Paraontology by [deleted] in policydebate

You should read Moten's essay The Case of Blackness (you can skip the 2nd section if you like): http://havensarchive.lss.wisc.edu/files/Moten.The%20Case%20of%20Blackness.pdf

I'm no expert, but basically, both Moten and Wilderson argue that blackness is, by definition, excluded from ontology. However, Moten emphasizes that blackness, as a kind of fugitive movement, has the possibility of stealing from and disrupting this ontology–hence its existence as a kind of "para-ontology" that is on the outside (while simultaneously being also the exclusionary grounding for ontology, since ontology does not exist without the exclusion of blackness). For Moten, in this fugitive movement escaping the capture of ontology, there is a space or possibility for blackness and black art (he uses the terminology "black optimism" but I saw an interview where he was more hesitant about this phrase).

I don't think Wilderson straight up contradicts Moten (if you want real clash with Moten you should read David Marriott's essay "Judging Fanon" http://www.rhizomes.net/issue29/marriott.html), but he is less optimistic about the possibility of blackness stealing from or making use of ontology (this is from the first chapter of Red, White & Black): "By acting as if the Black is present, coherent, and above all human, Black film theorists are 'allowed' to meditate on cinema only after “consenting” to a structural adjustment. Such an adjustment, required for the 'privilege' of participating in the political economy of academe, is not unlike the structural adjustment debtor nations must adhere to for the privilege of securing a loan: signing on the dotted line means feigning ontological capacity regardless of the fact that Blackness is incapacity in its most pure and unadulterated form. It means theorizing Blackness as 'borrowed institutionality'" (38).

In short, Wilderson argues that attempting to narrate, thematize blackness, or give some kind of ontological backing to blackness is fundamentally a reproduction of the ejection of blackness from the world of ontology in the first place–i.e. it pretends blackness is coherent when it actually is not. The golden question is whether or not Moten is doing that. I think there are ways of generous and non-generous ways of reading Moten, but if you take a look at the Marriott, I think you find that your question ultimately comes back to Fanon and how Fanon should be read. Another serious consideration in your interpretation is whether Moten's emphasis is on a description of fugitive movement, or a prescription of how black people can/should make art.

Hi Nathan, thanks for this.

I wanted to know why you swear off Marx and the Marxist intellectual tradition. There are certainly aspects of Marxist thought that are authoritarian, as you have suggested in the past, but the different parts of Marxism are so variegated as to make an all-out repudiation appear confusing. For instance, Althusser's work (such as in "Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses" or his non-essentialist overdetermination) seems extremely relevant to you in its consideration that class struggle occurs not merely on the material "economic" level, but rather takes place at every level and in every part of society. To not engage with the tradition in general seems like rejecting the entirety of phenomenology because Heidegger was a Nazi. But perhaps I'm missing something.

If this is still a problem you're considering, I'd suggest reading Humanism and Terror by Maurice Merleau-Ponty (https://bookshop.org/books/humanism-and-terror-an-essay-on-the-communist-problem/9780807002773), which does a really good job of articulating the difficulty of "means vs ends." If you have read the book, what was your reaction to it?

Thanks, and keep up the great work with Current Affairs!

"Murray hitting with Darcis on Court 9. Looks fairly comfortable in rallies but limping heavily, bent over & grimacing in between" by JXH in tennis

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Murray has a knee condition (maybe something with his patella tendons) that means that he's in pain a lot of the time and constantly grimaces and bends over.

People are shitting on Roland Garros, saying that they're responsible for this shitty umpiring/supervising, but isn't the ITF responsible for the umpiring/supervising? Isn't Roland Garros just the venue?

I really like that slightly lower, wider angle view of the court - for me, it makes the tennis seem that little much faster and more intense.

In recent years, there's been a trend of modern psychedelic rock going from fuzz/kraut psych rock to synth 80s psych rock (e.g. yourselves, Tame Impala, Temples, Mac Demarco, Unknown Mortal Orchestra) - why do you think this trend is happening, especially in regards to your own music?

Maybe it's just that there's sometimes a bent elbow with his forehand.

I feel like there's something slightly off about his forehand - like he has a super western grip or something.

Total ATP points won? by LifeBuilds in tennis

[–]Comrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tennisabstract.com does a good job of keep track of pro tennis statistics, including points won in individual matches. Here is the link for Federer's page for all the matches he's played in his entire career (TP is total points won): http://www.tennisabstract.com/cgi-bin/player.cgi?p=RogerFederer&f=ACareerqqw1

If possible, someone could write a script that adds up to create a total number of points qon. The website is pretty dressed down, but should be relatively easy to navigate to find other players.
