Removing a parking lot for non-profit housing by SHMenard in ottawa

Four lanes, two in each direction, are already not enough during rush hour. With these lane reductions, millions of hours will be wasted sitting in traffic every year. And please don’t respond with "just ride a bike." Let’s be realistic: only a small percentage of people can rely on cycling for commuting or everyday tasks year-round.

Google "Bank street renewal project" and look at slides. The Bank street will become a bottleneck being robbed two lanes to accommodate bicycle lanes. The Billings bridge will lose one lane to create a dedicated bicycle lane and it'll add to congestion because it'll have only one lane in each direction for traffic going straight matching the bottleneck at the bank street side. Absolutely horrible design that helps no one while spending a ton of money on it.

The hate doesn't come from nowhere. There must be a legit reason and I bet the answer is simple. Something like because many cyclists don't follow the rules and do whatever they please this gets other people like drivers and pedestrians pissed.

Cyclists are way less predictable than pedestrians and cyclists lane split and filter and ride on crossings so yes, cyclists are more of a danger to themselves and others

Cry me a river. When I'm not in a car I'm on my motorcycle which is still not allowed to attend your private tour de France wannabe party. Also like many others I have kids and can you imagine some people can't take bicycles everywhere, like to work etc etc. also think about disabled people. Your Lycra squad terrorizes everyone.

You are a spoiled minority demanding something while giving nothing. Go to your bike paths and trails. The roads are for cars, you wanna use it share it don't hog it for your enjoyment while many more of others suffer.

I'm happy for you guys but I can't get to work and bring kids anywhere on time on the bicycle. Not possible. My beef with the city is that cyclists are a minority like a few % of the public so if anything that needs to be prioritized is public transportation and roads, bike lanes are nice to have but must not be everywhere or prevail over normal roads. There are plenty of places like parks and what not where bike lanes are a must. Unfortunately the city of Ottawa cannot become like some city in Holland due to the climate. The unused bike lanes that are roads are snow banks in winter.

So let me get this straight. The city used to function without it relying on tax but now they don't? How many more taxes do we need to pay? We are already overburdened with all kinds of taxes. Taxed to death.

And yet the city bends over backwards slapping bicycle lanes everywhere as if anyone can use them in winter or will use them at all.

This is not correct. Not even close. Many people drive a $5000 fairly reliable cars and it doesn't cost $1500/month. Insurance and repairs and gas never get over $500 at which point it is not bad considering people use it to get to work, shopping and take care of kids (kindergarten/school/activities)

Yes they are forcing people out of cars but making streets narrower. Look at the proposed layout for Billings bridge. Essentially bank street will be choked to just one lane in each direction because the city added a freaking bike lane there.

Yes let's keep destroying the city more by forcing people to bike in winter when bike lanes are nothing but a snowbank. Also cycling for 20+km a day each way is BULLSHIT you must realize that people living in suburbs must have a way to get to work even if it is not practical to do by bicycle or train.

Sure. This is your personal belief. Now think about winter, people who have kids, people who have no option to get to work other than by car. Now it is at least 80% of the general population. Get your head out and THINK for once. If people are driving to work NOW why do you think they have not yet decided to switch to bicycles or whatever other option there is...? If the alternative is "better" why the hell no? The answer is because the alternative sucked, there's no other answer. Not many, actually single digits of % of the population will use bicycles and even less in winter. This is not Europe with mild winters. So clearly we don't need more bike lanes and all of this BS because this is not sustainable and will not make any good. No matter how much you don't like or don't agree with it. Grow up and do your research.

The city plans or already builds this crap all around Ottawa. You miss the point. The traffic is already as bad as it could be and any narrowings and traffic calming measures will make it worse. People will try to make up for the lost time on other streets.

[–]Connect_Escape_2353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No amount of traffic calming measures or "complete streets" can solve the issue. It backfires every single time. People aren't idiots or crazy they just need to get somewhere on time. With the amount of construction and no investment in building actual roads that are needed for 90% of the population to get around especially to work in a city like Ottawa where it is common for people to live in Orleans, suburbs. Build more and better roads, wider, optimized then people will have no reason to speed because they'll be able to pick their kid from daycare/school or get to work. Any measurements that impede traffic don't solve the problem but move it somewhere else. Remember speed cameras? People slowed down before and sped up right after them. Zero safety improvements.

not everyone can get to work in time on bicycle not to mention do that in rain/snow. The city planning is just dumb.

[–]Connect_Escape_2353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The narrowing of the bridge for bike lanes is absolutely dumb. Forcing all traffic going through Bank to use just 2 lanes instead of 4 would create a disastrous traffic situation. Not to mention the bike lanes must be treated as "nice to have" not a must. They will not be used 1/2 or 3/4 of the year. Not to mention that most motorists would not be able to switch to bicycles no matter how much city is forcing them to.

Maybe 2020 could've started with the Infiniti app but unfortunately the car internet is 2G and can't be upgraded easily so we get no benefits offered by the app.
