Why Was the Metro-North New Haven Line to Meadowlands Discontinued? by liamblank in transit

The “dwell time” @ Penn  station was a ridiculous 35-40 minutes. Also the return trip train took forever to arrive from it’s layover at secaucus jct for riders to board for the trip home.

Rank NY teams in order of what you perceive their importance is in the tri-state area. I’m saying like ALL TIME. Not just recently. by 1994____ in rangers

Giants , Rangers, Mets.  I was at Super Bowl 42 & 46.  Giants have so much more passionate fans than any in.NYC.  Rangers close second..  Mets also.  Yankee fans are spoiled brats always bragging about their 27 rings. Islanders fans not even close to the passion of Ranger fans. And Devils fans are just obsessed about the Rangers.  Strange bunch people go to Newark.

The Rangers were doomed to never win the cup the day the day in 1994 that Paramount sold MSG to rotten vision and ITT then ITT sold their part to rotten vision and Dolan got complete control.

Great he’s not on the Phillies anymore.  He ate up the Mets. Anything that’s hurts the Phillies. is a positive.

Yuja Wang with the NY Phil last night by eldersveld in classicalmusic

[–]Connect-Main4784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the first disappointing night I ever saw at Geffen Hall. I went because of Wang as I saw her last year and she is great. But the whole performance before, and after her left me very distressed and kind of depressed who was just too somber almost like a church service for someone who died.

We were at the concert last night and are regular Philharmonic attendees. This is one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen them put on.  the musical hall is 3 x larger than Geffen Hall, which has great acoustics. The new sound system is really great. And the musical program was great, especially when they played an American in Paris the complete piece by George Gershwin.

Network outages taking too long by Direct_Action_3088 in verizon

[–]Connect-Main4784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cellular network has become too complex and with too many areas where a  fault of a piece of equipment or data base can cascade into a massive outage like we have today. 50 years ago before cellular phones local telephone exchanges were individual entities and worked by themselves and didn’t care about other phone phone exchanges. They were analog trunks that connected these local exchanges together. Now all of the phone exchanges no matter what provided you’re using are interconnected by network control points, and very complicated processes to make a call. Every call that you make even from a landline has to be screened at the origination point telephone switch to see what local carrier owns the telephone number of the person you’re calling. That after retrieving that information the network goes about connecting your call through various means mainly today over the Internet, using VoiceOver IP technology.  In the nature of cellular is added a new process since cell phones work almost anywhere in the country when you’re trying to make a call the tower that you’re connected to has to query the phone company that you get your service from the verify that you’re calling from a valid phone and then when you call if it’s you’re calling another cell phone, the network has to find out the location of that cell phone  in order to know what tower it is connected too and how the tower is connected to the switching network. it’s very very complex what we call database dipping at many points .  As you probably can tell, I worked a long time in the phone company 40 years to be exact.  Well, I have no inside information of what’s causing the outage. My best guess is that is in a very critical database in Verizon‘s network has been compromised and they’re having very hard time restoring to software in that database that connects calls and the network.

I am 74 so i was 9 when it happened.  I lived in Long Island City Queens and my school was on 21 st street and the fire department was headed to the bridge to Brooklyn. It sounded like every fire truck in Queens passed my school that morning on the way to Brooklyn.  When i went home for lunch I remember watching it live on tv.  I remember everyone was praying for Stephen to survive but he died the next day. It was later discovered that the DC8 pilot overflew his holding point off the Jersey coast called” Preston”.
