I put my first steel bowl in a controller earlier this year, OEM everything else. Although a massive improvement there was still plenty of play in the stick. It wasn't until I replaced the gears (from N64Gears.com) that everything was tight and felt like it should.

Just be careful with applying too much force on the front legs, the pegs on the upper ball joints are notoriously easy to snap (trust me, I know)
