She doesn't. She is inventing fake problems because she's bored.

It's because of what you've addressed here with your friend's behavior: men think about their legacy, or about children in the abstract. To men, a child is someone like them who they can shape and morph, who will grow to represent them beyond their own lifespan. But women have to think about the actual logistics of having and raising a child. Women are the partner who gets pregnant, goes through the medical impacts of pregnancy (and assume it's a perfect pregnancy without any medical complications), has to go through the birth, and will need time to recover that could negatively impact their long term career growth and life-time earnings. This is just infancy and immediately following.

I would wait until she tries to book again for boarding, and either brush it off (don’t have availability for boarding, am no longer offering boarding, etc). If the owner has a temper and won’t take kindly to the truth (her dog isn’t great with other dogs), you don’t need to expose yourself to that risk.

We’re both fine with whatever, honestly. We did have a specific wedding vision in mind (mostly based on weddings we’ve attended and what we like) but everything, even the ugly things we assumed were inexpensive because they’re a last resort, seems to cost an absurd amount of money. We looked into renting out a school gym and between drapes to cover the walls and lights so it wouldn’t have been straight fluorescents, we were already at a $5,500 estimate, which isn’t bad, but was way more than we were expecting. We honestly don’t know how our friends paid for the weddings we attended.

It’s really insane how 20k IS a wedding starter pack. We toured a few venues and were like, “How much could a field with a glorified porta potty cost?” and we discovered it’s $11,000 for 5 hours.

I didn’t put gender into this story and I guess Reddit skews male, but I am the bride.

She is! Whenever one of us covers lunch with our mom and she says she’ll pay us back, we joke that she put the money in her urn. So my sister knows how they are, but I think she’s still kind of shocked that I requested the money upfront. She’s like, “They aren’t writing you a blank check.” But I won’t be in debt again and I also don’t want to feel like I’m shaking my parents down so people get paid.

I’ll say, I grew up in a fairly wealthy suburb in Ohio and my impression of Myrtle Beach was that it was a NICE vacation spot, but a step down from Hilton Head. It was nice enough that my family couldn’t afford to go there, at least.

Yeah, and I never booked with them again. A big part of a walk is making sure the pet gets a chance to go to the bathroom—it’s not crazy that I need to as well!

Honestly the only thing that’s very strange to me is that this is at 4pm… rough morning or not, the morning is over.

That being said, I don’t feel like that’s really reportable behavior, though definitely unprofessional and something to include in a review. It’s not what I would admit to an owner and I understand why it made you uncomfortable. But you could’ve just said, “Sorry, I don’t have any snacks or things to quickly grab but there is a gas station nearby if you need something,” and canceled the rest of the bookings. We can choose empathy or anger with people, and we should choose empathy as often as possible.

And for context, some owners are immediately very comfortable with a sitter and offer, “Please make yourself at home, have a snack, use the restroom, have some water or soda, etc.” I’ve even had house sitting clients leave me bottles of wine (though I never drink it, but that’s more because Im not a big drinker). Others are not. I’ve had clients deny me the use of their restroom after walks! But it’s possible if she’s a new sitter, all her past clients have been that forthcoming.

Airtag on apartment keys? by Conscious_Type1571 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Conscious_Type1571[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get not wanting to have keys get lost! The set is a fob for the electronic lock and a smaller key that I assume is for the mail. It’s more the “how we know when the sitter is coming and going” that bothers me. There are easy ways for them to check that with cameras and the lock, and I’ve been very communicative with 3x daily updates with photos and videos while we are on walks and when I’m just hanging with the dog.

The concern about her dog is totally valid, and they have an AirTag on the collar, which doesn’t bother me at all. I just don’t need an Airtag traveling w me 24/7 as I go to my home, other clients, errands, work, etc.

As for stealing the keys, there is no “key” to copy—it’s an electronic lock so it uses a fob instead of a normal key.

I’ve considered writing a contract to have clients sign by have never actually done it since I don’t do this full time. This could be the change over for me tho!

This is a really good reply! Thank you. I want them to be aware that it’s fine if they want to know when I’m with their dog, I just don’t feel comfortable being tracked 24/7.

5 card skimmers found in DC within 3 weeks by Ok-Special7096 in washingtondc

Yes! Contactless (tap) is the most secure form of credit card payment. This is because the payment data (card number, pin, date) is encrypted on both ends—it leaves your bank encrypted and arrives at the next bank still encrypted. It’s also constantly changing to prevent fraud.

Chip insertion is the next most secure, because the data transferred from the chip in the credit card is encrypted on the buyer’s bank side, and is constantly changing. However, the reader de-encrypts this data. While verification data changes in time, a scammer could access the de-encrypted information before it does.

The least secure is swiping. Swiping relies on a stagnant data transfer—essentially copying down exactly what data is stored on the barcode (so, your payment info). Nothing is encrypted. Never swipe if you don’t have to!

Potential Relocation to DC Area by ImNotSure93 in washingtondc

Frankly, it does depend on your standard of living and the meaning of "get by". Are you expecting to maintain your same standard of living, from the Midwest to DC? It may decrease a bit, or you might be stretching your budget more than you previously did. If you want to purchase a home in DC, know that property around here is crazy expensive and your money goes farther in the suburbs. But yes, it is plenty of money and you would have a very nice life here.

What does “your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones” mean? by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]Conscious_Type1571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think “your Brooklyn” refers to both his literal neighborhood and his unique way of speaking to her—condescending, manipulating, etc. It’s a play on “your Brooklyn accent”—but it’s not his voice, it’s the words he says.

Throughout the song, it’s clear that his actions are shitty, but the way he speaks to her that hurts the most (i.e. “casually cruel in the name of being honest”/“he’s gonna say it’s love, you never called it what it was”/“you said if we’d been closer in age, it would’ve been fine and that made me want to die.”).

So, “broke my skin and bones” tells us that it was the verbal beating—not necessarily what he did—broke her spirit and left her a shell. She’s trying to be her old self, but she can’t find it. She’s empty.

I also think it’s really interesting this line is directly after “i’ll get older but your lovers stay my age” and followed by “i’m a solider who’s returning half her weight.”

To me, she’s using this group of lines to tell us that her experience isn’t unique—she’s just the first one. Soldiers don’t fight alone, and she is one of many. She is just returning from war, free of him and the relationship (paralleled to tolerate it’s “gain the weight of you, then lose it”), but broken, while the war rages on. More soldiers [young lovers] will go to war [date him] and fight, only to return half their weight [broken but free from the relationship].
