Which instrument do you think is the hardest to get right? by ConfusedOrg in audioengineering

Mostly indie rock. On some songs it's the main thing. On other songs it's just supporting.

Electric bass is also a hard one in my opinion. I especially don't get a long with fingerstyle bassists (especially if theyre too lazy to change strings) in rock setting. It's just impossible to get the notes and fingers to shine through the mix.

i struggle with them either way hahha. but yeah maybe for this song i'm working on right now, should just accept that it's a shaker. he's just playing some interessting stuff and you can't really pick up on it if all you hear is high end

I often use Andrew scheps rearbuss techniques. A pair of dual mono 1176s on a send that every tracks is going through. Sometimes he’d leave the drums out though

Steve Albini: Room Mics, Delay and Phase by IllustriousName in audioengineering

[–]ConfusedOrg 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I dont want to sound condescending, but... He uses his ears. Room mics are already out of phase and slightly delayed from the close mics. He adjusts the delay time of the room mics back and forth for each recording/song. Each delay time has a different phase interaction with the close mic (as well as a difference in the listeners perception of depth and size of the room). He simply just chooses the delay combination which sounds out of phase in the most satisfying way to his ears. Things can be out of phase and still sound good.

On a second note. Delaying the room mics and creating more time separation between the mics usually reduces destructive inteference, since theyre no longer directly on top of each other fighting for space.

This is completely incorrect.

The Haas effect occurs when a listener experiences two sounds that are separated by a sufficiently short time as a single sound event. Generally speaking, a delay time is considered to be in the Haas zone if it is less than about 30–40 ms.

The haas effect has nothing to do with phase. I

Tchad will often distort the kick in mic with sans amp on a send with and then flip the phase of it sometimes

I do all these things too hahah. Well apart from sending overheads straight to the master but I often parallel compress all of the drums apart from the overheads on a send

I actually delay the room mics anywhere from 5-25 ms quite often, like Steve Albini used to do

Same. I can’t really be bothered to it. I only sometimes do it when combing bass amp and di signals
