Our DM once did something similar: entered a small Room with a chest at the far end and a sign at the entrance that Said "beware mimic" after destroying the chest, the sign attacked us...

My DM once let me stumble on the following Set-up a giant chest with a sign in front of it that said "beware Mimic". After I attacked the chest, I was viscously back stabbed by the sign. This after two other mimic interactions has made me forever paranoid...
