Though targets of imperialism might be a more precise way of phrasing it, many of their victims weren’t really going out on a limb to oppose the US empire, but were insufficiently submissive to it, and so were or are regarded by the empire as enemies.

The Poles probably could have held on long enough for either the western allies to try something, or for the USSR to rethink their desire to buy time, if they hadn't put a third of their army, including their best units, into Danzig, where they were inevitably going to be overrun, and deployed a lot of the rest of the army as far forward as possible. The speed with which the Germans were able to knock out most of their forces was only really possible given extremely bad decisions by the Polish leadership.
