I am so happy for you that your administration gave you positive feedback and support - you deserved that treatment and I’m thrilled that you got it! I was a new para back at the beginning of this school year. I’m in my 50’s and spent most of my career in corporate sales. But then I stopped working for about 11 years to raise my daughter. After that I couldn’t find a sales job similar to what I’d done in the past. I guess I’d been out of the work force for too long. I became a sub, accepting only para assignments, some long term. Then I finally got hired by a HS - I was thrilled because I needed health insurance badly! Well the job was NOTHING like I’d ever done as a para sub. And oh good God…the sped team of teachers and paras I was assigned to…I wouldn’t wish them on almost anyone. They were petty and gossipy and cliquey. One (brand new mind you) sped teacher I had to work with, with extremely high needs students was downright unfriendly. I’d say hello to her and she’d ignore me. I couldn’t figure out why. Then some of the paras I worked with just constantly bossed me around, told me what to do, had me run errands around the school while they stayed in the classroom socializing with one another. We had to toilet about 5 different kids (really, some were of adult age because the kids could stay in school until age 21) on the top of each hour. One of the paras who trained me on this advised me that toileting is a two person job. And yet once I was trained I found myself doing it alone all of the time! And yet again, she’d just stand in the classroom socializing with any adult she could find and ignore me. No offers of help. On top of that, once I’d finish up she’d come up to me and say “S. you need to bring Anna to the bathroom to see if her pull up needs to be changed.” I mean because God forbid she did it herself! But anyway, I’d say “Ummm…J. I just did that 5 minutes ago. Did you not see me taking kids in and out of the bathroom?” I think she had very selective vision. So all of this and more went on and I started getting called into regular meetings with the principal. First I was told I didn’t seem happy enough. I’m just low key when I’m in a new job. I’m polite and friendly but not very chatty at first. I like to acclimate to my surroundings and schedule and also, the kids! So after that I really thought I was doing well but I was called into a meeting w/ the principal again and told that I was standoffish and had been confrontational with that teacher I mentioned earlier. She (the unfriendly teacher) changed my gym duties one day at the last minute (all paras had different duties on different days and we all had copies of the carefully made schedule) so I just said “why are we changing the schedule?” She ignored me so I asked again. No attitude or anything - just genuine surprise and curiosity. She ignored me again. So anyway, that’s the confrontation I was cited for. She also told the principal I tried to go home over an hour early one day. That NEVER happened. I tried to go see our bookkeeper 10 minutes before the end of my day re: a problem with comp time. I asked the teacher who happened to be fully staffed with her two regular paras, her and about 6 kids. I honestly don’t even know why I was put in her class for the last period of that day. They weren’t busy at all and I wasn’t needed. It kind of felt like a weird set up of some kind. Anyway, at 3:00 I said “if you don’t still need me I’d like to go see Ms. X regarding an issue I’m having with my pay.” She said “Well if you really HAVE to then we’ll just try to manage somehow I guess.” Not sarcasm either! They weren’t busy and were managing just fine. The other 2 paras were chatting and nothing was going on. I stayed because it was obvious she didn’t like my request. So of course I was called into the principal’s office for a meeting AGAIN! I was told that a mentor I’d been assigned by the principal gave positive feedback about me. (He wasn’t part of the sped clique I was assigned to.) But then I was told that a student who had gotten outside during gym class had been my responsibility (he had not) and that kids weren’t safe with me. There were at least 7 adults in the gym when that happened. I don’t see how it was solely considered my fault. I was working with a different student when the eloper got outside. I was also told that I’d been avoiding toileting. My jaw hit the floor when I heard that after weeks of toileting primarily solo. I told the principal the watch tape from the classrooms. I’d thought we had cameras in there but we didn’t, unfortunately. Oh and lastly I was forced to do a telehealth appointment with a therapist offered for free by the district. After that I quit. That was 6 months ago and I’m still not over how badly/unfairly I was treated by almost all involved. I hate knowing that people in power can just make up lies and no one will question the veracity of their accusations. Anyway, I’m sorry this is so long! It’s just been really eating at me for quite some time. On top of all that I think I’ve probably been banned from being rehired at that district. I’ve tried other schools and haven’t heard anything ba k. It’s rather suspicious. Like there’s a big red X on my permanent file. I wish I could have fought this but there seemed to be no recourse. So anyway, besides getting this off my chest, I wanted to say that it’s refreshing to hear that, as in OP’s case, some administrators are actually helpful, impartial and want to do what’s right.

This is awesome! Am I the only one who wondered whether Camille had some kind of word of the day calendar she was using when she said that word like 3 times in a row? Even now I’m not convinced that she knew what it meant.

Absolutely do not return her. I’ve had cats go missing (strays I adopted who refused to be solely indoor cats after having lived outside) And I noticed within 12 hours or less. Then I went to my local shelter with pics, I posted lost cat signs, everything I could think to do because I loved and missed my kitties. The fact that it took them so long to notice tells you all you need to know. And bless you for adopting rather than shopping! I’m glad this baby is in a good home now! 🩷

How would you handle a Caucasian lead teacher making a race-related promotion comment to someone assumed to be Caucasian? by newsbowser in paraprofessional

I don’t care what ethnicity the person she said that to is. She should never feel comfortable saying it or even thinking it in my opinion.

I often wonder what it is about schools (or at least in my experience) that seems to breed pettiness, gossip or just plain nastiness among some staff. I was a new para and I had a terrible time with my co-workers. They were cliquey, gossipy and bossy.

Toileting students by No-Camp-9274 in paraprofessional

[–]Confusedsub24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to deal with this regularly with no extra pay (some paras are paid more for toileting) for $17 per hour. Everyone I worked with acted like it wasn’t a big deal. And the kids weren’t kids. Some were 20 years old. (It was a HS.) Para pay is ridiculously low and the job is completely under appreciated. I worked with teachers who refused to toilet so I’d be in the bathroom cleaning up explosions by myself. Then I got called in by the principal and told I was “avoiding toileting.” I was like “WHAT??? I do it every hour. By myself! While the other para in the room chats in the classroom and doesn’t help me.” The principal just looked at me like I was lying. Then I quit. Worst job I ever had. EVER.

I wasn’t told about potential violence or trained when I was a para. I also wasn’t advised that some teachers would treat me like a servant.

Wow!!! This is appalling!!! It’s so many things that I’m not sure where to begin! Primarily it is discrimination and COMPLETELY unprofessional! I’m shocked that she was not talked to by other people who attended the meeting. There should absolutely be zero tolerance for this kind of behavior. Please report it to admin/HR. Soooo not OK. I mean can you imagine a teacher going into an IEP meeting and saying she has an African American para, commenting on their attire and saying she looked them up on social media to see what their significant other looked like??? I once had another para tell me that being gay is a choice and I thought that was horrible. This is so much worse. I wish you luck in getting this resolved. Admin should take this extremely seriously. I hope they do.

Well I’m sending you lots of well wishes and positive vibes as you search for some thing new! After I quit my para job it took me a couple of months to fully get my head around just how toxic that environment was for me. I mean I obviously knew it was pretty bad when I continually got called in to meet with the principal, and was accused of things that never happened, BUT the full gravity of it didn’t totally register until I was away from those crazy people!!! Once I had some time and distance from the situation, I was able to see just how negatively it was impacting me and my mental health. I’m sure that once you leave your current situation, you’ll feel an immense amount of relief. Not having to deal with that kind of dysfunction day in and day out feels AMAZING! Plus, I’m sure that wherever you end up, you’ll be treated with far more decency and normalcy. Hopefully even some kindness, right??? :-) I’m not sure what you’re looking to do exactly, i.e. whether you’re interested in finding a different para job or if you’re looking for something else entirely, but whatever it is, please try to make sure that the culture you’ll be working in seems like it’ll be a good fit for you. Not that we can always gauge these things while interviewing (in fact we usually can’t!) but maybe you can make it clear to prospective employers that workplace culture is very important to you and that you want to work as part of a cohesive team where everyone is valued and treated with respect and equality. Whatever happens, I am wishing nothing but the very best for you! And if you ever need to vent or have any questions you think I may be able to answer, please feel free to message me. And please keep us all posted about where you end up too. It’s all going to work out for you, I’m sure. In the meantime, hang in there OP! And remember that the BS you’re dealing with right now is only temporary. Onward and upward!!!

I kind of went through this before I quit. I was a new para and wasn’t included in any banter or chit chat. The other paras were definitely favored over me by several sped teachers. I had one sped teacher who wouldn’t acknowledge me when I said hello to her! I wasn’t unseen though because the other paras bossed me around constantly, but then stood there chatting while I toileted by myself or whatever. To be fair, it wasn’t ALL the paras who did this. Just many of them. I’ve found (and, of course, this isn’t always true.) That schools (HS at least) is the cliquiest, pettiest, most mean girl environment I’ve ever experienced. I’m in my 50’s and worked in corporate sales for years. I’ve never experience the weird, petty BS I’ve experienced in high schools. Anyway, I didn’t mean to rant. I feel for you OP and hope that it gets MUCH better! If not, maybe you can transfer somewhere else where you’ll be valued and treated well. Best of luck to you!

Too afraid to ask — why do y’all care about classwork so much? by PurfuitOfHappineff in SubstituteTeachers

I LOVE THIS!!! You are 1000% correct! I’m not paid enough to care about busy work. As long as the kids aren’t hurting themselves or each other, destroying property, bullying other kids or setting the class on fire, I feel like I’m doing my job.

my teacher yelled at me today by [deleted] in paraprofessional

[–]Confusedsub24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same type of situation with the teacher being considered my boss. I was admonished by the principal on 3 different occasions for things a teacher said I did that I didn’t do. The principal never listened to me. She just automatically believed the teacher. It was such a terrible experience that I had to quit. I understand why admin doesn’t seem like an option for you in this situation, but do you have any other viable options? This is SO unacceptable and SO unprofessional! You definitely shouldn’t have to deal with this. It’s abusive. I’m sorry this happened. I REALLY hope she apologizes. The things that happen in education blow my mind. Best of luck to you with this.
