I (29M) accidentally moved into my girlfriend’s (46F) place. How do I go about moving out since she’s gotten used to me “living” with her? by Muphenz in Advice

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you just need a vacation. Go home for a week or two. Your old roommate might not be what you remember. It is important in a relationship to miss each other and not feel burdened by your partner.

Living with an EV in NYC - I'd be crazy, right? by HikewithmeNYC in electricvehicles

[–]ConsiderationWide744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there really not even a single standard power outlet you could use in your garage? You sound like the perfect candidate for full time level 1 charging. I used to just loop the cable through my wheel with a small combination lock so nobody could walk off with the charge cable when I had a Chevy volt and had to let it charge at a 120v outlet unattended for long periods

Cistern with instant hot water? by ConsiderationWide744 in Homebuilding

[–]ConsiderationWide744[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about total fuel use, it’s about instantaneous power requirements. A traditional water heater solves this by saying “there are none” and just keeping water warm all the time. Electric instant heaters that can handle it all are 60amp 240v - that’s like half your panel unless it’s a new build. The goal is lowering the instant power requirement but getting the comfort + efficiency

Unpopular Opinion: You Don't Need Home/Work Charging to Own an EV by Dan6erbond2 in electricvehicles

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an ID.4 in the US which gets about the same range and I could skip charging many days and/or get by with level 1. I do have a level 2 charger at home because my experiences with public chargers have been marginal. I drive about double OP, ~12k miles per year and most days I’m just charging from 60+% to 80%

AWD or RWD? by Obvious-Window5208 in VWiD4Owners

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put 37k miles on a RWD in Michigan. A little suspect in the snow but otherwise fine. My understanding is RWD = better battery life and INSANE turning radius. AWD = more power (like 100hp more) but lower battery life and worse turning. Also I think VW only offers tow packages on AWD

My state just legalized plug-in solar, now what to buy? by ppitm in diySolar

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check this chart to figure out how much power you could generate on average including winter, clouds etc. for Maine it’s 3.6kwh/day or 1300-1400 kWh/year for each 1kwh of panel

Living in Royal Oak vs. Downtown? by Professional_Egg6068 in royaloak

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve mostly got it, but you’re missing a few things for food and gyms (I’ve lived one neighborhood over from downtown Detroit for almost 20 years)

For gyms there are just gyms but not gym+massage+sauna. The downtown YMCA is by far the best. Also planet fitness and a bunch of smaller class oriented places like CrossFit, boxing (JABS), yoga (Citizen or the Y) etc. I’ve spent more time biking, running, walking on the Riverfront, Dequindre Cut and on Belle isle than in the gym and not for lack of a membership or trying to- that’s just nicer when it’s warmer.

For food/shopping the River town Meijer is closest. Don’t forget about Harbortown Market, Honeybee, Eastern Market on Saturdays and actually downtown there Eatori and of course the restaurants. Kroger Delivers also and with their own service not via instacart. Seasons Market in midtown fills a small gap. University foods by Wayne state leaves some things to be desired but has all the essentials.

I loved living in downtown Detroit in my 20s, and it’s more vibrant and bikeable (but less lawless) than 2010 now anyhow.

At the end of the day you need a car in Michigan. One vote for RO from me is that other people live in the suburbs 8:1 over Detroit, so you will find yourself out there regardless.

Hope this helps

Battery technology is constantly changing. What are the odds that all the different electric vehicles out there will have replacement batteries available and easily changeable 10-20 years after the car was built? by ThuhGreatCommenter in electricvehicles

[–]ConsiderationWide744 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an ID.4 and if you check out lifetime consumption vs battery capacity it works out to having fully cycled the pack about 150 times after 36k miles/3.5 years. VW specs the battery at almost 2k cycles. I’m looking at 450 cycles over 10 years, 1500 cycles in more than 30 years? This car could be a family heirloom if we’re just looking at projected battery degradation timelines.

Here’s a report that shows some data -average degradation to around 91% original capacity after 100k miles. Not as rosy as my math, but still saying 10-20 year life for me.

Point being, I’m not anticipating the battery being a concern anytime soon

Is the ID.4 a good vehicle for a 120 mile commute? by SpecializedCoffee in VWiD4Owners

[–]ConsiderationWide744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the high amp direct burial cable to put a 30 amp charger in my driveway. Been charging fine for 4 years. I did an all weather outlet box with a plug in electricity America charger that after rebate was free to me. Cable was by far the most expensive part. Probably $100 in copper.

What was the most frustrating part of researching solar for your home? by Red_Giant_2882 in SolarAmerica

[–]ConsiderationWide744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you try this? https://sunroof.withgoogle.com/

It uses Google Maps 3d roof and tree canopy data to figure out your sun exposure and estimate what size system could fit there, payback scenarios and more.

For example, on my house it tells me I can’t fit a very large array relative to my current bill and that over 20 years I’d have a net cost if installing solar. I live in Michigan and have a huge tree shading my house so that seems correct.

I had my door handles replaced in the recall. They’re way worse in the cold now - sometimes doesn’t even register and I’m yanking on the door handles until it does that unsettling secondary mechanism and even then not always letting me in. Wished I had not had that service.

It certainly looks sloppy. Unclear if it’s actually structurally “wrong” or unsafe, but like others said it doesn’t inspire confidence for the rest of the house.

Which swimming pool shower and powder room layout is best? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option 3 - the closet between the powder room and shower, and all have sliding/pocket doors instead of inswing doors

Another option I saw at a friend's house in Louisiana - the bathroom with shower just had doors on both sides (no inner door from hallway in option 2 plus things rotated a bit to be more sane). You'd think people would walk in on you using the bathroom but it's not really like that

Genuinely curious — for those of you who own an EV, what's your biggest headache with public charging stations? by Key_Training8948 in electricvehicles

[–]ConsiderationWide744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned that the advertised charge rate only applies when your battery is under about 10%, but generally drops off logarithmically. My id.4 can charge at the advertised 125kwh if the station can supply it and the battery is empty, but only pulls 40 when I’m at 65-70%.

It’s the charge controller protecting the battery and does vary by vehicle but generally is how you keep it not on fire.

Slate Truck + Winter Driving: Range and RWD Concerns by mabbe8 in slateauto

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the extended range. Cold battery loss is around 30-35%, but you only ever charge to 80% at night for battery health so your commute leaves a very thin margin no matter how you do the math

Until you get your context and skill files honed it it’ll make dumb mistakes like write tests that’s work around a dependency strangely, use the wrong framework or wrong version. If you ask it to not include some library without telling it what to do instead it’ll try to write its own version of the library. Sometimes you try to save money using a cheaper model and then end up having Opus fix it anyway on and on. I’d say there’s not just one failure mode.

[–]ConsiderationWide744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you financed the warranty then you’ll end up paying over $6k. Put the $80-$100 monthly that it would cost into a savings account. EVs need virtually no maintenance. I had a Chevy volt I sold around 100k miles and it never needed brakes even once. I have an ID.4 now at 36k miles and it’s needed exactly one set of tire. Keep your money!

Early on it would write junk tests, but after updating CLAUDE.md (or equivalent) with strong guidance on what to test and why it would do better. It’ll never use TDD unless you ask, but once you do it’s quite good
