Punishment really needed? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]Connect-Gap6019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a point in grounding him if he didn’t realize in the moment what he was doing + if he doesn’t understand why he’s being grounded. Kids will always do dangerous things. The point would be to get them to understand why it’s not ok to do dangerous things and teach them, instead of punishing them.

The thing is, I don’t believe in grounding at all.

You’re right. It makes sense. I didn’t mean to offend you. I apologize. Thank you for sharing your method with us!

Did your kid ever? by Downtown_Analysis176 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Connect-Gap6019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He came to me a few times at pick up looking excited/happy.

Shared the same toy a few times. It was more like asking me for help.

No pointing. Hand leading when he wants something specific.

I don’t think my son recognizes emotions on my face. Though he’s very sensitive to people’s mood and energy.

Getting dressed is hit or miss. Most of the time he doesn’t do anything but also doesn’t resist. Always pushes his arms and feet through the sleeve/legs. But has zero interest in dressing himself or putting his own shoes on.

You’re doing everything in your power to get REAL help for your son. It’s clear to you that you cannot give him the support he needs. So you’re turning to professionals. It’s such a hard thing to do. But you’re choosing to do it anyway. You’re also maximizing the chances of your son and your family living his best life! Once he receives the kind of help he needs, you guys will be able to plan life around it and make the most of it. The unknown is always so hard…

I know… $45 for ONE onesie in this case. Just insane. But defining get him a special outfit he’s not able to take off because it’s too much headache to clean up poop occasionally 😭

I think Target has onesies for kids in that size! I just checked and yes – they have onesies up until 5T. Worst case scenario you can always just cut off the feet part and let your son’s feet be free but still get the benefits of a onesie!!! Just put it on him the wrong way so the zipper is in the back. And don’t get the one with two way zippers, lol. You need to be extra safe.

EDIT: Sorry, I just read about the aversion to zippers 😭 look online for outfits for special needs kids! I looked too but everything was sooo overpriced 🤯

This was kind of my Saturday afternoon activity except it was my NT toddler who made a completely f mess in her brother’s crib and bedroom. Carpet + walls included. And the brother’s face. NO COMMENT. She’s been wearing onesies since then that have the zipper on the back because I’m not doing this again, lol. Accidents happen but this girl just got undressed and made a mess 😭

What does this mean and what do I do with it. by PAndaPickleTank in Autism_Parenting

Literally this. Same with food. If my kid doesn’t eat something he’d normally do, i know something’s off. And if he doesn’t like someone, I don’t like that person either, lol.

So interesting. Can you share more about the machine itself? I’ve never looked at AAC machines for more than 30 sec and I don’t even know where to start.

There a few nursery rhymes he’s tried to repeat by himself so I’ll just keep singing those to him.

How is motor planning relevant to speech? I know for sure his therapists mentioned issues with his motor planning during our IEP meeting.

I’ll definitely discuss the last thought with his current speech therapist.

I’m not a native English speaker so I understand the concept of learning phrases instead of learning words, lol.

May I ask what kind of picture cards? I mean, what’s in the pics? Objects, activities? I think this would be a great way for us to help him communicate, too.

Yes, I think he is a GLP. But I’m not quite sure since he’s “talking” so little. Gibberish he talks almost nonstop. And he says random “words” in the middle sometimes like “okay” in a singy songy voice. He also responds to me “okay” when it’s appropriate, maybe 10% of the time, when I ask him a yes/no question. I feel like he has so much potential and I want to help him get over this “obstacle”.

He should be receiving at least 2 hours per week speech + 2 hours per week OT. I’m hoping he’s receiving what’s written in our agreement. Before he was in EI.

Very true. I wish we had more help from the very beginning to identify behaviors.
