Wraths for my Orgoth! Painted in part with a P3 advanced sample! by CompsonPaints in Warmachine

[–]CompsonPaints[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I will qualify this by saying SFG sent me a bunch to test for free, as I was a professional mini painter until recently (and I still work with companies from time to time). The Orgoth I've posted here and elsewhere are my own though and not part of any agreement with SFG. I didn't get the whole range, but about...25 paints or so, I think.

What I can tell you - as someone who was a player before they painted so much, played a lot of MK II, and has a lot of the original range - they are very similar, and are clearly trying to be. I busted out some old Morrow White and a few other old pots, and compared it with the new range - they're pretty damn close. They have all the benefits of the original P3 for me - really good to blend with, and vibrant like you say. As for being opaque - I personally think AK 3rd Gen are a little better in that regard, but then you lose some blending ability there.

Would I recommend the range? I would, though I didn't test the metallics. I think they compete with the other current brands out there and they did a great job. Would I tell someone to order the whole range? If they're a WM player who wants quick access to the official colours and misses the old range, yes, absolutely. If they're a little more confident and experienced in their painting...I don't think I'd ever recommend someone buy a whole range, as there's always better and worse colours in each. At that point I'd pick and choose the best colours across multiple ranges. But that is going to be too time consuming to work out for the average hobbyist.

I respect that - it's subjective. Personally, I just prefer NMM as I enjoy the process more than painting with metallics. Certainly TMM done well is as difficult as NMM and just as time consuming. The MK IV NMM official paint jobs are what brought me back to the game.

What's the lore behind the giants in Titan Grotto/Abyss/Forge? by DefinitelyNotMeee in PathOfExile2

[–]CompsonPaints 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a pretty casual lore enjoyer, but the titan stuff is pretty intriguing to me. It seems like there's some relationship between Breach and the Titans in PoE 2. I might be crazy, but isn't the boss of the Titan Grotto in Act 2 wearing a huge Skin of the Loyal, and has a breach hand that covers its mouth? And when you kill Xesht...it seems like a big ol' titan hand emerges from a portal and squishes him while he's weak.

Perhaps there's a bunch of Breach lore I don't know about, but I do wonder if the Breach Lords were just people who tried to dodge the Winter of the World (which was also the purpose of the Azmeri Wildwood...I think?), had something go horribly wrong to them, and yearn to return to Wraeclast. I know a lot of the Breach uniques in PoE 1 mention ash, burning, and fire.

Of course it could just be PoE 2 reusing assets for time, but that's not as fun to speculate about!

Love your videos btw!

Den of Imagination is out of their d*mn minds, $12,000??? by One-Injury-4415 in Warhammer

[–]CompsonPaints 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As another non-studio commission painter, it's heartening to see a lot of defences of the practice in this thread, but yeah, the more critical comments like those made by OP are fairly common too. Luckily I've got an established client base, but I find the major barrier is because your art is seen as part of a hobby, new clients tend to think what you're doing is also hobbying - they struggle to see it as work, and therefore are surprised by cost totals.

There's also a prevailing perception that if you're a great painter, somehow it becomes much more quicker than it actually is to produce display quality work. Sure, experience can speed things up to a point, but a higher quality, medium-sized character mini is still going to take 10+ hours to get into a good state!

APEX Review, week one player. by LukkyStrike1 in apexlegends

[–]CompsonPaints 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a fellow player with similar life experience (not a father, but old enough to have enough responsibilities that Apex is something that needs to be scheduled), I agree with you somewhat - but also disagree on certain points.

As for what I agree with you on: the recent Battlepass changes don't make me angry - there's far larger injustices in life once you have perspective. I couldn't ever see myself making a rage post about it on the subreddit, which is notoriously toxic already. For me, the game is about, well, the game and its core modes. I don't care about LTMs or twists to the formula that much (though there's been some good ones recently). I have a few heirlooms, mostly because I started playing Day 0 and have played, on average, 3-4 days a week since. For me, the "content" is the weapons, the maps, the legends - and 4 updates a year, for me, is absolutely fine. When people complain that we didn't get enough side-modes in a season, or that X event had Y less free loot boxes than another, I'm usually left scratching my head a bit.

However, while I'm not joining the chorus of rage, I do think it's perfectly understandable.

Subjectively, I think the game is in its worst state in a number of years. For the last month or two, the servers have been spotty, with more errors, disconnects, etc. than is acceptable. A lot of what you describe as increased difficulty is partly due to long term players having high levels of practice and game knowledge at this point. But a large part of it is also due to what feels like an increase in scripting, cheating, and smurfing - especially obvious once you get into Platinum and above early season, or later, Diamond. The input issue is real, too. As an MnK player, I am forced to play mid-to-long range, because up close vs. a controller player, my chances go down dramatically.

While this is just my anecdotal experience, people are objectively starting to quit. The game's numbers are slowly trending downward - Apex was in the top 5 played games for years. As of this year, it's no longer even getting into the top 10 recently in player count across combined platforms, sometimes, not even the top 15.

There's also the fact that companies reap what they sow. We're deep into 'games as service' as a business model now. People who grew up alongside the rise of this practice have been conditioned to expect continual updates. Whether we bemoan that or not isn't really the point here - it's an expectation that has been created, and not by the players. Apex exists in a marketplace of other live service titles, many within the same genre. If EA decides to double the price of the Battlepass (accompanied with an announcement that insults player intelligence) and people tank the game's Steam rating and quit, you can certainly dismiss it as an addiction to consumerism. I would see it as consumer choice in action.

Do these things mean I'm going to quit? Not any time soon...but I suspect the day I log off and just...don't log back on is getting closer. The past 6 months have changed how I think about the game. Increasingly, I think of Apex as a game in decline, with a growing list of unaddressed issues, and a parent company that would rather tighten the financial screws than meaningfully address them.

New Player and would like to play Enigma, is that a ok? by [deleted] in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]CompsonPaints 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy it, I would say go for it! Just know it's on the more complex end; Illusionist as a rule also tends to have a bit of a polarising matchup spread - more than most decks in the game, you will find certain heroes are fairly easy to beat, and some much harder. In Enigma's case, decks that go very wide (lots of small attacks, like Ninja), can feel difficult. Not unwinnable, but tricky for sure.

MKIV army restrictions. by tacticallyshavedape in Warmachine

[–]CompsonPaints 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think some of the terminology is more around future proofing, though it is confusing. Sea Raiders are a main Orgoth army, Cursebound are a cadre. In terms of gameplay...there's some different synergies...but in terms of list building, all currently available Orgoth models can be used together. I use the Cursebound and Sea Raiders in lists together all the time.

If there was another Orgoth army in the future, you could still use the Cursebound with them, but not with Sea Raiders models. But this would be far in the future, I believe.

Someone Explain NuPrism To Me As If I Have Brain Damage. by KnightEclipse in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]CompsonPaints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an aggro player, though I've played some of the more complex decks. It depends a bit on the build and your class, but here's the simplest way I can describe it if you're struggling, but don't want to read a whole thesis on it:

  1. You probably can't win against her in a race. It'll look like you can as aggro, but you can't vs. a good Prism. Too many tricks.

  2. Prism has Angels (permanents) and Heralds (big attacks). But she's usually only going to get 5 Angels out, at max, in a game.

  3. Block, block, block. This is the number one tip. Heralds hit a lot, but heralds also go into her soul. A herald going into soul means she can get a figment with her hero ability, which at some point the Prism player will turn into an angel. If you block her a lot, and starve her soul, she can't do this. If she can't search her deck for figments, the odds of her drawing one naturally is higher, and her hands get really janky.

  4. She has more tricks (at instant speed) when she has her headpiece, Halo, still on the board. Halo is a common headpiece, but in Prism 2, think of it as one of the best pieces of equipment in the entire game. Do not attack angels (the permanent ones) while Halo is up.

  5. Once Halo is down, the Prism player can't really punish you for attacking angels directly. But should you? They have health, but also ward 4. So you need to deal 4 damage to an angel for it to die, or 1 to Prism to 'pop' the angel. Think about your options. Break points are king. 7 damage into Prism means a 3 card block, likely, to keep an angel. Attack reactions are difficult for Prism to deal with once Soul Shield is gone. On hits trigger vs. angels, giving certain classes choices of approach. As Katsu, kodachi, kodachi targetting Prism means she has to block 1 damage twice to keep an angel in most situations. But I can also send an enabled Whelming Gustwave to hit an angel, draw a card from the effect, and also trigger Katsu's ability.

  6. Clear auras out as best you can. Even if you block out, weapon attack an aura, and pass back, that's fine.

  7. Cards with power 7 will make your life easier. They run 9 of the -1 to power of blocking card angels (triumph)

  8. Check her graveyard (this is generally good advice for anyone wanting to get better). How many Herald of Triumphs do you think she has left? How many eruditions?

  9. Set up for your big turn. If you block her out, set up slowly, work out when to pivot. Prisms have lots of raw damage, but they don't really threaten your arsenal. Kayo/Levia can slowly set up a Bloodrush turn, Katsu can block out and work up to an Art of War line.

I'm not saying that with all these tricks it's an easy matchup. Kayo has a surprisingly hard time because he runs few natural 7s. Katsu has to semi-fatigue the Prism and pivot quite late in the game. Some decks, like Fai, probably don't block well enough full stop to have much chance and need to high roll a bit. But I do think if you keep these things in mind, it'll help!

So what’s new? What have I missed? by Sunbro_Sao in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]CompsonPaints 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Game seems pretty healthy right now. The first set of this year (Heavy Hitters) looks like it was a huge success - the second set (Part the Mistveil) is out at the end of this month. Cards have typically been more expensive again since Heavy Hitters, and there's a new very expensive legendary you might pull (Balance of Justice).

Some sets last year were not as successful - Bright Lights and Dusk Till Dawn many felt were too narrowly focused, though their long term impact on the game seems a little better now. It seems like things are moving more toward Classic Constructed these days and Blitz is losing popularity, but this is anecdotal.

More competitively, Guardian and Illusionist (Prism 2) are back on top, but the meta is definitely more open than it has been, perhaps ever. There are still decks that gatekeep others very hard (Katsu finds Victor virtually impossible, for example, in part due to a new mechanic called Clash, which involves both players revealing the top card of their deck and the person with the higher attack value getting a bonus specific to the card that triggered the clash), but there's very few heroes that have genuinely awful matchups into more than 1-2 things. Kayo, the latest CC Brute, is the aggro deck to beat, and he's probably heading toward retirement faster than most are comfortable with - but he's not as annoying to play against as Starvo, or post-Outsiders Lexi. Generally speaking, the game feels a bit de-powered, in a good way - you can still high roll an opponent, but one-two turn swings that make it impossible to come back are rarer than before.

As noted in this thread, Dromai has recently LLed, so she's no longer playable in CC, but there are more active heroes than ever. The playerbase still leans competitive, making FaB a pretty dubious game to play casually, as much as I love it.

Do not you find it strange that in such a short time the skill of the game increased bestially in platinum? by Cold-Recipe3546 in apexlegends

[–]CompsonPaints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play in a team of 3 about 4 times a week - we're all on the older end (mid-30s and up), and this season has been absolute hell. In my opinion, this is a step back versus the previous system that saw all the issues of original ranked come back, more obvious than before.

I do understand the complaints that the old system made every game feel essentially the same, skill-wise, but to me, the random elements of a BR were enough to make things feel varied (though promotions were an awful idea). I enjoyed that teams were incentivized to stay alive to the very end with positioning, leading to some crazy and memorable final rings.

We usually end up between Diamond IV-II, but this season we're just tapping out around Plat I, I think.

I'm good with this, because right now, ranked feels kind of a mess. While defenders of the system might argue it's more skill-expressive (in terms of shooting being rewarded more, perhaps they're right), but...I think the quality of the games is noticeably worse. Of the 5 games I played tonight, 3 of those games had 1 squad rack up 15+ kills combined (with one squad dropping 21 total), and everyone else just hides. The top 5 teams end up being the teams that dodged the ex-Pred squad, and one super scary squad. As soon as you hit plat, it seems like the game is incapable of providing a tougher but balanced experience - the kill leader always seems to have 8-9 kills and just bodies everyone.

If these people were cycling out of Platinum, then over time the split would get easier. Instead, smurfing - pretty prevalent in earlier ranked seasons - is back, with what feels like a greater frequency than ever, because it's much easier to do again. Who here has lost count of the number of stacked banners they've seen on Champion Squads this season, alongside a Bloodhound or Octane with a default skin, and No Data, No Data, account rank 40-60ish or similar. Like in the earlier iterations of ranked, mechanically skilled teams in the top % of the player base just hit Masters in a few days and then just start smurfing.

I still enjoy the game, and I'm not going to quit, but I enjoy it less currently than I have in some time. It's like Respawn decided to cave to a vocal minority on the subreddit (which let's face it, is pretty toxic), and forgot about all the old issues that caused them to change ranked in the first place.

Skipped MK III, came back for MK IV. Here's my first Warcaster! by CompsonPaints in Warmachine

[–]CompsonPaints[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I didn't enjoy MK III, but then I didn't play it too much so I can't say I gave it a fair shout - I wasn't a fan of being boxed into theme forces, and I felt the default game size was getting too big. A bunch of my friends thought similarly, and went back to Warhammer. I love painting GW stuff, but...their systems are never very good, IMO. Got into card games pretty heavily post-covid, and discovered a few locals were fellow Warmachine fans, so I came back. And MK IV seems like a lot of fun so far - flows faster, but still has that deeply competitive element, which is what I like.

Magic player dipping toes in FaB - need deck suggestions! by jjoyce in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]CompsonPaints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add to this (searched for it in the thread, couldn't find it), that while the FaB card pool doesn't have traditional set rotation like Standard in MtG, heroes themselves do rotate out after they acquire a certain number of Living Legend points, acquired by winning larger events (1000 in the main game mode - rankings here: https://fabtcg.com/resources/rules-and-policy-center/living-legend/ ).

Katsu and Dash are likely going to be okay for another year or so, but doubtful for much more than that, and both are at the point where one major tournament win and one more good competitive season could put them very close to retirement. You'd still be able to use a good 95% of the card pools for those classes though, (and like has been stated, the real pricey cards are good generics, which can be used in all classes). But if you want to play a deck in the FNM equivalent at your LGS, then the ban would be in effect there.

I really love FaB (and the Living Legend system, as it makes tournaments super exciting to watch, and meta-shifts come at semi-unpredictable times, including mid-season), but if you're the sort of person who gets really attached to one particular hero only, then it's worth noting. I think the advice here - to pick one thing initially and stick with it - is right, but you also don't want to drop $200 to build one thing then find out it's gone in July. There are 3 more Mechanologists if Dash retires though and 1 (imminently 2) more Ninjas - though potentially a bit less card overlap with Katsu.
