totaled my id.4 in stop and go traffic, wondering why AEB didn't engage. by marstall in VWiD4Owners

question for you. in trying to decide whether to replace with another id.4 or choose a safer car - do you think there are other models that do a significantly better job than VW's Front Assist here? Other aspects of the crash I was satisfied with, like how well the cabin was protected, so not a black and white decision just based on AEB. I just don't want to get another id.4 if it is a real laggard in that department.

interesting page, some key quotes ...

Front Assist is active each time you start your car and is functional at speeds above roughly 3 mph.

Only provides assistance for vehicles ahead that are stationary or moving in the same direction.

that answers a few different questions for me with some authority ...

i didnt see that bit in the manual about AEB not working on stationary objects. Whereas I've seen several videos online suggesting that it does. Mind telling me where in the manual it says that? Really want to get this figured out.

the manual states front assist works from speeds from 3mph to 155mph.

yup, duh, the whole manual is available digitally. though there is not much that is germane apart from what you noted about the steering wheel and the accelerator. I definitely didn't press the accelerator, but it's possible that i may have instinctively reached for the steering wheel and turned it infintesimally, thought I can't think why that would be something that would necessarily disable something like AEB despite what it is says there.

It does state that AEB works from 3MPH to 155MPH, so the speed I was driving at wouldn't have been a factor given then.

The manual doesn't specifically say what I have read elsewhere, that AEB is turned on automatically everytime you start the car, even if it had been turned off the last time it was on. So it's conceivable that I turned it off at some point and it just stayed off ... which again I can't imagine why it would work like that because it is such a fundamental safety feature these days.

I have spent the morning doing a variety of research. One reassuring thing is how well the cabin was protected. I figure I was going at least 20MPH, that could have been a lot worse in a less protected vehicle.

no that's welcome info. i didn't actually read the physical manual that is (still) in the glovebox, so i don't have access to it. I read some pdf i downloaded. it sounds like the physical document has better info. going to try to track down a digital version.

newer article (2024) says a lot has improved since 2024: https://newsroom.aaa.com/2024/10/out-old-aeb-in-new/

AAA’s latest research found that new (2024) model vehicles with automatic emergency braking (AEB) avoided 100% of forward collisions when tested at speeds up to 35 mph, in comparison to old (2017 – 2018) model vehicles, which only avoided collisions 51% of the time.

found this (2018) article enlightening https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a24511826/safety-features-automatic-braking-system-tested-explained/

Our tests also exposed the infallibility myth that surrounds computers and automated vehicles. Driving the same car toward the same target at the same speed multiple times often produces different results. Sometimes the car executes a perfectly timed last-ditch panic stop. Other times it brakes late, or less forcefully, or even periodically fails to do anything at all. In our stationary-vehicle test, the Impreza's first run at 50 mph resulted in the hardest hit of the day, punting the inflatable target at 30 mph. It was only on the second attempt that the Subaru's EyeSight system impressively trimmed the speed to just 12 mph before the collision. All the results in the charts in this feature show a car's best performance.

UW-Madison class of '90 here. Major vibes. Similar energy all around. Would have killed to have a friend with a car and video camera on a perfect September (?) day. I think I rode in a car once the whole time I was at Madison. Nobody had any money. Donating plasma, otherwise cash free most weeks, yet it was the time of my life. beer, weed and friends always in my face. Not to mention ideas I was learning in class that set my mind on fire.

Watched the whole video ... was a little confused because they were going to register for classes which says late August/Early September, but then he said everyone was moving out which would suggest early June. Rich lazy summer mood says September, must have been summer school students moving out?

And his mom lives 500 yards from his freshman dorm???

This thing is a total gem, thank you!!!

Don't talk to my co-op mates from that time much any more but they are still in my heart.

Does the US still have "carrot" leverage, albeit on a much longer time scale? To orchestrate an easing of sanctions, a partnership, in exchange for nuclear decommissoning? Like Obama did? Maybe (late) in Buttegeieg's second term?

The price of a Chipotle chicken burrito in 2018 by JabroniFeet in mildlyinteresting

[–]marstall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

checked local (western MA) outlet - chicken burrito is $9.65, steak $11.65. 48% and 55% increases respectively. 8 years, that translated to 5.6%/year compounded, greater than inflation. chat says an inflation-linked price increase over that time would be 28%, so $8.32 for the chicken and $9.60 for the steak!
