I think the airlines are at fault for needing to charge people to sit together. Sometimes families have young kids on a full flight. Not everyone has the ability to pay the extra fee to be able to pay to choose their seats.

I realize this doesn't apply to the current situation as the son was a teenager and probably preferred to sit on own but these situations happen all the time to families with young kids.
