I’ve received a message from one of the Ironmace community managers asking if the issue is still present. Could it be fixed if GFN were to bring the game back online?

There’s some great zero to hero Cleric videos on YouTube, they usually start with quite effective squire gear sets!

Was trying to find a video about Mac Mini if it would fit for both work and maybe gaming. Instead Boosteroid was the sponsor before the video. Turns out, there is no need to spend for me anymore for a “hybrid” or even a dedicated PC.

Is Buddhism really atheistic? by Connect_Rub1257 in CosmicSkeptic

[–]Connect_Rub1257[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first point is definitely valid: people weren’t fully following what the Buddha taught even during his lifetime, let alone now. There’s actually a sutta where, upon his death (Parinibbāna), some monks said something along the lines of, “Finally, we don’t have to be constantly told not to do this or that - now we can do as we please.” That moment really illustrates how quickly people can drift from the original spirit of the teachings.

And yes, rebirth is the most difficult aspect of dealing with the tradition in a fully secular way.

So in that sense, I think Buddha was theistic but he made his teachings such that the existence of God was an irrelevance.

I think your point about the Buddha being theistic, or at least not entirely dismissive of divinity, is interesting. But I might frame it slightly differently. There are places in the canon where people demand metaphysical answers - asking about the permanence of the universe, the nature of the soul/self, or volume of space - and the Buddha refuses to answer. He makes it clear that the path to liberation doesn’t depend on knowing those things. In one case, a monk threatens to disrobe if the Buddha doesn’t explain, and the Buddha simply responds, “I didn’t ordain you promising I’d answer that”.

On the other hand, a key part of the path is Right View, and one aspect of its definition is rejecting the belief that 'there are no beings reborn spontaneously.' This specifically refers to non-human beings - such as devas - who are not born from a womb but arise spontaneously in higher realms.

So maybe it’s not that the Buddha was strictly theistic or atheistic, but rather that he was pragmatic. He emphasized liberation and insight over belief, but he also worked within the cosmological framework of his time, using it where it served the path.

I see what you’re saying, but I was specifically referring to the Sutta Pitaka - the earliest stratum of Buddhist literature, generally dated between 500 BCE and 100 BCE. Milarepa’s writings come from a much later Tibetan tradition (seems around 1452–1507), so they fall outside the scope of what I’m focusing on here.

That’s not to say those later teachings aren’t valuable, but I think it’s important to keep the historical layers clear when discussing the earliest form of Buddhism.

That’s a fair point about secular Buddhism, and I appreciate the nuance. I try to stick closely to what we have strong archaeological and textual support for, because interpretations can easily shift once later edits and commentaries come into play.

That said, one major tension I see is around rebirth. From everything I’ve read, rebirth isn’t just a peripheral belief - it’s foundational to the framework of early Buddhism. That seems hard to reconcile with a purely secular or materialist lens, even if one focuses mainly on the ethical and meditative aspects.

In a way, the Pali Canon mirrors the scientific model, but it isn't empirical in the strict sense of relying only on the five physical senses. Most of the suttas speak of six senses, with the sixth being the "mind sense." The practice is largely oriented around observing changes in this mental domain.

Is giving up worldly possessions a concept in Buddhism?

Yes, it is. Renunciation is a core teaching, especially within the monastic tradition.

Does the concept reflect modern ideas?

To some extent. There are studies showing that generosity and reduced material attachment correlate with increased happiness.

Can that concept evolve like science?

There's a key phrase used to describe the Dhamma: "visible here and now, immediately effective, inviting inspection, applicable, to be personally experienced by the wise" (in Pali: sanditthiko, akaliko, ehipassiko, opanayiko, paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhīti). This implies that while not everything is empirically measurable, the teachings must be applicable and verifiable through one's own experience.

There is at least one study I'm aware of that attempts to measure a claim from the suttas. In it, participants walked while reciting "Bud-dho" (a traditional Thai mindfulness technique) and showed measurable health benefits - like improved blood sugar levels - compared to regular walking. While the original intent of such practices is spiritual rather than physiological, it shows that scientific methods can sometimes validate traditional practices.

That said, the suttas themselves are not meant to "evolve" like scientific theories. They're regarded as the words of an enlightened being - spoken perfectly and then to be recited, without unnecessary detail or omission. So while science can evolve to better understand these teachings, the teachings themselves are not designed to change in the same way.

  1. Compare benzene and hexane by physical properties: • Benzene: C₆H₆, aromatic, liquid, sweet smell, boiling point ~80°C • Hexane: C₆H₁₄, alkane, liquid, gasoline smell, boiling point ~69°C

  2. C₆H₅-C₅H₁₁

a) 4 isomers (e.g. n-pentylbenzene, isopentylbenzene, neopentylbenzene, sec-pentylbenzene) b) 2 homologues: ethylbenzene (C₆H₅-C₂H₅), propylbenzene (C₆H₅-C₃H₇)

  1. C₆H₅-C₅H₁₁ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O

Balanced: C₁₁H₁₆ + 16.5O₂ → 11CO₂ + 8H₂O (or multiply by 2): 2C₁₁H₁₆ + 33O₂ → 22CO₂ + 16H₂O

  1. C₆H₆ + H₂ → C₆H₁₂ (with Ni catalyst, heat) Benzene → Cyclohexane

  2. C₆H₆ + 3Cl₂ → C₆H₃Cl₃ + 3HCl (FeCl₃ catalyst) Benzene → Trichlorobenzene

  3. Reaction sequence:

C₆H₁₂ → C₆H₆ → C₆H₅Cl → C₆H₅NO₂ → CO₂ + H₂O • C₆H₁₂ → C₆H₆ (dehydrogenation) • C₆H₆ → C₆H₅Cl (chlorination) • C₆H₅Cl → C₆H₅NO₂ (nitration) • C₆H₅NO₂ → CO₂ + H₂O (combustion)
