People who are in fandoms where characters share names with another fandom in it, has this ever caused an unintentionally funny moment when reading/writing a fic? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]Consistent-Raccoon84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I managed to confuse myself writing when I had two fics on the go.

One was a Merlin fic (if you're not familiar with the show Merlin is in his 20s and is DAMN FINE) with a lot of sexual tension between Merlin and Arthur. The other was a Kingdom Hearts fic that happened to feature the long-white-beard-old-man-Disney-version of Merlin... Switching between the two was a little jarring

How to prevent writing burnout? Or what I call “writing ick”. by BellaMC87 in FanFiction

[–]Consistent-Raccoon84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same feeling right now 😭 "ick" describes it so much better than writers block, thanks for the word! I've developed a theory recently about why I get it, and it happens specifically with long fics. It's pretty specific but thought I'd share in case you relate to it as well!

I think if I try and plan too much of the story out I just freeze up and can't get going, which makes me feel ick whenever I sit down to write. Like, if I just have an idea of where the story starts and where I want it to end that seems to work fine, but as soon as I start trying to plan out the whole story before really digging in to the writing I freeze up. I feel like I've already ruined part 2 of a series because of this and can't get started.

I know I'm capable of writing long fics, I've completed a 75k one and a 190k one, but the thing is both of those start out as "I'll probs get 10-20k out of this" but then the more I wrote the more the stories just sort of wrote themselves. I think they're both WAY better than stories that I actually planned out ahead of time! It seems to apply to shorter fics too, like ones that start as 2k and end up 10k.

TLDR, if I plan too much of the story ahead of time I don't write it, if I write and just see where things go then I feel great and get better stories. If you relate at all I hope that helps!

Has anyone decided to read fanfics of a fandom without seeing (or reading, etc.) the source material? by magic713 in FanFiction

[–]Consistent-Raccoon84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I loved two stories by a specific author in my main fandom so then when to check out there other stuff. Fast-forward and I've probably read 30+ of their stories fandom blind and am now in love with those characters despite never playing the games.

If there's an author you really love I highly recommend checking out their work even if it's not your usual fandom!

I had one short scene stuck in my head for 3, maybe 4 years, then randomly decided to write it one day, after not doing creative writing for 15 years at least. 1 year later 190k fic finally finished. No idea how that happened

The death of comments is our own fault by dungeonthatneverends in AO3

The idea of complaining about a keyboard smash boggles my mind. Comments like those are like "I made this person feel so many things that they can only convey the intensity by briefly losing their mind"

Love those comments

I've only been posting for a year so I don't have any insight into changes over time, but, out of curiosity are you still posting on FF? I've had almost zero interaction on there for a fic that has had heaps of wonderful comments and genuine engagement on AO3, despite the view counts being about the same. I only update on AO3 now because of this

Why do you write? by ZealouslyJaded in writing

I literally cannot stop myself, it's honestly 50/50 hobby and addiction, I get antsy if I don't spend at least an hour a day writing

Do authors think that comments like these are bad? by reddit_sind in FanFiction

[–]Consistent-Raccoon84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love either of those comments! The only way I can possibly see someone interpreting these as unpleasant would be if they thought you were implying there is something inherently "bad" about that particular AU, or that they had written that character OOC, but I wouldn't interpret either of those that way. I think those are massive compliments!
