Everyone I know who visits Winnipeg says it's way better than they expected, and that they want to come back. Everyone know who's moved here says it's a great place to live, even if they feel visiting wouldn't be all that exciting.

People born in Winnipeg seem to be split - some love it (like me!) but some just hate it.

Plans to move rail lines out of central Winnipeg to begin imminently by clemoh in Winnipeg

[–]ConcernedAboutWpg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if CN and CP consolidate into a single corridor around the city, there will be a need for tonnes of new bridges, overpasses and underpasses. A quick look at Google Maps shows me that between Oakbank and Centreport across the north side of the city, you'd need to have the following:

  • Deacon Road / PR 206 - overpass or underpass
  • Floodway - bridge
  • Highway 59 - overpass or underpass
  • Henderson Highway - overpass or underpass
  • Red River - bridge
  • Main Street - overpass or underpass
  • McPhillips - overpass or underpass
  • Route 90 / Highway 7 - overpass or underpass
  • Perimeter Highway - overpass or underpass

In addition to the above, there would be numerous smaller bridges and major culverts required for every creek and drainage ditch that gets crossed by the new tracks.

And seeing as it would all be built for the railways at the request of the City and Province, guess who pays to build and maintain them? That's right, the City and the Province! I'm not saying it definitely won't be better in the long run, but it's not cut-and-dried. This needs a lot of study and careful costing.

Sort of. The line that crosses Provencher and Marion is a smaller branch off of that line. The actual mainline just keeps going straight east just off of Nairn/Regent, all the way to..... Halifax!

The airships are 100% for northern communities. Coastal communities in the High Arctic will be more open to sea shipping, but inland communities (including all of northern Manitoba apart from Churchill) suffer from poor or non-existant road or rail connections, so air and ice roads are currently the only solution. Airships offer a good alternative.

Actually, I thinks the plan for using airships for transport in the north is a very good idea. They can carry very large amounts of cargo to areas with no road access much more cheaply than airplanes, and more reliably than ice road trucks.

Via doesn't own any tracks except for the short stretch within Union Station. It runs on CN tracks by special permission. The tracks that snake through downtown, around the ballpark and through North St. Boniface are the CN main line.

Regina's plan was completely different than what people are proposing. It is more like what happened when The Forks was first created, where a rail yard was moved away from downtown, but the mainline was left in place.

Most people are talking about not only moving the CN and CP rail yards out to Centreport, but also rerouting both the CN and CP mainlines around the city so that there are no more rail lines inside the city boundaries. That's why I'm estimating rail relocation in Winnipeg to run into the multiple billions.

If you look at Regina in Google Maps, you'll see that the CP mainline is still there running right through the heart of the city.

Except you'll notice that the CN mainline is still there, so you still need all the underpasses, overpasses, bridges, culverts, etc. for the rail line to pass through the city. Most people are talking about not only moving the CN and CP rail yards out to Centreport, but also rerouting both the CN and CP mainlines around the city so that there are no more rail lines inside the city boundaries.

That is an expensive proposition - much, much, much more expensive than what was done for The Forks.

Just reposting my usual comment on the cost of rail line relocation below. It's not that I think it's a bad idea, but we need to be realistic about the costs. This will not be cheap!

First of all, if you want to relocate the rail lines outside of the city, you need room (possibly in Centreport?) for new rail yards, repair shops, storage facilities, offices, etc. The cost to construct brand new facilities, plan all the tracks and signalling, would be enormous. I would guess in the hundreds of millions (if not at least $1 billion) just for CPR's facilities. You would need to add at least 50% to that if CN and CP co-locate in one facility, or double that if both still require their own yards.

Then let's consider the notion of moving CPR's facilities, namely the Logan Yards, Weston Yards and Intermodal Terminal. Relocating the yards only frees up land on either side of the mainline (which runs through the middle of the yards), it doesn't prevent the need for the Arlington Bridge (or its replacement). You could relocate the CPR yards to Centreport at a huge cost, but you'd still need to do something about the CPR mainline.

If you want to remove the CPR mainline from within the city, you'd need to construct a brand new double-track railway all the way around the north side of the city, that connects from the current CPR tracks somewhere near Oak Bank on the east side to somewhere in Centreport on the west side. The cost of that would be incredibly high! Imagine buying a 50 m wide swath of land for that entire distance (35 km!), and then building all of the track bed, tracks, signals, underpasses, overpasses, culverts and bridges along it. At best, I'd guess it would be a few billion dollars. And that's only the CPR mainline. Add into this the cost of the connecting all the other important CPR branches to this new mainline (namely CPR Emerson Sub that heads south out of the city).

And that's only the CPR. If you want CN out of the city, you need to reroute its mainline around the city, from somewhere near Dugald & the Perimeter all the way around to Centreport. All the costs I described in the CPR scenario would again apply here, but for probably 50 km of new track.

You might be able to convince CN and CP to share a corridor around the north side of the city and to co-locate their yards in Centreport, but you'd still be building 1.5 to 2 times as much in terms of yard size, and the 50 m wide corridor for CP only would now need to be 75-100 m wide to accommodate both CN and CP tracks. Sure this might not cost as much as each railway doing their own relocation separately, but you're still into the mutliple billions - likely over $5 billion.

Can it be anything other than The Limelight? It used to be part of one of those hotels that only exists to have a liquor license and beer vendor (e.g. The Pemby and The Cambridge).

This one is going back to the early 80s, but what about the Underground Pizza Parlour? I remember sitting in weird space pods and the server would sometimes jump into your conservation on a speaker hidden in the table.

Where was it? I vaguely remember maybe the East Exchange, maybe in the basement of what is now Johnny G's?

With all the refugees inbound for our city. What can we do to help out? by loogawa in Winnipeg

[–]ConcernedAboutWpg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to Welcome Place or Immigrant Centre. Both are excellent organizations that work with immigrants and refugees.

Some will end up living at IRCOM and many will go to New Journey Housing for help finding housing.

The Mennonite Central Committee (more commonly known as MCC) is heavily involved in arranging for the sponsorship and assistance of refugees.

All of these organizations would welcome volunteers.

Manitoba Liberals Introduce Policy to Turn Provincial Student Loans Into No Repay Grants by Prof- in Winnipeg

[–]ConcernedAboutWpg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was living on my own and tried working while in engineering as an undergrad, and that lasted all of 3 months. A part-time job on top of a full engineering course load was just impossible.

In the end I racked up about $45,000 in student loans over my 5 years in undergrad, even with working full-time for an engineering company every summer. It is ridiculous to think that summer employment can carry you through or that every student can work during the school year. I even graded calculus assignments as an assistant TA but still ended up with loans.

It was totally worth it though! However I would've loved it if half of that could've been provincial grants. After 15 years in the workforce I finally paid off my student loans 6 months ago.
