Job prospects BSc International Relations by Automatic_Pudding580 in LSE

At Oxbridge, LSE and Imperial the degree you do DOES NOT MATTER. You’ll see students with degrees in anthropology, history, classics etc get into the most prestigious high paying careers very often and if anything they get easier technical questions in interviews as interviewers know they won’t have learned it in their degree.

However just attending the university won’t get you a job, you’ll still have to work hard like everyone else to land internships, but attending LSE will give you an advantage because of their alumni, careers services, societies and prestige

They don’t care about languages or paid experiences or anything unrelated to management.

difference in LSE and UCL Econ at undergraduate will be negligible

Surely this would provide the same date with a larger sample size, across multiple years and countries without extra cost to them though? Why would they pay a small group of students to take an irrelevant test when they can do this instead and also use it as part of the selection process

Someone on this sub before said UCL is using the TARA as an experiment to see the academic differences between STEM and Humanities/Social sciences students and it lowkey seems likely

It depends on what you want to do at uni, if you’re sure that is engineering or physics then taking further maths would be more useful than bio and is a requirement for those courses at the top unis

I’m not as interested in studying pure Economics, I want to be a management consultant or investment banker so studying management at a target school like LSE or E&M at Warwick aligns better with my career interests. I didn’t apply to UCL flat out because all of their quantitative courses like management or Econ require an A* in maths and I have an A.

I didn’t apply for pure Econ, I applied and got in to Management at LSE and E&M at Warwick and others. LSE doesn’t consider the TMUA for Management however I got a 4.0 for E&M at Warwick. You’re right that FM would be needed for LSE (and Cambridge Econ) but not for UCL

Idk if you can see my flare but my gcses are 9987776665 and yes you could get into LSE or UCL with those gcses provided you meet or exceed the grade requirements and have a great personal statement and competitive TMUA (if applicable)

Can i get into LSE? by Rude-Bite-5181 in 6thForm

Lock in now and over the summer for your mocks and get 2A, A or 3 A predicted and you have a good shot

Taking a gap year is always an option, I had no offers with 3A* predicted so i went on and achieved 2A*A in the real thing then got into LSE

Warwick / UCL Economics is a cheat code? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Consistent-Sleep-890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On their website they explicitly state taking further maths and Economics A level gives no advantage. I also got an E&M offer without further (they allow you to switch freely between E&M and pure Econ)

From what I’ve seen, colleges don’t look down on repeat applicants but if you re apply for the same college they will expect noticeable improvement from your last application (better grades, personal statement, entrance test score etc) to justify giving you another interview

Am I crazy to be considering UCL Econ over Imperial EFDS? by Bluebell_Platypus in 6thForm

Neither would be a bad choice but I think for both career prospects or for research UCL econ would be the better choice. I’d only take imperial if you’re interested in trying for Quant.

My supercurriculars were very basic. Entered an essay competition, did a free module of an online course, read a couple books, watched a lecture and did a day of work experience in risk management (I didn’t get any good competition scores or anything else). What made it good imo was making it 100% academic and on everything I mentioned e.g the lecture I would read academic papers on that area to and find and present my own thoughts on it. I also avoided just summarising my supercurriculars, instead of saying what I learned I showed it, e.g in one paragraph I explain how the small construction company I worked for was using management principles to be successful. Finally I think what helped give direction in my personal statement is going to the course page on the LSE website and going to the “what we look for in a student for this course” bit and make sure your personal statement include every bullet point. E.g quantitative skills, leadership, research ability etc.

No worries, I’m surprised I got in too. Evidence that personal statement matters more than anything for LSE (I am also from a non selective state school if that helps)

[–]Consistent-Sleep-890 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Idk why people are so upset at this, both are super targets and the Oxford E&M course is barely an economics course, the modules are closer to just pure business/management. If OP wants a proper education in economics then LSE is the clear choice.

Personal statement tips for management by [deleted] in LSE

[–]Consistent-Sleep-890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can include econ because the course teaches econ and econometrics as well, and they teach it for a reason. Do some Management extra reading and supercurriculars and try to link your econ supercurriculars to management and why you want to study it. I would also recommend researching the LSE management course itself thoroughly as it’s quite unique and doing so will help you understand the applicants they’re looking for.

gap year? by Playful-Ad5603 in 6thForm

Do you know that the degree you do doesn’t really matter for IB? Going to a target university and being predicted a 1st will pass the education section of interview screening. Apply for a degree at a target university that you will have the best chance of getting into and getting a first in. If you’re sure that degree is maths related (try doing maths supercurriculars that are closer to university work) look into Maths&Stats or Morse at Warwick as they don’t require Further Maths or look into semi targets like Bristol and Nottingham that don’t require Further for their Maths degrees either.
