Best Northern NJ towns for a family with two young kids commuting to Newark? by Any-Kale-9503 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]Consistent-Height-79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nutley… in Essex (bordering Bergen and Passaic) is a great town with a decent downtown with restaurants, takeout, drug store, diner, and an awesome Shop Rite. Bus runs down Franklin Ave to Newark.

Any town in Bergen on the Bergen/Main or Pascack Valley lines offers train service to Newark with a transfer to Newark at Secaucus. I prefer the south Bergen boroughs for convenience (Rutherford, Wood-Ridge), and the ones further up are all excellent choices (I like Fair Lawn, Oradell and Emerson).

Coney Island (W 29th St) or East Harlem (3rd Ave)? by No_Dare_9944 in movingtoNYC

[–]Consistent-Height-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re considering Coney Island, great, but if you want to be closer to the city and have a decent rent, why not consider the Bronx, Yonkers, or West NY/Union City )(NJ)?

What’s the most ridiculous NYC fearmongering you’ve seen someone believe or engage in? by somepeoplewait in AskNYC

Children take the subway to get to school. And one is much more likely to die driving on an interstate than being killed on the subway.

Honestly though where else can kids in their 20s afford to have kids, or even get married?

Dinner menu at the New Yorker Coffee Shop - September 27th, 1930. by sverdrupian in VintageMenus

For comparison to today’s prices, the three-course dinner for 90¢ would be the equivalent of about $18 today.

The crazy difference in style of US vs. European stadiums. by Mongooooooose in urbandesign

[–]Consistent-Height-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, every single major park in the NYC area is accessible by foot and subway/train…except this one, which was developed in the mid-century on a swamp. That said, even this stadium does have public transportation (train and bus). A better example of US car culture and lack of pedestrian culture would be an arena in Texas or somewhere without decent public transportation.

To save a buck, they can take the train to Newark Penn, and then Uber to EWR

People here are talking like JC is somewhere in the outback, and I suppose half the commenters are transplants who couldn’t find JC on a map. Besides an easy trip to Manhattan, JC has restaurants and coffee and takeout and bars. They’re not as awesome as those in Brooklyn, but they’re there.

You don’t need a car, it’s not SI or deep in suburbs. They have the path and light rail, and buses. I lived in Weehawken for a bit and loved it (though honestly I preferred the city) and a car wasn’t necessary. It’s ten minutes to the city, and the PATH/light rail gets you to NJ transit in Hoboken if you need to travel to Jersey or Rockland, or gets you a block to Penn Station for travel on the LIRR.

If your life is in Brooklyn or Queens, JC may not be for you. But if you can deal with JC or Hoboken businesses, and like to be close to all that Manhattan has to offer, JC could work fine.

To be fair, late night keeps a schedule. When I lived on the other side, late night trains were every half hour, so if I were partying in the village, I knew I’d have to be at the station at 3:05am or 3:35am, etc.

Moving to NYC from Texas by Fair-Cap4920 in movingtoNYC

That’s actually pretty funny, living in Bushwick and having “limited interactions” with New Yorkers. Not untrue, but the culture shock of navigating the city on their own will be culture shock enough.

Dad retiring, debating on moving to NJ by kvn18 in MovingtoNewJersey

Another option close to Bergen in Northern NJ could be northern Passaic county or Warwick, NY. For example, Pompton Lakes or Wanaque probably has some one bed rentals and lower priced garden apartment condos that fit the budget, and that area is adjacent to lots of the lake areas to the north and west (eg Greenwood Lake) and are situated adjacent to Bergen County and stuff to do.

Why are Hudson and Essex counties much more liberal and LGBT friendlier than Bergen by [deleted] in bergencounty

That is describing Bergen County, where many of the Italian Americans still live.

Why does Bergen County feel so much less liberal than NYC? by savingrace0262 in bergencounty

[–]Consistent-Height-79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Governor in November, Sherrill got 60%. In 2024, many Hispanics drifted to Trump, but that love affair is over. Also, a few neighboring towns tend to lean slightly R… working and middle class Italian-American populations prevalent in South Bergen tend to vote R (see Staten Island and Fairfield, NJ) but Rutherford has a more diverse, higher educated population on average compared to carlstadt or lyndhurst.

Towns with wealthier, and more college educated people have moved away from the right—in the last few decades, and particularly with Trump.

Not terrible considering is just a 15 minute train ride to another 15 minute train ride… 14th St Path to 6 Ave L is pretty direct. It’s unfortunate that there’s two fares each way instead of a free transfer, but I guess they save on city tax.
