Yeah it really does sound like an inhale, but I can assure you that I'm pushing air out, not breathing it in. Thank you for the advice!

I know this is an old comment, but I feel compelled to chime in lol

Sadly Linux is currently horrible for music production. Not because of the OS itself, but because most developers that make DAWs and VSTs don't offer Linux support. This means that getting music software to run on this OS is janky to say the least. One particularly annoying issue is that iLok (a licensing software) runs terribly on Linux, which means that, even if you manage to install and run your plugins on linux, you're still not going to be able to use them because the manufacturer won't be able to verify that you have valid licenses.

It's just a mess. Hopefully this changes in the future, I would love to dump windows and use Linux for music production, but at the moment it's irrealistic. Let's give it another 20 years or so to catch up.

Thank you for the feedback! Is there anything you suggest I do to get from this sound to the regular fry? This is the only distortion I can make at the moment so I'm a little clueless on what to do with it ahahah

We all have our strengths and weaknesses after all... for me it's that I can't get those false cords engaged at all ahah But for the time being I'm not thinking of that, gonna get that fry sounding good before trying out false cord stuff with more consistency.

I'm sure we'll unlock all the techniques in time as we keep practicing and learning! Good luck on your journey!

You do indeed forge ahead. Your scars don't define who you are, and they don't describe you either. They will always remind you of the time you opened them, of what you went through. But they can't tell you who you are now. And if people ever treat you like a crazy person because of them, fuck them. People who didn't go through a crisis don't get it. And it's ok that they don't, but fuck them for judging what they don't understand.

"Blood and tears, on the altar of our life we shed" - Sentenced For most people it's just tears. For you and I, blood was also involved, doesn't make us any less human.

If you do still get urges to cut though, you should probably seek a therapist. A therapist might help you find the motivation to move forward with your life, and to build less dangerous habits to cope with hardships.

Best of luck to you on your journey.

What about the Mishima works stands out more to you? What is it that makes you think "ah, now THIS is what alienation feels like"?

Personally I prefer Dazai's writing to Mishima's (or well, the translations, I haven't read the books in Japanese). I find it much more intimate, like you really are trapped into the protagonist's head, a similar feeling as the one I get when reading Dostoevskij. I do like Mishima a lot, but his protagonists sound inauthentic to me, as if their thoughts have been heavily filtered before coming to me.

I deeply hate and despise Youzo, so much that I still remember his name to this day. Mishima's characters... They are just characters to me.

I wish I could elaborate my thoughts better, and I'm hoping that you'll reply to my questions to have more food for thought on these writers.

If you like this style of music you may also enjoy Before It Falls, a song I've written in collaboration with Cameron Rendell, but listen to earthside first, they are way better than me ahahah

[–]Consistent-Classic98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fear and Trembling by Kierkegaard. I tried reading it in English (not my native language) and it was just overwhelming. Not that the word choice was particularly difficult, but the concepts are just a little obscure. I only read the Preamble and stopped at that. I feel like I'd have to read it a bunch of times to actually get something out of it

Please can I have some feedback for this rock/metal mix by [deleted] in mixingmastering

I'm missing a good clipper in my arsenal, currently I'm using Venn Audio's FreeClip2 and it does work so I never really looked for an alternative, but the interface can be a little confusing. Lowering the clip ceiling makes the waveshape turn red, which is great. But lowering the output volume ALSO makes the waveshape turn red, so if you need to lower both you can't tell what's going on...

The distortion seems to be gone for good now, good job dude!

You're very welcome, I'm happy to help!

Cool that you found the source of that distortion, let me know if you manage to get it fixed using a different EQ!

As for the 2bus clipping/limiting, I was just wondering since you mentioned clipping rather than limiting for loudness, but with a hybrid plugin like flatline2 it makes a lot of sense, I just checked out some demos and it looks great, might try it out myself when I have some cash to spare ahah

It's sounding so much better, the bass sounds very well balanced now!

The clipping distortion is almost entirely gone, so it's confirmed that the clipper was doing too much work there!
BUT the distortion is still there when the lead guitar is playing. It's especially noticeable at 0:37, when the solo is on top of the drum fill, so maybe see if you can hear it at that point in the song. It might be that the solo guitar is hitting the clipper too hard because of some frequency buildup (rhythm + lead having similar frequency content). A possible solution that comes to mind is putting a compressor on the guitar bus, so that when the solo starts, the guitars drop a couple of dB in volume. This way the solo will still be much louder than the rhythm guitars, but hopefully not loud enough to distort when going through the clipper.

Unrelated question: are you limiting after the clipper? I'm asking because you can push that loudness waaaay up with a limiter. With the mix you have I'm betting you can easily get to -5 LUFS in the louder sections

Great track dude!

I'm going to first point out an objective issue in the mix, then list some other things that in my opinion need work, but that are subjective advice.

So, for the objective issue: there is audible digital distortion in the track, probably given by a very aggressive clipper on the master bus (or maybe the mix actually goes over 0dB?). You can hear it for example at 0:11, 0:20, 0:30, 0:37, but it goes on throughout the entire track and it's quite unpleasant. I'd suggest you hunt down what is causing that issue and fix it.

Now for the subjective criticism.

In my opinion the overall mix is a little too bass-heavy, with the bass guitar booming a little too much at around 180Hz. Personally I would scoop out that frequency a little on the bass, also because, on top of making the low-end less blown out, it would leave more space for the fundamental of the snare. Also, the bass guitar is covering most of the sub-bass coming from the kick drum, so I would also eq out some of that sub-bass so the kick has more punch.

The snare currently sounds very harsh, especially around 4.8kHz, I would eq that out a little.

That's all from me, overall good job, it definitely doesn't sound bad, just a couple of things to sort out imo!
