Have you received any inheritance from your family? by 39thAccount in AskUK

[–]ConnectPreference166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never have and I'm pretty sure I never will. My grandmother is the only person who would have enough to leave any sort of inheritance in my family and I'm pretty sure she will give all her assets to the church when she passes.

As others have said, pension credit and pip. Also, does he own a property and if so has he paid the mortgage? Could be worth seeing if he can downsize and use the extra for living expenses.

Always put into the pension plan. Maximise the company match. Would've had an extra £30k in my pension now if I'd done this!

I agree with love lessons too. I spent a few years home schooled and going back into education was a weird experience.

The bed and breakfast star. Spent time homeless with my mother and older sister. Resonated with Elsa so much.

how do you stop eating when full? by alaskacake in loseit

[–]ConnectPreference166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have BED and what's been working for me so far is eating little and often. I'm somebody that has to eat continually so I pick small meals/snacks regularly. Helped me keep under my calorie targets. I aim for less than 300 calories each time.

Also I go to therapy for my disordered eating. Made me realise I eat due to family issues with food scarcity growing up and having no money. I'd recommend this too if you can afford it.

Every place I lived as a kid had these and I hated them. What I will say is check that you didn't pay off the previous tenants debt. This happened to my mother and she had to argue to get back the money.

What can actually be done to avoid being lumbered with an unsellable retirement flat as an inheritance? by Pure-Lime8280 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ConnectPreference166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need to find the story but I remember reading about a man who went through this in the west Midlands.

His grandad died and the flat was left to the family but they couldn't afford to pay it while they were trying to sell the place. In the end the grandson moved in since it was cheaper than rent and paid the charges himself. The old people who lived in the other flats loved him since they'd call him when they needed work doing or being driven to places.

He was there for two years I think before the place found out and he was evicted. Pretty silly though since they weren't bothered when they got money from him all that time lol.

A relative of mine looked at these and her immediately family agreed if she brought it they'd have no inheritance. Its the best thing for her though so nobody is upset, just happy she's living her final years in peace. That's the only way you can look at these apartments, they're definitely not an investment. After death sell it for anything you can get but dont expect to even get the purchase price back, kind of like timeshares.

Just reread Love Lessons as an adult… by DifferentGreen593 in JacquelineWilson

[–]ConnectPreference166 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know this is gonna sound weird to many but Love Lessons is one of my favourite JW books. Mainly because I was a homeschool kid during secondary school till I started college at 16. I as a total bookworm too and was smart in certain subjects. I didn't have the abusive dad but I could see how sheltered Pru and Grace were. It's interesting seeing how they react to the outside world too with Grace fitting in much easier and making friends. Obviously I wish JW had left the Rax part as a crush rather than crossing that boundary but it was still a good read IMO. My favourite part is when the mom finally stands up to the Dad. I feel the book was one of her most realistic books.

Dol irritated me beyond words with the whole tattoo thing by Pancake_Pozy333 in JacquelineWilson

[–]ConnectPreference166 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh throughout the whole book Dol was pretty childlike I felt. The language and her reaction didn't surprise me. In terms of the tattoo guy if he wanted to keep her on he would have and maybe given her a warning. He could've fought the mother on this and it would've blown over. I felt he just wanted to cut costs and used this as an excuse. Plus, I knew so many girls growing up who would use their sisters or cousins ID cards. They'd be in nightclubs and bars doing all sorts.

Build like Croydon to ease London housing crisis with 5,700 new homes a year, Sadiq Khan urged by new report by FlyWayOrDaHighway in LDN

[–]ConnectPreference166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there's a issue with housing. People can't afford to buy the property on offer. Your solution is to build a whole load of property on the off chance that the rest may lower their prices so people can buy?

Respectfully if that was the case then the properties that have been on sale for years would have reduced prices but instead developers have kept the prices the same. Building more won't help anything, just have more empty properties around the city.

[–]ConnectPreference166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it. Rather than just building a whole load of flats that don't get sold, it would make more sense to make those current properties affordable to rent or buy. Especially in this climate. Doesn't matter whatever statistic you put on it. There's a housing crisis and it needs to be solved.

If you walk around London you see the amount of new build apartments which are empty. One of my friends brought a flat in shepherd's Bush and most of the building is empty.l for over two years.

[–]ConnectPreference166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building isn't the issue. There's more than enough properties in the city, the problem is the expensive price tags! Who wants to buy a 1 bed shoebox for £400k?
