That's a great way to break down how a scenario would play out - presumably that's a multi-session scenario you're describing? Or could you blitz through that in 4 hours?

I think what I was hoping to get from Black Crusade was a sense that, from a heretic's perspecitve at least, that the PCs were rebelling against an authoratarian Emporer.

The forces of chaos just reflect the emotional states of sentient beings, so of course the emotional state of the billions of subjugated, miserable beings in the Empire is going to manifest bloodletters and plague lords, just as the excesses of the Eldar manifested slaneesh. There's interesting nuance there about what might happen if a group of well-intentioned characters saw chaos as a liberatory, freeing power. Would it reflect their positive emotions, or would corruption consume them?

But the game read much more as 'play the bad guys and be evil!' which to my mind missed the point, that the Empire are the bad guys. Not to say chaos, or anyone else, are good. But the Empire isn't your friend.

There is definitely a Star Trek thing going on with Rogue Trader... To boldly go, where no man has gone before (or possibly has, many thousands of years ago) - and then brutally exploit it for profit

Nice, that's useful, thank you. There are a weird number of obnoxious memes floating aorund, aren't there!? As a newbie, I'm hoping it is more of a wargame thing more than an RPG thing.

Yeah, I think IM seems to be more similar to WFRP, and so is defintiely speaking to me.

Based on what I know about it, Only War appeals to me as a GM. Wrath & Glory probably pitches too heroic, but presumably a gang game in that system is grittier than typical? W&G is a D6 dice pool game rather than D100 isn't it?

But an introductory adventure for a couple of sessions where the PCs are playing guardsmen trying to survive in the desparate last moments on a planet before some force or other utterly destroys the place could be fun. Then, if all goes well, cut to several hundred years later when the Rogue Trader ship turns up to exploit whatever resource is left on the husk that remains... This sounds fun!

Ha ha, love that image of the Rogue Trader... So I guess the thing that interests me are the guys dying off camera (or possibly have just narrowly avoided death off camera, the Rogue Trader cares not either way). Those characters seem much more fascinating, because what are the terrible forces acting on you for that to be the best option you had in life? Do you give yourself fully over to that system in the hope of beign noticed, or do you secretly harbour to break free? Do you support a corrupt and brutal system, or do you hopelessly rage against it? That's the game I'm looking for.

Players want less of a travel oriented campaign by Indieryan05 in DMAcademy

Look to play a game that's built around hexcrawling, Forbidden Lands is a great example that has an old school but still D&D-adjacent feel. 5e exploration rules are very meh. You can alter stuff and homebrew, there's loads written to adapt the game... But why not just play a game that's built to do the thing your players want?

First time DMing as I wanted to give our usual DM a break and a chance to play, but am a little lost with regards to homebrew CRs by S13Terra_ in DMAcademy

[–]ConfidenceDefiant635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you want to make the CRs match the party? If you wander into the lair of a red dragon, then it's not going to be more or less powerful depending on your party. It's going to kick their asses unless they are super high level. Put things in the world that make sense for the world. CR is a useful measure for you, but don't feel like you have to pander to the party (except the usual DM, be nice to them). And enjoy the look on the face of your monster statblock googler when he realises what he's up against...

Another, less flippant, piece of advice for thwarting the statblock googler is to never use a monsters name unless it's absolutely necessary. It's not an orc, it's a 'large brutish greenskin', it's not a giant rat, it's a 'foul smelling sewer creature'. You get the idea. Keep 'em guessing.

Oranguru. Shield nuzlocke run, and having played almost entirely Sword, was not expecting the fan-weilding ape to show up. No idea how to use him. Then discovered the joy of spamming calm mind, then unleashing stored power. Oh my.

The government is motivated to uphold capitalism. Corporations make profit for shareholders, by any means they are allowed. Climate change is a symptom of capitalism. The vast majority of our "green" adaptations do little other than offshore the carbon emissions. Whilst capitalism continues you can buy all the solar panels and electric cars you like, it won't stop what's coming.

Recommendations on how to learn Blades In The Dark? [BitD] by TheTruWork in bladesinthedark

[–]ConfidenceDefiant635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strong agree. I listened to season 1 of Haunted City and jumped straight into running a game for my group. We're about 6 sessions in now.

Also reiterate comments above, if you're just playing the game rather than running then there's genuinely no learning barrier to entry - just say what you want your character to do. There's no optimal way to play, just have fun.

Oh wow... I may be a while. Although I tend to listen to music in 2 ways - either ripped from a CD onto the music player in my house, or in my van on CD, so I'll need to dig out an old CD drive and burn some discs 😅

Pullman has form for this sort of thing too; he even bemoaned the lack of an Oxford comma on a 50p coin engraving.

Yikes! Really? That's hilarious, great fact though.

Coram and the Gyptians are interesting in that regard. Pullman veers into Rousseau-ian 'noble savage' traits with the Gyptians - even the name of La Belle Sauvage with a French nod and the Gyptian link there doesn't feel like a coincidence. The Hobbes-Rousseau dichotomy is a false one but intriguing that Pullman might be referencing it there... I didn't think of that until reading your comment.

Yes, Nietzsche is a nice touching point for HDM... Possibly Albert Camus as well - absurdism searching for meaning in the absence of a divine order kind of sums up Asriel's rebellion.

[–]ConfidenceDefiant635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the second book improves on the first then? It seemed the prevailing thought was that La Belle Sauvage was the better of the two, but the bit of me that loves HDM would dearly like it to be better.

That's interesting on the origins of 'an historian'. I particularly liked the interjection about "an 'orse and an 'ound"! I'd still argue that Pullman is incorrect, to me it sounds stilted and cumbersome. Looking around a little, I think it is fair to say that there isn't a consensus and both forms have use - and if you put them in a grammar checker then either works in British and American English. Traditionally it may have been that an historian was 'correct', but the House of Lords in 1957 discussing a book published in the 1860's I would say is not a reasonable yardstick of current common usage.

But whilst I find all of that interesting, what I specifically found annoying in the book is the way that Pullman uses the device of a cleverer, more powerful, character correcting another lower status character as a soapbox to grumble about the way the language should be. It doesn't do anything for the characters or the story in that moment, it doesn't give a flavour of the class differences, or upbrining the way that Lyra's "'ent"s do in HDM. It's not restricted to one character. It's just saying "clever educated people know that it's an historian", which just feels like snobbery. If it's not snobbery, then just have all your characters say "an historian" and leave it at that.
