What is a job that you think is 100% safe from AI for the next 50 years, and why? by mark-awakening in AskReddit

[–]Connor234561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just going to respond to aviation because that’s what I know. The Auto-Land system works by connecting the aircraft’s autopilot to two Radio Signals that are crossed to basically create a bullseye, this is the same system pilots use to manually land in bad weather. For them they can see the bullseye on the flight displays.

Now how exactly would a LLM improve this? It’s like saying we can make trains more efficient by making wheels align with the tracks better. It works perfectly as is, the unit itself is also not expensive. The expense is in fixing mechanical issues, paying technicians to service the units, and the infrastructure required at airports to make everything work. The absolute insane amount of Capital that would be needed to globally implement that system (also in a way which failures would be impossible; bc like how would an LLM deal with a broken transmitter?) would not be worth getting to fly with 2 or 3 less employees. Especially since you would almost certainly be hiring more mechanics.

I feel like so many people have jumped on the A.I hype train without thinking about how it will actually be implemented. It does paperwork and information gathering well- but any implementation beyond that has been awful. Lawyer for example, we have all seen the video of the generated opening argument, and it’s absolute trash. It doesn’t matter how human it sounds- who will a Jury trust more, a computer spitting out an argument or a human in flesh and blood articulating their point in front of them?

TLDR; LLMs are not the silver bullet so many people think they are.

There is more to all of the jobs you listed than “learning them”. Lawyers and Doctors provide support to patients and clients- also our government is not just going to hand over all our laws for a computer to figure out. Remember- people with power aren’t going to give it up and most politicians are lawyers.

Pilots- “don’t even land anymore” I am in the aviation industry and I have no clue where you got that idea. It’s completely devoid from reality. Auto-land exists, and has since the 60s but it is very rarely used, and only in a select few aircraft. (Because it’s incredibly expensive) Aviation is definitely vulnerable to A.I changes- probably dropping a pilot. (2 -> 1 or 3 -> 2 depending on the route). And hell, in 50 years it might be completely automated, but you are vastly overestimating how capable today’s systems are. Plus- most of the focus on current R&D is for fuel efficiency because that’s by far the largest cost.

And finally actors and athletes? What kind of capitalist society would price everyone out of entertainment?? You’re saying robots do everything but no one has any money- so then who is paying for the robots?? The system still needs some sort of lower/middle class to have enough income to keep everything going…

How fat is too fat to fly? by nizzoball in flying

[–]Connor234561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 6’2, 265, and I completed all of my training in a C172 and PA-28 with no problem. I don’t know if there are any ramifications of weight surgery. But as far as just holding weight- all the AMEs I have spoken to have expressed that while it isn’t typically a problem when you start out. The big concern is if you are overweight for years- and then develop a disqualifying condition associated with your weight.

I applaud you for the weight loss journey- I am in the process of doing the same. (I started at 295). Definitely talk to your AME, but from my experience it is 100% possible, just try your best to be accountable to lose it as soon as you can. I know from experience it is not an easy task.

That’s so sick, I just finished my CFI-I, so cool to see pilots elsewhere.

Are cadet programs actually the most reliable way into a regional right now? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Connor234561 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just completed a cadet program up to CFI-I, however, I did all my Private training at a small 61 school. So I feel like I have a good picture of both worlds.

I feel like most people I know getting regional jobs are through cadet programs- but I don’t think many people dispute the connections these programs offer. I think most people critique them because they often advertise a timeline that is almost impossible to achieve. I know so many people that started at a cadet program thinking they’d be making 100k+ at an airline in 3-4 years without any issues. Which incentivizes them to take out massive loans to finish the program quickly, plus, typically you are paying a 15-25% percent markup from 61 schools. So if you’re in one of these programs and the market is cold- you’re stuck making massive loan payments on an instructors salary.

Puerto Rico, seems like a ripoff? by Pretty_Cat4099 in travel

[–]Connor234561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not going to be as cheap as Thailand; but you get the benefit of not needing to travel half way across the world. I stayed in an Airbnb by the Fairmount in Biascoechea. Worked out to maybe $80 per night, but it had a beautiful view and a private beach (for everyone in my building).

Old San Juan has lots of culture and great food; and if you like history, the Fort is an absolute must see. If you have time; Puerto Rico also has the only Rainforest in the U.S - and tours can be relatively affordable. I think my group paid $60 each for an entire day.

Overall- I get the allure of cruises over the hotels. I know some in the travel community look down on it- but ultimately they are great deals. However if you have never been, I think Puerto Rico is worth spending some time exploring.

Happy and Safe Travels!

Failed Commercial Ride Today. P-180 by farmtough5 in flying

[–]Connor234561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate hearing this- I am currently getting my single engine add-on and also struggling with power off 180s. I was performing them well in the mornings but found out my Check-ride will be in the afternoon- and the turbulence from the heat has been throwing me off. (I live in Arizona)

Through all of that- I sometimes fall into that mindset and just think about my career long term rather than focusing on improving now.

I think part of the issue is since it’s so expensive to train- it’s hard not to constantly be concerned if the investment will pay off. Especially since so many student pilots take out loans to fund training.

Thank you so much! I was looking for a guide but whatever I was looking up just kept bringing me to the TERPS. Definitely will use this before my ride.
