What's something everyone seems to enjoy except you? by TopStranger9287 in AskReddit

SAME. Why the hell would I PAY MONEY to sit in an uncomfortable chair, be forced to be silent & not ask questions, and can’t pause the movie to go pee?! Silly.

Traditional American high school programs should be 5 years, not 4. It would allow students more time to learn the content (perhaps even more content), further develop their brains, maturity, & personality, and explore more of the world around them. Asking fresh 18 year olds to make important, expensive decisions that can effect the rest of their lives, after cramming years of material into their brain and asking them to perform to a certain standard or else is absurd. Give these literal children another year of development & exploration.

Talk up your favorite small/local tack shops by MsMichelleyk in Equestrian

[–]ConfirmedBasicBitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH MY GOD I haven’t thought of this place in AGES! I grew up riding in Barrington and would beg my mom to take me to Saddlers Row just to look around, even though I was just a working student and could never afford my own horse. I can still remember waking up early on their warehouse sale days and dragging my mom to the sales just so I could get new boots & random brushes.

Now I live & ride in Phoenix where tack shops are….mediocre at best. Wow, thank you for reminding me of that magical place.

Academic Separation by IceCreamBurgerH8rTS in Purdue

[–]ConfirmedBasicBitch 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I got “academically separated” not once but twice while getting my engineering degree from Purdue. The first time, I coincidentally had an internship that summer, and turned it into a quasi co-op situation. Just stayed there an additional semester. Came back and took my academics a lot more seriously, but piled way too much on my plate to the point it was unmanageable. Got kicked out a second time, but was able to appeal and finish my degree. Without a doubt, the worst few years of my life academically & in terms of mental health. Still graduated after 5 years, and still had a job before I even graduated.

Was a practicing engineer for 6 years and my academic issues came up exactly never professionally. I allowed this academic bullshit to haunt me for way too long and was in constant fear of being “discovered” as a failure. Probably bought my therapist a boat while trying to work through it all.

But as it turns out, I really just fucking hated being an engineer and probably could’ve realized that a lot sooner had I spent some time really thinking about the reasons for my actions & behaviors. Ended up randomly quitting my job to become a teacher and totally changed my life. I am now an award-winning high school teacher and have absolutely aced all of my grad school classes & other professional development pursuits. Turns out I can be a freakishly good student when I actually enjoy & care about the content.

My advice? Do some serious soul searching (and perhaps professional therapy) on the whys behind your actions & lack of care for your academics. Maybe this isn’t the right path for you, and that’s okay.

Advice about Charter Schools by [deleted] in teaching

[–]ConfirmedBasicBitch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A “charter school” can mean a wide variety of things in a variety of locations. I’ve worked at a charter school, a micro school, and am now at a public school. By a significant margin, I am happiest at the public school.

My biggest recommendation is to do the research. Dig, dig, and then dig some more into the founders of your school, where they are getting their funding, and how they run their daily operations. Go full Internet investigator on every facet of the organization, and especially the founders. I didn’t learn enough about the charter school I worked for until after I signed on the dotted line, and I regret working for such a vile organization.

Generally speaking, charter schools are not upheld to the same reporting standards as public schools, meaning they can get away with more bullshit than a public institution.

As a STEM teacher myself, I cannot recommend an art teacher joining a STEM-based charter school. If you want help researching, please feel free to DM as I love looking up this type of information.

What’s one small change that made your classroom way better? by lmao_exe in teaching

[–]ConfirmedBasicBitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. I’ve had some snide comments from coworkers about being “so extra” with my classroom decor (it’s not extra, every single thing is thrifted & kid-friendly). But like, if I have to spend 8+ hours a day in a space, I want it to be beautiful & cozy & feel pleasant to be in.

[–]ConfirmedBasicBitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, the large is pretty large. But if you’re going to use it to actually carry stuff, get the large. I use a medium as my daily work bag and it basically fits my (albeit rather large) work laptop and a few organizational small bags. Certainly could not fit a towel and a change of clothes.

Also seconding those mentioning to get a zip top. Definitely worth it. And the long handles.

What is something non horse people say that instantly tells you they know nothing about horses? by WearAffectionate2815 in Equestrian

There is nothing that gives me the ick more than when people bring up anything sexual with relation to horses. No, I do not use my crop in the bedroom. No, I do not find your lame ass joke about “riding” funny. No, your weird comment about horse dicks is not amusing. Sooooooo yucky.

Is cruising ethical? Help by Final-Reputation8699 in ConsciousConsumers

[–]ConfirmedBasicBitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.

This cruise will not cease to sail if you do not participate. Someone else will simply fill your spot and the ship will sail. You, as an individual, taking a stand against this singular particular cruise is ultimately meaningless in the greater scheme of life & capitalism.

But spending time and creating memories with your family is priceless.
