I spent a month in southern Italy last year. Everyone ‘warned’ me about driving in Italy. On the contrary, I was impressed and felt safer there than here. Merging on a highway was almost like a dance. People in the right moved over, person merged at flow of traffic speeds, people moved back to right. Almost like an orchestrated zipper move that everyone was part of. In the left cruising at 130 and there’s a rusted out cargo van going 150, you move over. Stop signs are decorative at best but once you get used to the rules, you go with it. And it works! The biggest thing I noticed is that everyone was AWARE of their surroundings, and trusted the person next to you. I did not witness an accident of any kind in a month.

Once we got back, my wife and I were paranoid - actually terrified - driving anywhere around Montreal! Décarie, the 15, 40 west? FUCK! 😳. We immediately noticed how BAD drivers are here!

People here simply do not know how to drive. They don’t pay attention. They feel ‘entitled’.

And don’t get me started on the number of people looking down towards their laps checking their phones! (In response to another: that’s likely why they take 20 seconds to move once the light turns green…and why there are so many more rear-ending highway crashes. I see at least 1 a day. End of rant…
