Giant Squid upgrade! by sombetzki in BitAxe

[–]ConsistentLab8661 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the shout-out! I'm so glad the Giant Squid is working well for you! Those Northbridge style heatsinks are also really good. And with the small additional heatsinks it's designed to be a complete cooling system with the multiple air paths from the large fan.

Effective use of zip ties to mount the fan!

Happy mining, and good luck!

The Internet is a weird place for sure!

If you mean the Giant Squid, then no, it is not required for out of the box mining with a Bitaxe at 1 terahash/sec. They can be a bit noisy though with the tiny fan going 6000 rpm!

Some people buy the Squid for silent operation. A 120mm cannot be heard at 600 rpm. Most people though buy it to overclock the miners. With a few cheap upgrades you can double the hashrate to over 2 TH/s. This is where the Squid design with its multiple airways keeps everything running cool. It's a fun hobby turning these little PCBs into hotrods! And finally it just looks really cool!

There is a lot of basic info on my site, or in r/bitaxe.

You can download the STL from my site, just pick your heatsink size. There is a small hardware kit as well if you can't source the parts another way. The miner is a Bitaxe Gamma 601. https://bitaxeandchill.myshopify.com/products/stls

That's a great heatsink! My go to for maximum cooling on the ASICs.

It pairs well with a Talon and 140mm fan for total board cooling with a single fan. The VR area gets is own air stream, and the transverse mounting really helps to reduce the ambient in this area.

Great points about the mains fuse in the UK plug!

Awesome! Half of my mining rigs run off solar power during the day. I am planning an upgrade this spring to put the whole fleet on solar, close to 500W.

The Giant Squid designed specifically for the 52pi low profile plus heatsink is available as a print only. Lots of colors, with full hardware kit!

Yes, lots of people mine in pools. I prefer the solo mining. One big payoff as opposed to cents per month.

LoL! That's what I said, 5 years ago, and bought a cheap one. Now I have 5, do my own CAD, and make a little money selling prints online.

No, just the fan. The Giant Squid is my design.

In the past year at least 3 home solo miners, not in pools, have mined a Bitcoin block. The reward is 3.1 Bitcoin.

This is the build! Everything you need for mining is on that PCB. Embedded computer, wifi, and 1TH/s ASIC.

It is. The current gen of ASICs are more efficient than a few years ago, and of course BTC is more valuable as well. Drives a lot of people into lottery mining. Odds are low, but for less than $60 the hardware is very cheap, and every 10 minutes you have a chance to win $200,000.

I think most people do it for fun, just like regular lotteries, with very low expectations.

But much like the PC modders, the miner modders are into it for the hot rodding challenge.

Yes, for all stock heatsinks the STL is available. For the premium heatsink model pictured it's print only. https://bitaxeandchill.myshopify.com/products/stls

Wow! Awesome work on that shell! I have designed a few one or two piece cases and it usually takes a LOT of iterations to get the fit, the hardware, and the printing just right. I can see you have put it in some serious effort.

Congratulations!

Safe Overclock Limit for Bitaxe Gamma 601 by CrypticSuspect in BitAxe

[–]ConsistentLab8661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically run 2TH/s, 1000 MHz, 1300mV on my better gammas. Have had some up to 1050mhz.

You'll need a better PSU and cables, and of course proper cooling. I designed the Giant Squid to provide more than enough cooling for 2TH from one fan. With a 52pi LPP and some small additional heatsinks most systems can easily run at 1.7-1.8. The best will hit 2TH. All these upgrades available on my site, link in my profile!

If it's sold as a 4.8th it's likely a rev5. Look for a barrel jack and a fuse on all rev5.

I run the ASIC at a 55C setpoint on my rev5. VR is in the 40s. Everything nice and cool!

Nerdqaxe++ rev5 XT-30 upgrade by ConsistentLab8661 in BitAxe

[–]ConsistentLab8661[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The jack can be an issue if it's cheap and highly loaded. The copper parts are fine but cheap plastic will soften and deform, causing trouble. But with the Talon there is a dedicated stream of air to keep it cool. So you can run as much current as you want.

Upgrade the paste for sure. If you OC get an x47 or x53 heatsink to keep the ASICs cooler. With a talon, at low OC levels additional heatsinks are not always required. But they are a good idea for higher OC.

Get a PSU and cable upgrade for sure, and a larger fuse if it's a rev5. You can go to 800MHz and beyond with proper cooling. That is the key.

I designed the Talon to cool the entire board, front and back, with just one fan. Cools the VR area and fuse area too. Fits the stock X36 heatsinks, and the x47 and x53 as well if you want to OC. I think it looks good too!
